When Your Power Goes Down, What Do You Have As Backup?  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 98/100. Darkwing (7548)   ranked 13 out of 32,944 in life 4 years ago

As some of you will know, there have been workmen upgrading the sewer systems and the storm drains in our street. Work has stopped for a while during the summer but they will be back soon, and then, I guess, we'll be back to all the power cuts, as before.

What do you have for backup if your power goes down? There is no gas supplied to the village, so when it happens, we can't cook, unless we have Calor Gas, in cylinders. I have a paraffin lamp, a torch and oodles of candle sconces and candle stands, plus a good supply of church and pillar candles for emergencies. There is a candle sconce each side of my chimney breast in the living room and on one dining room wall. Beside the hearth, on either side, there's a candle stand. There's a wrought iron candle stand in my dining room and lots of candle sticks and glass containers with candles in, and one paraffin lamp that I can carry around from room to room.

How do you cope in a power cut, at night?

I have a few flash lights. I'll also light a candle if I need to. I just hope it doesn't happen when its has hot as it is right now.

myLot reputation of 98/100. Darkwing (7548)   ranked 13 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

Oh yes, or you'd lose your air conditioning, wouldn't you? We don't have that luxury in our homes, here, but then I suppose it never gets as hot as it does there.

Thank you for your contribution, my friend, and Brightest Blessings. x

ASbolutely nothing !

If anything happens to my power such as my electric meter running out of credit ( yes I have to fill it with credit by bying cards from the shop to stick into the meter).

It dosnt bother me as there are 24 hour supermarkets and garages to go to for refreshment or groceries if needed.

I can also go to bed until another day dawns.happy

Hmmm... twenty four hour supermarkets? What are they? The nearest twenty-four hour supermarket to me is at Gatwick or Brighton and I don't drive, so a need is created for backup stocks! lol.

I think you'd need a generator of your own to keep your computer running. I just don't know how you'd cope without it! rasp

Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution, my dear friend. x

myLot reputation of 72/100. deeeky (1743)   ranked 1,929 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

The generator would have to be coupled to the mains somehow ( for the modem to work) and earplugs suppled to all the neighbours.yawn

myLot reputation of 98/100. Darkwing (7548)   ranked 13 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

Lol... let them tap in, and they won't care about earplugs. thumbup

hello darkwing,
such a very good topic makes me think right now.
so far we havent had any power interruption out here and it makes me wonder what will gonna happen if it lasted for days coz all of our stuff here depends on electricity, we wont be able to cook as gas cookers is not allowed at the apartment, i guess we will have to go to the park and cook out or just dine in to a place that is available coz im sure they will have a generator to support them.
we only have flash light at home and some candles and that is all we have as our light and crackers and bread as our food - that would be horrible not to have an ice tea and coffee all day, wow!
i wish they will always inform everybody hours before they cut it so we can prepare ourselves but sometimes it is very unpredictable.
i remember when we are in china and we are living on the 23rd floor and my husband is at work and he have to walk all the way to our room using his cell phone as his light NOW that is worst hehe.

myLot reputation of 98/100. Darkwing (7548)   ranked 13 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

Oh boy... what would happen if there were floods outside, and you couldn't cook out? They can last for days on end, and even then, you don't get the electricity back straight away.

I like the part about your when you had to use your hubby's cell phone light! lol. The fact is that the workmen are often so busy watching the young mums walk down to collect their kids from school, that they chop through cables. Sometimes, also, they have to switch off the electricity because of the danger of the water, but they don't warn us. Oh my, that would involve too much work! lol.

Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution, my friend. Long time, no see. xx

myLot reputation of 95/100. jairgirl (924)   ranked 535 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

hahaha yeah that would be so terrible if there is a flood and we cannot cook out i guess we will just eat crackers and bread till we have the electricity back.
another reason why it is best to have your own home at least you can do whatever you have to and no need to worry about house rules like what we have right now.
true, it is so much work to inform everybody and always have to be cautious with all the stuff going on outside.
btw, sorry to just post right now i have so much stuff going on at home and been depressed lately so i have to mellow down but i am happy that i am feeling better each day.
appreciate the response.
do takecare

Awww, so sorry to hear about your depression, my friend. I hope you're much better now, and improving by the day.

