Those Energy Drinks May Be Harmful

I heard this story last night on the news that those popular energy drinks like Red Bull, may be harmful, especially to children and teenagers and can cause a lot of not only behavioral problems but even health problems. All these energy drinks have a ton of caffeine in them...more than the average cup of coffee or soft drinks. Some of the behavioral problems listed are anxiety and irritability, the health problems involved are abnormal heart rhythms and can impair brain development in younger children. Here's an article I found about this: (Quote) Energy drinks In recent years, an increase in consumption of energy drinks containing caffeine has led to concern by teachers and parents of the possible effects of caffeine on children. They are afraid that caffeine will make their children behave in ways that are unusual or harmful for them. What are energy drinks? Energy drinks are drinks designed to increase stamina and improve physical performance. Some energy drinks are designed especially for elite athletes, but most are produced and marketed for the general community. What are their main ingredients? The main ingredients in energy drinks are caffeine, taurine and glucuronolactone. Some new drinks on the market also contain opium poppy seed extract or ephedrine. * Taurine Taurine is an amino acid that occurs naturally in the body. Amino acids help to build protein. They are also believed to detoxify and cleanse the body of harmful substances. In times of stress and high physical activity, the body can lose small amounts of taurine. Some people use energy drinks to try to replace or build up their body's level of taurine. * Glucuronolactone Glucuronolactone also occurs naturally in the body. It is a natural metabolite and carbohydrate formed when glucose breaks down, and is believed to be helpful in ridding the body of harmful substances and providing an instant energy boost. * Caffeine Caffeine is a stimulant which acts on the central nervous system to speed up the messages to and from the brain so that the person feels more aware and active. Here is the caffeine content of some popular energy drinks and soft drinks (per 250 mL). * Impulse - 88mg * Red Bull - 80mg * Naughty Boy - 80mg * "V" - 78 mg * Coca-Cola - 48.75 mg * Diet Coke - 48 mg * Diet Coke Caffeine-Free - 2 mg * Pepsi - 40 mg * Diet Pepsi - 44 mg * Pepsi Max - 44 mg You can see the whole article here which is a lot longer: http://health.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=21178 I've personally never tried any of these energy drinks myself, since to be quite frank a lot of them are just plain expensive, but I've always been conscientious of my caffeine intake to begin with. But I can see how potentially harmful such caffeine loaded drinks could be for young children or teenagers who might equivalent them with something like sodas and drink a lot. If you have children, do you allow them to drink any of these "energy" drinks? Do you drink them yourself?

I'm a college student and I've seen what those things can do. I've seen college students twitch worse than squirrels. Funny beyond all belief but scary too. I sit there ant watch them wondering how many cans of energy drinks they've had because I really dont' want to have to start their hearts because they've stopped. I'd refuse to let my children drink those drinks. I don't want something to happen to them if they drink it. And I refuse to drink them myself because I've seen what it does to people.

I was also told they have a lot of sugar in those drinks too, so between all that sugar and all that caffeine no wonder people might be a bunch of fidgets---I don't think people realize the true effects those drinks have

I've never felt the need to drink those things. Many of them are cola flavored and I can't drink colas (allergy.) I get all the caffeine I want in my Diet Dr Pepper. I do sometimes drink coffee. I figure that what's the point of drinking coffee if I don't get the caffeine. I do feel that children/teens should not drink the drinks. And so many kids in high school do it.

I didn't realize those drinks were cola flavored...I'm not a big fan of sodas anyway and have had to cut down on my caffeine intake as it does cause me more anxiety problems

Not all of them, but when the roomie's nephew was living with us I was able to ask him what they tasted like. Some of them are also loaded with sugar.

I've never even heard of some of those energy drinks. I don't drink them, I only drink regular soda and seem to be pretty immune to soda amounts of caffeine. I've dealt with so many antsy college students that drink those things to stay up late and complete projects, I have no desire to drink any myself because I don't think I could deal with being antsy and reay to go all the time myself.

Hi pyewacket! I have heard about that too and I was informed by this by a fellow mylotter here but not the way you have just explained it in details. Since then, I never took another energy drink in my life again. I don't have any kids but I don''t allow my nieces and nephews drink any energy drinks nor I allow them to drink sodas too. Whenever, they are here with me, I usually prepare something cool to drink like the juices I made from fruits or will just have them drink milk or water. And definitely no coffee for them. Thanks fro sharing this detailed information my friend. Take Care and God Bless! Celebrate Life!

I'm glad to hear that you give your nieces and nephews healthy drinks like juices....to be honest that's all I drink myself, save for my morning coffee...but that one coffee is all I have. I guess a lot of people just don't realize how harmful those energy drinks can be.

I don't drink them. I have a pretty unpleasant reaction to caffeine so I have to keep it down to a minimum. My son was drinking 'Surge' for awhile, which is a soft drink LOADED with caffeine. It was hilarious to watch him buzz around the house with a rag in his back pocket, picking up glasses off tables and poof! wiping up the condensation ring before you even had a chance to say "Hey, I wasn't finished with that!" Whipping out the couch with one hand and vacuuming up the dust bunnies with the other. Hehehe. It didn't take him too long to realize that 'Surge' was turning him into lean mean cleaning machine. Hehehe, he's a Virgo.

