| | Oh yes I can understand why you are so angry. I love trees and the reason why Avenue were named avenues where because they were lined with beautiful trees but these days its concrete everywhere. I am lucky in that I live in a rural area where we still have plenty of beautiful tress but it is so very very sad to hear of this needless destruction. Ellie :D | | | | | | |

| | We live in concrete city, no grass, a few trees that like you said look sick and partial now, I don't understand why they do this. I guess the team that went over to your block is the same team that is here now because they are doing the same thing over here. As a matter of fact I can hear the saws right now so I guess they are working on destroying any beauty we deserve to see and enjoy. | | | | | | |

| | Well how do your trees look now? Did they do a hatchet job on your block of trees? Some folks think that pruning the trees pave way for more growth...uh, nope...they did a pruning job of the trees some six years ago, and no new offshoots came as a result | | | |

| | This was no pruning, they chopped and it looks like stumps to me. Gee I wonder if they chopped outside of mayor Doomberg's house. | | | |

| | You should only know all the emails I've been writing..and snail mail letters..I made a complaint to DEP, Congressman Crowley's office, Helen Sears, SaveATree, and about five other environmental organizations about this and even wrote to the "tree expert" company themselves...the name was ASPLUNDH and you can find their website...I pointed out that they did EVERYTHING wrong about this "pruning" which isn't supposed to be done this time of year as the trees can go into "shock" -they also didn't use any sealant so now the trees can be exposed to airborne tree diseases, so they might all die off anyway. If I thought it do any good I would write to Doomberg himself but that yutz won't do anything You wouldn't by any chance want to get in the action of a writing campaign...would you about this? Okay the damage is done already...but still can voice our protests about this--when I was walking home today, I looked down 82nd street (between 45th and broadway)--the trees have signs up...so that block is going to be zapped next. | | | |

| | PS--wonder if this hatchet job is a NYC thing..I mean is this happening all over NYC or are we in Queens the only "lucky" ones? | | | |

| | You know I feel the EXACT same way! Why on earth did they cut them so much for?! What possible reason does it need it? I'm angry right along with you! That drives me crazy when they cut down trees for no reason or butcher them as well. Yes I understand that there are power lines and such in neighborhoods and yes trees around it should be trimmed every so often but I don't think that's the case you described. | | | | | | |

| | Where I live at the neighbors have a big beautiful tree that is so full of birds, they are so noisy! I hate when the hatchet at the trees, but from what i understand they cut them back each year so they will have new growth. But I agree with you, don't they take into consideration the bird's home's? Probably not. & right now it's spring so there are lots of babie's....Lori | | | | | | |

| | I don't think any new growth will result with this...they pruned the trees some six years ago, and the trees are still barren of any growth where they cut branches and limbs off then--I feel sorry for the birds...know it sounds stupid but I do | | | |

| | Pyewacket, I would feel exactly the same way about it as you do. I love trees, they are so beautiful each tree telling a different story of the things it has seen. Each tree a silent witness to scenes that may have happened within its distance. They do cut them back too much, they have no idea of how to trim a tree. I have some beautiful trees in my garden. Recently a storm uprooted one half of one of my trees, this tree could have been replanted but no one wanted to do it. The neighbours were happy because it gave them more light in their conservatory and my hubby did not want to replant it and so it was just cut up without any thought and put to the rubbish. To say I was upset was an understatement. | | | | | | |

| | Sounds like you're a fellow tree lover as well. Yes each tree has a "history" and has witnessed the passage of time. Some fifteen years ago, they cut down all the trees on this one avenue near me..they too were very old trees...they did replant new trees, but guess what? None survived and died off within six months...brilliant, huh? | | | |

| | Yes I do love trees. It is OK for people to say that everytime a tree is cut down a new one will be replanted, but when the tree they cut down is years or hundreds of years old it is not good enough. Plus a new tree also takes a lot of years to reach adulthood (as a tree) it is not the same at all. | | | |

| | I don't understand the need for it either. If these towns and cities are so concerned about large trees...whatever the reasons are....maybe they should plant smaller varieties in their place rather than butchering the large trees. Or if trees in general are the problem, maybe they could at least give you some other landscaping to look at. I think my parents have finally run out of trees big enough for the electic company to butcher. First it was just the big pine in front, it was sickly looking anyway so no big deal. Then the second pine had to go...eh, it was right at the end of the driveway and people kept backing into it anyway. But over the next few years the electric company became more sinister...first they butchered a healthy cherry tree, then a weeping willow, both looked sad and ugly until they were finally brought down entirely. The willow provided some protection for the little apple tree so once the willow was gone the apple tree succumbed to a wind storm. Then there was the big maple...it needed "trimming". They lopped off a full third of it, all on one side. Lopsided trees don't fair well when the wind picks up, another third eventually crashed down on their garage and my newly purchased used little camper. The rest was brought down last week since it was was looking a little scary whenever the wind blew. | | | | | | |

| | Yes these "geniuses" might not take that into consideration in how they cut the limbs/branches down...you make a good point since the trees, particularly the one right in front of my building is now lopsided..so as you say, one good storm could actually bring the tree down since it's no longer "balanced" Looking out now, there's no nice shade...and wonderful, today we're experiencing our first heat wave with the temperature being 94 degrees..lovely..NOT | | | |

| | Trees help provide shade to houses along the street and help in lowering an electric bill. I do not get why healthy trees should be cut. Dead limbs I can understand, but healthy ones do not make sense. I would rather have the shade than have them cut. | | | | | | |

| | I never read that poem...think I'll have too now...No, you're right though, no one, or at least not too many people seem to appreciate the beauty of trees, their shade and giving us even a sense of privacy, especially when you live on a block, where across the street is another large apartment..so gee, now people can look into our apartments more.. | | | |

| | The only time they touch the trees in out neighbor hood is if they hang to far in to the street or in the way of power lines now I understand them cutting these branches away wouldnt want the to catch on fire at any time and I dont have to pay for it but to take and cut them so they do no good and look horrible thats just not right and at this time of year they have probably killed most of them so they wont grow again | | | | | | |

| | Yes I could understand cutting limbs/branches of trees that might be touching power lines, but most of them weren't, so you try and figure that logic out | | | |

| | I love trees, so I understand why you are upset by this. But I can't understand why did they have to cut healthy branches, is it blocking the view from the apartments or what? Even so, that's not an excuse for cutting beautiful trees. I knew some branches have to be cut because healthy ones need to grow, but as far as I know this is supposed to be done in the autumn, not in the spring. And not big branches, just the little ones. | | | | | | |

| | That's what I can't understand--one of the great things about those branches, besides giving shade here, it DID block apartment views, but it gave us all a sense of privacy, now people can look into each other apartments. I just been reading up on that too about trees, that any kind of pruning is supposed to be done in the dormant period, like the late fall or winter months, not late spring or summer | | | |
