I thought our economy was horrible |
|
The Democrats running for the Presidency have all lamented about the economy. Well it most not be that bad if we can afford their campaigns. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have spent $121 million combined vying for the Democratic presidential nomination. All in all the Democrats spent in advertising, $135 million. The Republican only used $57 million, with John McCain using $11 million. Obama spent a grand total of $75 million, while Clinton spent $46 million. So if the economy was so horrible then why, and how did them two spend so much money? The money came from somewhere.

When you have a process where hundreds of millions of dollars are raised, then the odds are extremely good that corruption will follow (The Bush administration is a perfect example of this). I wish that someone who thinks that donating large sums of money to a person to win an election and do what you want them to do for you, is a constitutional right. However, the last time I check it was illegal to bribe an elected offical, and this sure sounds like bribery. But, what do I know?

2. toledomark1975 (329) | 6 months ago | The money the democrats are raising is coming from corporate American (which is really pissing republicans off, because these people usually give money to republicans), and we all know that they have alot of money to give. I was listeing to one of talk shows today, and they say that Obama, and Clinton have already received around $200 million, and the majority of them have not reached their max contribution amount. Thus, they figure that they could raise another $150 million from these people alone. By contrast McCain has struggled to raise the $100 million he has now, and the majority of them have maxed out what they can give to him. Thus, putting him in a very bad situation, he will have to rely on Bush to get money, but that could alienate some of the voters.

To be able to gain more power over the ordinary citizen is worth any amount to these people because the lust for power is their primary driving force.

4. oneandonemakesix (24153) | 6 months ago | hey gew, Hillary went millions into debt running her campaign, and is now negotiating with Obama to help pay for those debts, to include the loan of 11 million to her own campaign.....after PA primaries and the reports that hse had brought in 10 million dollars on the net that she was 20 million in debt with only 10 in the bank. Obama has outraised her 3 to 1 at least....and part of it is he has done the bulk of his fundraising from the internet, and lovely thing called PayPal, and you know the thing is if a bunch of people give 5 or 10 dollars think how that is going to add up if 1 million people donate just 5.00 Obama has a HUGE following, and there was no cap on internet giving, the fundraisers that Bill and Hillary were so well known for that once the check was written the well dried up, it wasn't until late in the campaign around the time of PA primaries that Hillary really started tapping into online payments.....where people could donate more than once, or donate as much as they wanted. That's how they got so much money, people felt better about giving the money because they could do so in small amounts as they could afford. Mooch

anniepa (6316) | 6 months ago | There's a cap on any donation whether it's online or not, nobody can give more than (I think) $2300. What has helped Obama so much is that, as you said, he got a lot of small donations from a larger number of donors while Hillary got more large donations from fewer donors. Hillary's donors maxed out early while Obama could keep going back to the same people and ask for another 5 or 10 bucks. Annie

5. Yestheypayme2dothis (2456) | 6 months ago | I agree. I hear that Obama puts his people in Motel 6 type places and Hillary puts hers in decent hotels. That is a lot of money. The way people are complaining that they have no money today, those figures make the think about what our country could do with it. It is wasted on ads, etc.

6. anniepa (6316) | 6 months ago | That must mean McCain used $11 in one month! The economy is horrible, actually it's a bit beyond horrible, but apparently there are enough not so wealthy people who could afford to give Obama and Clinton a few bucks here and there and a smaller number of rich fat-cats who have funded McCain's campaign. No matter what, we definitely need campaign finance because political campaigns shouldn't be about who can raise the most money from any source. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24238167/ "In March, his (McCain's) operating expenses were $5 million, his smallest monthly expense so far this year. McCain's expenses ranged from $758,000 for air charters to $151.55 to a Los Angeles florist. The campaign reported a debt of $707,000, much of it outstanding American Express billings. McCain had his most fundraising success in California and Florida, each of which yielded more than $1 million." Annie

7. jer31558 (2270) | 6 months ago | Well there are several places that the money could come from. When you file taxes, you have the option of donating a dollar for the presidential campaign fund and I am sure that many do. There are also donation from individuals and corporations but I think that there is some limit to how much.

8. Yestheypayme2dothis (2456) | 6 months ago | I agree! I have been thinking about this a lot lately. People complain about the economy, but they never think about all the money spent on these campaigns. Imagine what we could do with that money. They should have to answer for that. Americans who give to political must be doing good. No mor complaining about the economy. We have money. It is just misplaced as usual.
