How do I create a gradient effect? email this discussion to a friend?

I'm a completely amateur photographer just so you know. I need to know if there is a way to make normal light fade to red light over a distance (left to right). I tried taping red cellophane over half of my reading lamp, but that didn't work. Should I try using two lamps or what? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You need to use a gradient filter but I don't know if they have them in red. What you have is a neutral density gradient filter which is a filter that has one part darker and it slowly gets lighter. This is used when you are taking a photo with part of the photo darker and you want to compensate for the different in exposure. An example would be a landscape shot with a dark foreground and a bright sky. by darkening only the sky you can bring out the detail of the foreground and still get the color and details of the sky.

Hope this helps.

I think I follow. I know practically nothing about photography, but I get what you are saying. I think I will just have to take one normal light and one red light and then blend them together with the computer.
