Are they promoting Staycations instead of Vacations where you are?

I'm hearing the term "staycation" more and more these days by retailers trying to make hanging out in your backyard sound like great fun (so buy or kiddie pools and stuff!) and by newscasters promoting upcoming community events. This new word makes me very sad, especially since my husband and I may be forced to canel our plans to drive 1,000 miles back home to see family this August because of the high cost of gas. My oldest daughter, who is down here in Florida with me, and her family will not be able to make the trip next week for the same reason, which is a big disappointment for them and the family members up north. How do you feel about this new spin being put on the fact that many of us are going to be staying home this summer instead of getting away and having some fun?

I think that it is a great shame that some people are having to stay at home and change their plans to travel this summer. The cost of gas has got very high in my home country although distances are not much compared to larger countries. Many people in countries like the USA, Canada and Australia have relatives living many miles away. It is difficult for them to visit them now. One thousand miles is a long way and it must be annoying that you will have to miss this trip to see your family. My local council has produced a magazine that details all the fun things happening locally this summer. I booked my flight to Latvia in December 2007. My baby son and I have recently come home from it. I love to travel and I will continue travel to as many different countries as possible in my lifetime. Good luck with the future.

Thank you and I agree, it is a shame. I have a two year old granddaughter who I haven't met yet and was really looking forward to seeing her in person this summer. I guess I'll have to settle for pictures for a while longer.

While I completely understand your disappointment and sadness in not being able to travel to visit family members, staying home can be a fun vacation with just a little thought and planning. The disappointment at not seeing family members will still be a bit tough, but the 'staycation' idea can be a fun one. Stock up on good food to grill n chill, turn off the phones and truly chill out together. If you have wee ones, fill up the baby pools, turn on the sprinklers, bring out the picnic stuff and have a beach day in the backyard. A bonfire at night or a family movie night are fun things to do at home this summer as well. Again, missing family members is a tough one but fun can be had at home! ~~

You have a great attitude and I *really* like the idea about turning off the phones! We'll probably end up going to the beach for a couple of days (we live in Florida) and we usually have the kids and grandkids over on the weekend for a cookout so maybe I'll do something special in that area while I'm off, too.

Well my brother had to cancel thier trip here to visit us cause of the costs of gas. I think the media and the retail stores are encouraging people to vacation at home this year. I know Kmart is really pushing thier backyard fun stuff. I see thier commercials all the time. The underlying reason of course is the cost of transportation due to the gas hykes. My Brother only comes once a year and it is the only time I get to see my nephew so it sucks.

Same here. My husband and I looked forward to going back home all year and now it looks like we're not going to be able to make the trip since we just had to have the transmission in his truck repaired on top of the outrageous gas prices.

Yea its a bummer that trips have to be canceled because of gas. Hopefully gas prices will eventually go down instead of keep going up :)

I hope so, too, but we're going to have to shoot for next summer now. Oh well, at least the kids can have fun at the new water park in town!