I can't tolerate much caffeine myself...hehe...one of the effects is that it makes me pee a whole hell of a lot more...LOL..well, at least your son was getting a lot of cleaning done in Guinness record time. Kind of reminds me years and years ago with my mother..she went to a diet doctor and he gave her glorified amphetamines --yikes talk about bouncing off the walls, being "busy" all the time and would talk REAL fast

Yeah, well I did a lot of speed when I was living in San Francisco, and caffeine has almost the same effect on me - the jittery nerves, pounding heart, mood swings, and babbling without hardly even taking a breath in between sentences. My brother had come all the way up here on a one day on a 'turn-around' trip to exchange the car he was driving with another one of his vehicles he keeps parked up here. It's a 7 hour round-trip, and he had had little sleep because of a hectic work schedule, and I had been up all night myself, so when he got here I had a pot of coffee brewing which we both consumed, and we had both already been consuming coffee prior to that. At one point we were standing in my sewing room babbling up a storm with my 'Temple Music' playing in the background. I repeatedly noticed a feeling of 'groundedness' move through me which I realized was the effect of the music, and then my brother started looking real distracted until suddenly he stopped talking mid-sentence (my brother never stops talking mid-sentence) and took a deep breath and said 'Man, what peaceful music!" It was a piece by Michael Perricone called 'Dawn'.

Hehehe, and once, when I was living in San Francisco, somebody had given me some 'Black Beauties', which are some of those 'diet pills' you were talking about. Somewhere around 2AM I decided to paint the area around my sink. I had the paint, but the only paintbrush I had was a small artists paintbrush. You know, the kind you paint little details with on a painting. I painted the three walls around my sink area with that brush, which I finally finished by about 8 or 9 o'clock in the morning.

There is a healthy energy drink - XS Energy Drink distributed by Quixtar. It comes in lots of different flavors and has no more caffeine than a cup of coffee. There is even one, at least, that has NO Caffeine. The energy comes primarily from B vitamins from natural sources. I love it. You can find it on my website. Send me a PM if you want the web address.

I wouldn't recommend them to kids and teenagers. I've even seen cases of teens dying from it (combined with extended rigorous activity most times). However, I don't think Energy Drinks are bad. Yes they can bite the wallet a bit, but I order a couple in bulk. The expense is lower when higher quanities are purchased (though that 20 oz Red Bull didn't add up) Other individual energy drinks cost about as much as say a 20 oz coke or a little over that. Effect wise, they do bring up energy, and on occasions it can increase serotonin levels (simple language: "that feels good..." ^-^). Many of these drinks have daily requirement levels of vitamins B6 and B12 (others have B1, B2, B3, B5, and C). There is at least one (now defunct) energy drink that had heavy amounts of potassium in it. Taste wise, it varies. Might even be an acquired taste, but to me, so was coffee (I'm not a real fan of that, but I drink that on rare occasion). Red Bull and NOS have more "tang" to them, Monster has much more sweetness to it. Amp tastes similar to Mountain Dew (obviously...). Full Throttle has serious tang and very bad heartburn. YJ Stinger has flavours but they seem muted.

Today I was kind of in shock...I was coming home and this kid that looked no more than thirteen came out of a deli type store clutching one of those energy drinks...don't parents realize what a keg of dynamite these drinks are especially for such young kids???

My eldest drinks them, but he is 16 so he can please himself what he wants to drink. I do not let my younger ones have them, good grief I would never get any peace if they had that to drink! I very rarely let them have fizzy pop, they always have juice. The only time I ever drink the energy drinks is when I go out and I have double vodka and red bull, and boy does it do the trick!

I never had those drinks...can't take in too much caffeine anyway. Just today though I saw this kid and he couldn't have been more than thirteen ....think that's a bit young don't you? Then if kids are hyper their parents wonder why with all that caffeine in them
@gemini_rose (16264)

Yes I agree thirteen is way too young, at that age they should not need them they should have tons of natural energy. I always did.

We don't give those drinks to our children. I mean, lets face it, the one things most of the kids I have seen don't need more of is energy. I did try a couple of those energy drinks when they first came out, but I didn't like the taste of any of them. I think that I will just stick with my coffee.

You're so right...most kids are hyperactive enough as it is naturally without them drinking an energy drink. From reading a lot of the responses here it seems others who have tried those drinks thought they tasted horrible too...glad I never wasted my money on them

Gatorade isn't bad for you. It replaces the electrolytes your body loses while sweating or heavy exercise. The basic flavors are crappy but the new ones they came out with taste pretty good. My daughter loves it and I make sure she has a huge supply during softball season.

My very fit teenage son, age 16, all of a sudden started getting high blood pressure. We realized it was triggered by his drinking "energy drinks" and I quickly put an end to it. Unfortunately my oldest daughter, 19, doesn't want to listen and not only does she drink them but she drinks them and is already prone to issues like high BP as it runs in the family, plus she is heavier. Add to that her smoking and she's just begging for an issue!!!! UGH! Kids!

I know all about those dangerous energy drinks and avoid them like the plague. I also lecture kids on the dangers of those drinks whenever I see one with an energy drink. My daughter knows not to touch them as well. Jezzzzzzzz...if I drank one of those, I would have to sit on the throne all day with a few good books.

I've tried a few of these drinks and actually I didn't like the taste. Probably a good thing since I don't have the Starbucks habit and wouldn't need another expensive drink to keep me awake or up-an-at-em in the morning. I drink a nice cup of coffee in the morning and call it quits. I don't buy these even for a treat for my teenager, so he doesn't know what he's missing! He gets Gatorade for game days and I get that on sale. Even that adds up when in basketball season. I'm sure it has some benefit, or I hope so anyway. I think the kids nowadays have so many additives in their food as it is. MSG, high fructose corn syryp, sodium, preservatives, hormones....

Yes there are so many additives to so many foods...MSG is one of the worst too..no wonder so many people develop health problems in later years due to such additives, so kids definitely don't need them in their foods. You're like me...I only have one cup of coffee in the morning and that's it

I have heard that before and I don't like them. But then, I need to stay away from caffeine. My kids wanted them and I wouldn't let them get them. My daughter says the kids at school drink them so they can stay awake later studying. I think they need to manage time better and leave those high powered drinks along.
