Do you own a Timeshare? Would you recommend purchasing one?   email this discussion to a friend?

My husband and I have been to many timeshare presentations and actually almost got talked into getting one a few times. We really liked Trendwest because of their vast variety of different rentals all over the place! The only downside, with a family of five we would have to buy a pretty large vacation package of units! But every year we remember all those presentations and think "wow, it would be great to be on vacation right now!" Especially since whenever we stay in a hotel we have to pay almost $200 per night anyway! Seems well worth it to me. Please give your insight - do you own one? Do you like it? Is it worth it? Recommendations?

I dont own one nor would I recommend purchasing one because they are hard to get rid of if you decide to sell. Some people do like them though. My aunt and uncle have one they like and use alot and so do some friends of ours. Bear in mind though it's an expense that never really goes away.

True - I guess what I like about that though is that you can hand it down to your children. I believe it would only work best for those who really love to travel and would spend a good amount of time doing that every year. I also like that units rollover to the following year if you don't get a chance to use them that year. I know when we went to the presentation about four years back, we could have purchased one then for around $15,000. Now that seems like a lot - but the choices of places to stay and all that were great! So many times we've traveled somewhere that claimed they were 3 1/2 stars or something and turned out to be a dump! To know that we would have a clean, nice spacious condo to stay in with a kitchen and all that every time we traveled would be great! Thanks for your input!

Hi jashley1,
Yes, I do have a timeshare in Aruba. We bought it with my husbend about 12 years ago.
Besides being able to use our unit in Aruba,we became members of Interval. So we could trade our week. That way we went to many places around the world.
After my husband died, my money "shrinked" if you know what I mean. But I still had the timeshare. So I use it to go with my kids and grankids and they pay part of the maintainance fees.
I pay about $550 for a very nice apartment. That´s what costed me one in Orlando with 3 bedrooms and a wonderful kitchen.
When we go with friends we split expenses. Imagine $250 a week for a 5 star resort!
I hope this helps

Thank you for your response! That is what I'm talking about! Only $250 a week for a 5 star resort! I mean, we're not all persnipity or anything, but we refuse to stay in a really low class motel just because we don't truly feel comfortable at those types of places, not to mention completely safe. When we're on vacation we want to feel that way and for a week it would be well over $1000 anyway! That sounds great! I'm glad you still are able to enjoy it with your family!

Hi again,
The $250 a week (around) is only if you split with someone. Actually, the maintenance fee per week at my resort in Aruba is a little above $550. I can have 4 adults in my unit. 2 with a private room and 2 at a very good sofabed in the living room.
But I traded that at Interval for other places. If you trade, you have to pay some more for the exchange. At Orlando, as I told you, we traded my unit for a place where 8 people could stay with all the commodities. In Spain, the exchange was for a smaller place than the one we had. At Buenos Aires we got a rather run down apartment ( not terrible though) but at walking distance of "everywhere". The last time I exchanged was for an apartment in Sta Catarina, Brasil. Wonderful!
At this time of my life I need a good bed, a very good bathroom and help from the hotel personel if needed. I have it. LOL I don´t like rooms with odours of stale smoke, even when I smoked.
Besides I can put together 2 weeks so the air fare is worth it.
