A dog protects his family and friends.

Maxxx the Wonder Dog - Here is Maxxx, the fierce and aggressive watch dog of our neighborhood. He is mixed Golden Retriever and something we have not fully identified. Sometimes we joke that he is stupid because he is not always so bright in his behavior as we think he should be. However, when it comes to loyalties, this dog knows who loves him and feed him, and he is quick to protect us from people who don't belong around here.

We live in a pretty quiet part of town. Several people, including me, have dogs. Once in a while you hear the dogs conversing with each other at night by what I call "dog telegraph" (borrowed from Disney's 101 Dalmations). This morning around 4 am, the dog telegraph started up just down the road from us and before long my dog was carrying on like crazy. I could tell by his bark that something different was going on as it wasn't his normal newscasting or neighborhood watch bark. His bark got really fast and high pitched like a mix between a howl and yapping. I got up to see what was going on. My dog was over by our property line fence and there was a drunk guy stumbling around in the neighbors back yard. Of course the more that he yelled and cursed at the dog the more it barked. The fence is only a mesh wire fence so the guy stumbles up to the fence and although it was dark I could tell he was attempting to relieve himself on my dog. I am not a guy but I know I wouldn't want my personal area that close to a growling dog's mouth. By this time the neighbor was at the kitchen window watching the guy and letting him know they were aware of his presence. He was looking over their flowers and veges and lawn furniture and garden tools, and I wouldn't have put it past him to steal something. I shouted to the guy that I would call the police if he didn't leave, but he was too drunk to reason. He told me he thought someone should call the police on my dog. He attempted more than once to relieve himself... you would have thought even a drunk man would know better than to expose himself to a angry dog. HAHA. Anyway, eventually one of my neighbors went out and got in his pickup truck and drove around to pick up the drunk and get him out of the neighborhood. I think that neighbor knew him, but in any case, I was grateful when the guy was gone. Someone in my neighborhood, no one knows just who, has a habit of calling police when dogs make too much noise. I called my neighbor this morning to ask her to back me up that the dog was only protecting us, and she knew the dog had saved her property from this guy, too, so she agreed readily that if anything happens she will witness for me that we were being harassed by this drunk. My dog is normally really friendly and loveable, but he sure showed his protective side last night. He was so riled by the time the guy left that when I brought him in the house, he laid down. When I tried to comfort him by stroking his head and back, he snarled at me so I backed off. He also snarled at our cats, which he doesn't normally do, and he even snarled at my stepson who can usually control the dog no matter what. This morning, after we all went back to sleep for a couple hours, he is acting more like himself, but he is really temperamental about people walking down the street this morning. Check out his picture here, you will see what a lovely dog he really is. But I am glad to know he is protective of us and the neighbors when necessary. He barks at almost everyone who comes near or in our yard but he seems to know deep down who is there on a friendly or business visit, as opposed to those who intend harm.

Oh is that what they call it dog telegraph. We have dogs around our neighborhood that do that with each other at night. If 1 barks all the others start barking.

That's what I call it, and that's what they called it in the Disney dalmation cartoon (or something like that). There is definitely some truth to it because they are communicating something to each other.
