For now only true alternative source of energy are nuclear power plants, but we all know how dangerous they can be (Charnobyl). Although nuclear wastes of such power plant are huge problem too. Rich countries are paying those poor ones for taking those wastes and keeping them at their teritory somewhere. We are just unable to recycle them or reuse.
Energy from the wind isn't quite good. Wind power stations are very loud and they need big open spaces in the right places where wind blows all the time. It isn't good for birds too.
Energy from the sun is better option but it isn't perfect too. Just like wind power stations in needs huge spaces and in this case sunny area, like a desert.
Geothermal energy is good, but you can't put power station anywhere. It must be some kind of hot springs for it.
Those source of energy are refering to electric cars. It's not all the options but most of them.
We can make cars that would use ethanol as a fuel and special bacteries that produces it from the organic mass. There's also an idea to make car on fuel cells. Water would be fuel.

Nobody doubts that there is a need to have an alternative source of energy and if high oil prices do anything for us, it should be to stir an interest in developing alternative sources of energy. Human beings have shown that they are incredibly innovative when they have the needs thrust upon them.
I think all the sources mentioned are good but are problematic and like fosil fules, geography will play an important part in energy supply. I mean if we went solar, guess which part of the world would be a major contributor to the world's energy grid system - yes the Middle East. Things like geothermal and hydroelectricity are also dependent on geography - which may not be a bad thing. Poor countries like Nepal for example have lots of capability to develop hydro-power and can export it to larger growing economies like China and India.
One idea I've always enjoyed is the idea of "pedal power." Imagine if everyone had to produce a certain ammount of energy, which could then be stored in a giant battery for the rest of us to use. Would not be a bad idea - you get clean energy and society would have healthier people less prone to heart disease because many people will have had to excercise.
