My cat's flea medicine is no longer working!

What should I do? I give our cat Frontline flea medicine every month. He first got fleas about a year ago when my husband's family brought their dogs to our house. The Frontline seemed to keep the fleas under control up until a couple of months ago. Since applying it this past month, I can't tell that it's helped anything! I've actually had live fleas jump ON ME! It's so gross! We had our regular pest control guy come and spray two weeks ago, but I can't tell that there's any reduction in fleas? Can fleas become accustomed to the same flea treatment? Is there a brand that works better? HOW CAN I GET RID OF THESE FLEAS?!

Years ago I went to the vet an bought a Premise Spray and sprayed everything in the whole house. Carpets, furniture, beds, baseboards, etc. I washed all the sheets and anything removable and made sure to have them in the dryer on hot for at least 1/2 hr to kill the fleas, too. Then, I bathed the cats. The stuff cost me over $200, but it guaranteed no fleas for 240 days, 7 mos. It worked and we never had fleas again. I don't use anything on my dog or cats anymore as we have never had fleas in this house. My dog and cats don't know what fleas are. I LOVE IT!!! They are just horrible, I feel for you, really.

Glad to help. My vet is an unending source of information and he is glad to give it for the sake of the animals. That is rare nowadays. It was well worth the price tag to be rid of the filthy pests for good. Also, when I moved from that place (I think the house was infested when we moved in, on the beach, sand), I downsized a lot of unneccesary stuff that I thought might harbour some eggs or anything. So I ditched alot of stuffed animals, clothing we weren't wearing much, anything fabric, etc. But the ones that had too much sentimental value, were sprayed, then packed in tightly closed garbage bags for months before reuse at the new place.

Thank you for the recommendation Annie! You are always full of great advice! I just ordered 2 cans of this stuff - I REALLY hope it works! Fleas are just SO GROSS!!!! I've been vaccuuming like a mad woman, treated the cat, and washed everything today. Hopefully, this stuff will get here soon, and this flea crud will be history in no time! :)

Fleas are like any other little pest in that they slowly develop a resistance to chemicals, particularly if everyone is using the same one. And Frontline is a very popular flea control. Change your brand, and you might find that the fleas are not resistant to that one. If you ask your vet, I'm sure s/he will be able to advise.

That's what I was afraid of. I've already have 5 more months of the Frontline, but I just bought one that Walmart had. I think it's called Hartz. I'm going to try it at the end of this week. My only concern is: Can you over-treat a cat with flea treatment?

I believe you can, so take it easy with the second lot! I'm sure I read somewhere that garlic is supposed to be good for keeping fleas away. But I suppose you need to get rid of them in the first place first ... Good luck!

I think fleas can build up a tolerance when you're using the same flea treatment over and over. I've found Advantage actually does a better job for fleas than Frontline. Frontline works great for ticks though. I've been buying the natural flea treatments made by Natures Guardian and it seems to work pretty well without the worry of putting chemicals on the cats. There's another one by Sentry called Natural Defense that the ingredients look to be the same I plan to try too. As for the fleas in your house. Try sprinkling Borax on the carpet, leave for 15-30 minutes and then vacuum. You can find Borax in the laundry isle. It's about $3.00 for a 4 lb box at Walmart. Good luck!

We have fleas on our cats too. The outdoor cats have fleas and those fleas are coming into our house and getting onto our cats. Usually the fleas stay on our cats but sometimes one of us will get a flea bite. I looked up some flea treatments online. Here are some links with more flea prevention tips and ideas. http://fleabusters.blogspot.com/
