I am registered at many sites and I may have the same username at some of them but I have different passwords for all of them. Many of the passwords are similar but none are exactly the same.
Some sites I don't login for a long time so I do need to keep the password where I can find it, but when I write them down I disguise the passwords by using a shortened or lengthened version and only I can know the full password. If someone steals my laptop or my list of passwords they will not be able to login to any of the sites.
I did have web account locked because I could not read what I had written down and kept entering an incorrect code number!

I use a code system to remember my passwords. I have them written down but not the code. For example I might use the code word Native meaning the Native American Tribe that lived in the area I grew up in. Or It might be Gerald's Phone which could be the numerical number or his name and last four digits. These simple codes have meaning to me but not to others. I have found this a simple way to keep track of my passwords. I have left instruction what to do if something happens to me how to interpert the codes. I can look at the list and know what I am talking about as I use about 6 different combinations. It works for me.

I try and remember them. On some sites that I don't log onto often, I sometimes have to go through a bunch of different passwords and/or usernames before I remember the right one.

With all the websites that you subscribe to these days and passwords expiring after a few months I have to use a third party application to store my passwords.
That way all I have to do is log into that and it gives me the details.
Lets just hope I don't forget my password to that - what a nightmare that would be.
The program is called Any Password and I believe it is free for private use.
