Would You Be Offended if a Friend Suggested Job Corps? email this discussion to a friend?

One of my friends called me today with a ton of excitement in her voice. She screamed at me, "Write down this phone number!" After I pretended to do so (figuring I could just ask her again if it was something cool), she tells me... "There was this add on TV, where they pay for your room and board and you get to learn a job skill! You could get a job!"

This friend doesn't have a job. She is in college, but has been in college as long as I have and she is no where near graduation. I have a job and have had jobs for years. I am nearly ready to graduate (hopefully!).

So I ask her, "Do you mean, Job Corps?" She says, "Yes, that is it!" I was so mad. That place helps you learn basic skills to do some type of entry level position and is mostly for people who are dirt poor and did not even graduate high school.

When I told her what it was, I guess she honestly didn't realize it. She thought you could become a nurse there from watching the commercial, so she concluded I also did not need to go to vet school after college because I could just become a vet there, in a few weeks! HA! If only it were so easy.

I did kind of have to laugh at the end. But if you had received this call, would you be offended too that someone suggested you should join Job Corps?

Pigglies, I must say that I am saddened by your offense. Job Corps is not what you describe; it is hope for the hopeless and offers help to all who earnestly seek it within the organizational guidelines of the Corps. They help the poor, middle class, and the rich; it doesn't matter how much money you have or what the color of your skin is. And, yes, they do help you move on to college if that is your desire.

A lot of Blue and Gray collar jobs pay outstanding wages. Job Corps does and outstanding job in producing some of america's finest workers. They are taught basic skills and have opportunities to go on to learn advance skills. There are lots of options available in Job Corps while enrolled and after completion, it is too bad that more is not commonly known about the true status of the Corps.

I speak from experience; my sister graduated from Job Corps and she died a pillar of her community and a well-off self-employed business owner. My daughter also graduated from Job Corps and got her present job with Gibson Guitar as a direct result of her studies in the Corps. She just turned 26 years-old last month and lives in Nashville. She has an apartment, a car, a very big dog she rescued, and is due to graduate from college next summer. Yes, she is highly paid and, without a doubt, one of the best employees Gibson has ever had; and they reward her often for her abilities which she gained at Job Corps.

Like any place, Job Corps is what you make it; sounds like your friend would do well to check it out more fully. Ah, yes, Job Corps, a government program of the people, by the people and for the people--college is not for everyone nor is obtainable by everyone; thank goodness there are programs still available like Job Corps to help those who want to help themselves to become successful in their own right.

Interesting, I was just wondering. What do you have to give them for all these things?

myLot reputation of 84/100. Iconoclast1 (159)  5 months ago

Also, what are the qualification criteria?

It is for some people obviously, and can be a good thing. But I meant that I was offended because I am already almost ready to graduate from college and because Job Corps has nothing to offer for me.

If I wanted a job like that, it sounds like it wouldn't be too bad. But even then, I know of a lot of technical schools I probably would have tried first.

Iconoclast1, Job Corps is different from college in that you get paid a very small allowance to attend rather than you paying the Corps. It is a free government program. You can google Job Corps or visit: http://jobcorps.dol.gov/

I is a government facility and has rules that must be obeyed to attemd in good standing. You have chores but there are lots of rewards and free perks too like team sports, special group trips to movies, amusement parks, etc. My best advice to someone who wants to attend is to get a good counselor who can help guide you toward your personal goal.

Check out the site for yourself, call or visit a center to see if this is something you'd like to do.
I can only tell you that it is very rewarding if you use what is available to you. I wish more kids and young adults would take advantage of this program, it is a great training program for employment and life.

Pigglies, I am glad you realized this program is not for you, you may have unselfishly made room for someone else who really wanted to attend and found the program a perfect match for their career goals. You are an honorable person who has achieved much in your own right. Please do not judge you friend too harsely, I am sure only good intentions where behind the suggestion. If your friend is under 24 years-old and has just started their college career, Job Corps may be for them. The Corps will assist in attending college even on to graduate studies and sometimes beyond. Who knows, maybe Job Corps is for someone like your friend. Congrats and best of luck in your chosen field of study.

My friend is almost 24, but she has been going to college for the last 5 years. I've been going for the last 6 years. She is definitely not as close to graduation. But probably too close to consider changing her plans now. She keeps changing her major, but she probably can't do anything hands on. She is currently an English major.

By the way, just so you don't think I'm an academic snob or something, I have worked in machine shops to try to earn extra money. A lot of those blue collar jobs are hard work. That's how my dad has worked his whole life and it is definitely not something for me, but not so much for the hands on part. Being a veterinarian (if I ever get there), will be hard work and hands on too. And if I could go to Job Corps for it instead of paying $40,000 a year in tuition and going further and further into debt, I definitely would.

I know that she felt a little funny when you told her what job corp was and I know that she said OH!!. I hope you didn't make her feel bad; to her it was a good way of getting a job and learning at the same time. So you can't knock her for trying something different.

myLot reputation of 95/100. Pigglies (3463)   ranked 5 out of 4,055 in student  5 months ago

Oh, I don't think she is going to do it. She wasn't intending it for herself, she meant that I should go to Job Corps.

She probably could benefit from it. But then again, maybe not. Those jobs are more hands on and she is good at things like reading, writing, etc. She is an English major.

But I didn't make her feel too bad about it, by the end of the phone call I just laughed it off.

I wouldn't be offended, your friend didn't know what it was. She was only trying to help.
