Many people do not realize that the price Medicare pays for medical equipment and medical services is set by Congress. That's right! Congress establishes how to determine what should be paid for any specific item that Medicare pays for and then puts that amount into effect across the nation. Well, we all know about effects of lobbyists on our politicians and medical equipment providers and other sections of the medical community have never been shy about using lobbyists. The American people have complained for years about high medical costs and the fact that Medicare has serious money problems. Our Congressmen swear they WILL do something about it; and then, out trot the lobbyists with their fists full of cash and nothing gets accomplished. An example of this is going on in Congress right now - http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/25/business/25leonhardt.html?th&emc=th This proposal had the potential to make some serious changes and reduce the annual cost of Medicare without depriving anyone of the medical equipment and treatments that they need. Instead, the lobbyists have crawled out of the woodwork with their fists full of cash and our Congressmen are already backing down. I know they say some bad things aboout lawyers and politicians; but, in my opinion, lobbyists are even lower. What do you think?
