How Hot is Too Hot? |
|
When I go swimming, I like the pool temperature to be over 70 degrees. But sometimes, it gets up to 90 degrees out here, which is way too hot. Anything too far over 80 just isn't relaxing for me anymore. And while I have gone swimming in 50 degree water before, the pins and needles feeling doesn't make me want to stay in very long. I prefer right at 80 degrees if possible, but we don't heat our pool so I get whatever nature gives me. What about you? What temperature do you prefer?

Pigglies (3445) | 4 months ago | Wow, I know the lakes get posted like that out here... even if they aren't hot though sometimes. Lots of nasty bugs that can thrive there. In California our oceans are still cold even if the temperature is in the triple digits thankfully, not that I go to the ocean much at all. I've heard the gyms here heat their pools too much though even in the winter. I wouldn't join one just for swimming or something though anyway, I would swim in my pool in December before paying those prices.

anawar (1083) | 4 months ago | Pigglies_ I got a discount on my monthly memebership at the gym. I only used the pool twice_ I worked with the machines and the weights for exercise. I moved and I don't have a membership here. It's not good for me because I won't exercise unless I have a place to go. I sit too much. I don't like the ocean either. I hate the salt water getting in my face and whenever I swim, I drift so far away from my spot, I have trouble finding my beach chair!

Pigglies (3445) | 4 months ago | I want to think that I would go to the gym, but I know I wouldn't eventually. Currently I am managing to do at least one type of exercise per day, even if it is only for 5 minutes (like riding an exercise bike, which ours is a racing generator powered one and it's hard to maintain 20 miles per hour with resistance for longer than that). The only time I was motivated enough to go to the gym, I really had no need to go. I was going to ride my bicycle 7 miles to get there and 7 miles back because I had no car at that time. Then I realized the ride there and back would be enough of a work out. Plus, I was already riding over 100 miles a week so that had to be a workout in itself. Although, now that they're building a gym within a mile of my house I'm reconsidering if I might go because it is so close.

anawar (1083) | 4 months ago | Pigglies_ It is easier to get your body over to the gym if it's close to your house. The gym here is far enough away so I have to factor in the cost of gas. If I didn't live in the foothills of mountains, I would try riding a bike. It saves on gas and is great exercise. I choose swimming over any type of exercise, but I don't have a pool!

Pigglies (3445) | 4 months ago | I also live in the hills, but I've grown up with hills so I had to get used to riding a bike in them. Where I lived before, there were also hills, but not as many. If I'm just riding for exercise sometimes I will try to find flat land (the first day I found a good spot for flat land, I rode 40 miles because it was just so easy).

| 2. KateM0414 (46) | 4 months ago | I prefer a heated pool, maybe around 70 to 80 degrees. I agree, swimming in a pool that is too hot is just not enjoyable at all. I also hate swimming in water that is too cold.

Pigglies (3445) | 4 months ago | For our area, unheated in the summer it is always at least 70. Usually our pool is 80 in the summer, unheated. My grandparents heat their pool however, and it is always at close to 90 degrees. Too warm for me!

3. ElicBxn (8162) | 4 months ago | 80 sounds good. You think you have trouble with warmer water, I'm in Texas and the water gets really warm in the pools come August.

Pigglies (3445) | 4 months ago | Is Texas much hotter than Southern CA? I could never live there if it is. When we get in the triple digits out here like today, all I want to do is stay inside (which, luckily since I was stuck at work, was still productive because I made money being inside instead of laying around watching TV).
| |
|
|
ElicBxn (8162) | 4 months ago | Maybe not, but I do think, because of those coastal mountains over in southern CA we might just be more humid. Very miserable when the sweat won't evaporate.
| |
|
|
Pigglies (3445) | 4 months ago | Probably definitely more humid there, it's almost always a dry heat around here, which I like better than hot and sticky. On the days we do get humidity we all complain.;)

4. chrysz (1046) | 4 months ago | I don't like cold water as I get rashes all over when over exposed to cold temperature so I would prefer hotter pools. There are lots of hot spring resorts here in our place and it is really of my advantage. I am not that familiar with the temperature but there are pools here that are really hot and several pools have varied temperature so you can chose which one is good for you.

Pigglies (3445) | 4 months ago | Oh, I've known some people that went to the hot springs. They said those go up to 130 degrees! Only the most seasoned hot spring goers can go in the hottest ones I guess. I know our jacuzzi got to 120 once and I nearly fainted. But that is great to have such a place available for those who enjoy it. That is interesting about the rashes, wow. I wouldn't swim in cold pools either if that happened to me.

chrysz (1046) | 4 months ago | I've been rushed to a hospital for dipping in a cold pool in one December afternoon. I thought the alcohol I've taken is enough to maintain my body heat but it was not. From then on, I have decided not to swim when I know I cannot take the temperature of the pool. Surely, diphenhydramine injections are effective to make the rashes and itching subside but the stress it had caused me and my family is unbearable.

6. cg1109 (145) | 4 months ago | To your question I live in texas and the weather here so far has been reaching 107 degress and I cannot enjoy sitting out in my patio because it is just to hot out here, and believe it or not it is still spring weather, if it were 70 degrees I would definetly be able to enjoy myself out here. Pigglies (3445) | 4 months ago | But if it was 107 outside, would you still go swimming? It's been about that hot lately here too (Southern California). Our pool is still in the low 80's though so it is okay to swim. But I don't sit outside either in this heat.

7. sturner03 (303) | 4 months ago | Here it will get up to the hundreds in the summer. Right now its mid 90's. It is so hot you feel like you want to die. I tried working an outside job and the heat drained me quick as can be. It's also usually at least 80 percent humidity. The air is thick.
| |
| |
|
|
Pigglies (3445) | 4 months ago | Yeah, it's been in the hundreds here too. When it's hot and humid there, will you still go swimming? Or is it too hot to do that? This discussion is actually about the temperature of pool water.

8. golfproo (1614) | 4 months ago | Hi There, I am not a fan of water that is too warm at all. I much prefer it to be cool. Not cold...but cool. To me there is no sense going swimming to cool off if the water is too warm. I may as well just go take a bath!:) cheers,

| 9. im_tiggs (74) | 3 months ago | I owned a Health Spa and a Therapy pool for 6 yrs. but I sold it due to personal reasons) The average temperature for any pool is 90, and sorry to tell you, but it is NOT that hot, it is ideal for swimming and Pool therapy. Most people wanted it warmer but you cannot go over 94. The hottub was a constant 104. I would not get many people if my pool was only 80 - most would sit in the hot tub all night. lol and I could not legally do that. You need to realize that The STATE regulates the pool temperatures...unfortunately in this business, it's not Burger kings Motto.. lol YOU CAN'T HAVE IT YOUR WAY! but your own pool Try it! I WILL ALWAYS TAKE A WARMER POOL!

|
Pigglies (3445) | 3 months ago | Is therapy swimming less vigorous though than swimming laps? When I just get into a pool that is 90, it feels hot. But 85 feels okay when I just get in, and doesn't get uncomfortable until I actually start swimming. My grandparents always heat their pool to about 90 degrees and they really like it, but they don't do very vigorous swimming either since they are in their 80s. I've also heard that the older you get, the more you like warmer water. Our hot tub has gotten over 110 before and I thought I would faint, but my grandparents don't have a problem with those temperatures.
