The word of the day....

A little while back I received an email from my old college roommate/best friend/condifant/English major buddy.....and she like me loves using big words occasionally....it is our right as we love the written word. LOL In that email she described me as altruistic, which I have always loved that word. And I knew what he meant, but looked it up all the same and yes it does describe my character well. But the real reason why I am posting this discussion is for all the mylotters out there who are either in school (as it does not hurt to learn something new) and out of school who want to learn something new...and for the mylotters who are trying to learn the English language. So I am going to try my best to post a new word, maybe not everyday, and challenge you guys to use it in a sentence....ewww how elementary school of me. LOL Altruistic: (Adjective)(French) 1)unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others. 2)behavior by an animal that is not beneficial to or may be harmful to itself but that benefits others of its species. Good luck and see who comes up with the most creative sentence.

Thank you for that! I love learning new words, I try to remember them and make use of them over the next few days. My sentence is (and I hope this makes sense): Despite the fact that she had hurt herself in the car crash, Jenny's altruistic nature meant that she spent time making sure others were ok before sorting out her own medical needs. I hope that makes sense? I love the last new word I learnt - defenestration - it means to throw someone out of a window :) lol!

Taface, I have loved your discussions on words... I sometimes think about a certain word and whether or not I like the way it rolls off my tongue. Altruistic is one of the words I like to say.. LMAO But I have always believed that ALTRUISM Not to be confused with simple kindness and benevolence, as in common usage, but defined literally as “other-ism” or “living for others.” Used more in the definition of certain animal survival techniques then in defining human nature.

And you have made a good point. By exeplifying the beauty of the English language and how the meanings can change due to the subject matter.... And thank you Angel....you have now lead me to today's word of the day. Extra kudos for you!!!

I absolutely love using big words. It makes me feel so smart when someone has to ask me what a word I said means. It is such an altruistic thing you are doing in your endeavor to enlighten us masses and broaden our rather sparse vocabularies with more complex and varied words. I also tend to run-on sentences!