Yes, bread and crackers and perhaps some cheese would be adequate, but it would be nice to have a camper stove I guess, as others have suggested... even if only to boil eggs and cook fish and fried stuff. It would also be quite simple to heat a can of soup on a camper stove.

Brightest Blessings and hope you're back to one hundred per cent, very soon, my friend. x

myLot reputation of 95/100. jairgirl (924)   ranked 535 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

hi thanks for the support,
yes i am feeling much better now seems like my hormones are going up and down lately BUT it's been like that since i can remember i am just glad that i dont depend on blue pill to treat myself.
yes, a camp stove is great to have as well as portable griller.
i remember when i was a kid we like to cook outside and we are just using 3 pieces of stone and some woods and we will have a lunch altogether as a group which is all fun, specially if you are at the river and fishing.
thanks for the response and for the warm wishes.
hope all is well out there.
takecare

Hi like you Darkwing I have plenty of candles and safety matches for if and when they occur. I am all electric too and haven't got a gas back up at all but am thinking about getting a little camping stove so if it ever happens I will be able to put a pan on for hot water. Ellie :D

myLot reputation of 98/100. Darkwing (7548)   ranked 13 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

Yes, I remember back in 1987, when we had the hurricane, that everybody without gas was rushing out to get those little camping stoves to boil water and cook breakfasts etc. I was lucky then, as I was in Brighton and had a gas fire and cooker, so we didn't go cold or hungry at least. I knew you'd have candles, somehow! lol.

Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution, my dear friend. By the way, I texted, and no reply as yet. sadxx

myLot reputation of 95/100. ellie333 (8050)   ranked 498 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

I don't know about being in shock... he could be, but I think it more likely, he's in cider! lol. xx

You're lucky there then, my friend. I like the idea of snuggling up inside a continental quilt, but I'd have to share it with a hot water bottle. rolleyes

lets just hope the power goes out at night
we have candles and our cell phone as an alarm clock
if it goes out during the day we are worse off because kids get bored easily and they get hungry without anyway to cook
we tend to do card and board games to entertain them and do sandwiches and chips for food until we regain power

myLot reputation of 98/100. Darkwing (7548)   ranked 13 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

Yes, good thinking about the cell phone. I guess if the cuts lasted for too long though, your batteries would go down. A hurricane lamp and a camper stove sound good to me, although I much prefer candles!

Brightest Blessings, my friend, and thank you for your contribution.

We just have candles. I love candles so I tend to have many of them around the house. We also have a few hurricane lamps that we drag out when the power goes especially if we know the power is going to be out for a few hours. We have access to several flashlights in case we're caught off guard so we can find the things we need. We have electric everything so if the power goes we can't cook. We do have some small gas grills in case we need to cook but we've never had to use them yet.

myLot reputation of 98/100. Darkwing (7548)   ranked 13 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

Let's hope you never have to use the gas grills, but you're well prepared, my friend. I love candles too... they flicker such a warm glow, and cast shadows.

Brightest Blessings and thank you for your contribution.

We would grab our big flashlight and get all our
candles out and light them at night and hope the electicity
is soon turned back on. we have not had a real power
outage for years. just a few short ones and that was
all.

myLot reputation of 98/100. Darkwing (7548)   ranked 13 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

No, we haven't really had what you would call a bad one here, for a while. Quite often, it goes out in the night and lasts till about ten in the morning. That's not so bad because you're in bed and not in need of electricity.

Brightest Blessings and thank you for your conribution my dear friend. x

When the power goes down if it is for sometime I simply find an excuse to free myself from work. If it continues for a long time then I make use of candles.

myLot reputation of 98/100. Darkwing (7548)   ranked 13 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

He he... I like the way you think about the good side of a power cut. I also like the warmth of candles... there's just something about candlelight which probably stems from my childhood.
