For Those of Us Who Care, Saturday is Flag Day

It may not be much of a deal to most Americans, but Saturday is Flag Day. For all Americans who believe that patriotism is a four-letter word, here just for you is "I am Your Flag." I was created out of necessity to serve as the emblem of a people whose experiment in nationhood was as unique as the arrangement of my stars and stripes. I've stood up to time and troubles. I fluttered in the Fall air with General Washington and his loyal French allies at Yorktown. My fabric was shredded by cannonballs from British frigates, in the War of 1812, and I was carried in triumph by Andy Jackson at New Orleans. I've witnessed turmoil and bitterness, even lost some of my glory in mid-century in a war between brothers, but I was restored as a nation's emblem at Appomattox. I traveled West with the new frontier. I flew from the headlamps of the Iron Horse in Utah. I was with the prospectors at Sutter's Mill, with the cavalry against cattle rustlers, with the Rough Riders at San Juan Hill. I crossed the Marne with the doughboys anxious to make the world safe for democracy. I was with brave GIs storming the beaches at Normandy. I was raised over a shell-pocked hilltop at Iwo Jima and I stood by the grim-faced negotiators at Panmunjom. I was on that last helicopter from Saigon and with the men and women of Operation Desert Storm. I was raised over the rubble of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I've been folded smartly by soldiers and handed to weeping widows. I've covered the coffins of those who've served country and community. I am everywhere my people are. I am saluted and, scorned. I have been held with pride and I have been ridiculed, because I am everything my people are: proud, angry, happy, sad, vengeful, argumentative, ambitious, indifferent. I am your past. I am your future. I am your flag.

That was very nice. My husband is a vet and flies the flag every day. He missed taking the old one to the American Legion for the flag burning last year so he plans to go this time around.

Don't expect a lot of positive responses to this one. There are far too many people who hate America and everything it stands for, and a lot of them are currently in control of Congress, and they have a lot of supporters here on myLot.

This is the lest of my problem. I am taking fire because of my discussions on Gitmo.

You and me both. We got a bunch of civilians who think that everyone should have access to our courts with no regard to citizenship. According to the Geneva Convention rules, terrorists could conceivably be called rabble and shot. That sounds real good to me right now.

yeah, for some reason, some of us have the idea that the United States ought not be in the business of executing innocent people. Imagine that.

I am one of those that care. I am a proud American, in fact I am a really proud American. I am a Native American. Our Flag stands for something, it means something. Good post, we Americans do need a reminder of who we are, what we stand for, what we believe.

I come from an extremely patriotic family. My mother's family has a very deep history in the US Military dating back to the American Revolution, and my father's family came over from Germany and the UK to live the American dream - that was created through this patriotic blood - to its fullest. We fly the flag every day. We say "God Bless America." And we wore clothes bearing American Flag designs long, long before 9/11. I am always very happy to see people who are patriotic enough to care about this nation's history and the flag that symbolizes it as I am. Thank you ever-so much for this post, and although I have seen several versions of "I Am Your Flag" many times before, I always enjoy reading it very much as it reminds us that it takes strong shoulders to bear such a symbol of our nation. As Ronald Reagan put it: "The future doesn't belong to the faint-hearted. It belongs to the brave." This should not be forgotten by any American. And again, thanks for reminding everyone of Flag Day. I love this country and what it stands for, and it is great to for once see someone thankful for it and praising it rather than thinking it's cool to speak ill of it... Always nice to see anywhere.

This is a great post. I'm very proud of the FLAG and what it represents. I have 5 brothers in the military. Three have served in Iraq, one of those served in Iraq twice. One was a guard at Abu Ghraib, one was involved in finding foreign terrorists entering across the syrian border. I have two brothers currently in Afghanistan, one of them has been there twice, the other has been there at least three times. My brothers have been in Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Kosovo, Bosnia, Israel, and several other places. I am incredibly proud of their service. My father was in the military, my uncle was in the military, one of my grandfathers was in the military. I'm very proud to be from a military family that believes in its countries ideals. Thank you for sharing this important post. The flag represents our ideals and I'm proud of the men and women who defend its ideals. Patriotism is supporting your country ALL of the time and your government when it deserves it. - Mark Twain. (and right now, the government is severely lacking IMHO)
