Would you quit your job, if you never got a raise or promotion? |
|
If you never got a raise in income on your job, or promotion, would you quit? Or, suffer in silence? Currently, I'm working from home, so whenever I want a raise in income, I just have to work a little harder. But if I were working outside the home, then promotions and raises would be a big deal for me. I can't imagine that I would want to stay at the same job if they never gave me recognition. It just wouldn't seem worth it. What about you?

1. Katesmama (3226) | 6 months ago | Every job I've ever had put in place raise scheduals and proceedures, so getting a raise was a matter of waiting for the proper time or doing what was necessary. I just met a lady that was at this type of job, and had insisited she be paid more when covering a night shift, because those on a full time night shift get incentive money, as happens in most places. Well, they told her that if she wanted night shift pay, she'd have to go to night shift permantently. She said it wasn't fair, they told her she could turn down the extra night shifts anytime she wanted. She said that she needed to overtime. They said, you can nhave it if you want it, but at your normal overtime rate, not the night shift overtime rate. So, she quit. Now she has no income at all. And she's blasting the company online and to everyone she talks to about how she was treated. I see both sides. This is not a market where people can give up paying jobs.

beautyqueen26 (8041) | 6 months ago | It's the truth! I worry when my spouse says he doesn't need a promotion. Then he tells me that his supervisor gets the same pay that he does, but does twice the work. That doesn't sound like much of a promotion! I wonder why some people put up with that.

4. Ruthep (4148) | 6 months ago | I would certainly look for a new job. I would have to put up with it til I found better. My husband is going through that now. His employee contract is up July first and everyone can just feel the company trying for a pay cut. They are already warning of raising insurance. The union in place is not too good so wages will probably be cut. He told me if that happens he will quit. He doesn't get treated great there anyway and he is already looking around. He gets no thanks and he is one of the hardest working, he just ends up with more work while the dayshift get by with doing nothing. He works at a casino so the place is always busier at night. Companies really should try to keep good employees happy.

beautyqueen26 (8041) | 6 months ago | My hubby was in the same spot about a month ago. One of his supervisors confided in him that they planned to cut hours for everyone and so his post would probably be gone for good. So we saved money like crazy and cut every expense that wasn't need. Lucky for us, they just cut back hours and didn't cut the job. He gets to spend more time at home now. So, it's working out. We're making up the income in other ways.

Ruthep (4148) | 6 months ago | It is good that you can do that. It is nice to be able to spend more time as a family. When my husband lost his job at Maytag and ended up going back to school, financially it was hard but it was great being able to be together.

5. bianca0531 (331) | 6 months ago | I am cureently working at home. However if I am working in a certain company I would certainly want to raise my income or promote me. If the company can't avail it and if I can't find any other job, I will definitely stay. It is better to stay in a company who can afford you less rather than to have no job at all.

7. katsmeow1213 (2392) | 6 months ago | I guess it would depend on the job, and I'd have to know certain things ahead of time. If it were a job I really wanted and knew that I would never get a raise or promotion, and took it anyways, then I should not expect the raise or promotion. However if upon taking the job they say that there are opportunities for advancement and I never recieved them, I would probably begin looking elsewhere.

8. Shaun72 (11381) | 6 months ago | I have changed jobs in the past do to this. Years ago I worked at Walmart. They never did make me full time. I worked There for around 4 years. There were people that were getting hired and getting moved around me. I got tired of them doing this so I found another job and left them it was in St. Augustine but it was a full time job.

10. williamjisir (10136) | 6 months ago | Hello dear beauty queen. It is a very good discussion to begin with. This is also what I have been thinking about in the past two years. Well, I have been working in the same school for eleven years so far, but my boss is not generous at all. I am not complaining about my boss, but because he and his wife never mention about giving us teachers a rise positively unless we ask to. I came to work in my present school in the year of 1997 and after three years I decided to leave for another school in another city close to the sea, the name of the city is Wenzhou, in the south of Zhejiang Province, a very rich city in China, and I had already fixed my job there with a higher salary. I made this decision just after we had the first school meeting before the autumn or fall semester on August 26th, 2000. Because my workload was less than I used to have, which would affect my salary. I didn't say anything but started to make a call to see if teachers were needed in another school that I preferred. Happily and luckily enough, I was accepted after being interviewed for half an hour when I reached the school for the interview. The guy in charge of the interview told me that there were altogether eight competitive applicants for the same teaching job and that I was accepted as I was more competitive than the rest and asked me to go to have their first school meeting the next day. I promised to come back to their school in a day or two as it was far from my school and I needed to go back to take my luggage. When I got back to my school, I didn't know that my boss was looking for me everywhere. I told my boss that I would leave the school and start to work for another one. At first, I didn't say anything about my complaint of not having got my salary raised, but reduced actually with the workload reduced. I just said that I would like to work in my hometown. But he and his wife begged me to stay. Then I had to tell them about my dissatisfaction and the reason why I wanted to leave. After that, I was given a rise and got promoted as the group leader of the teaching group as I used to in my previous public school where I had worked. Another three years passed, that was 2003, still they didn't mention about the rise of my salary. This time I talked to my lady boss, who is actually the boss in charge of finance of the school. I got a rise. Now it is five years since I got a negative rise. You know, the price for everything has been getting higher and higher, but still not a single word of offering us a rise from my boss. I am right now thinking about this matter, whether to ask for a rise or not. I have good reasons to ask for a rise based on my contribution to and excellent working performance for the school. Right now I am at a loss about this. But I think that I will have a try to see what my boss will say. It seems that we have to fight for a rise each time. Many of the teachers are leaving for companies or other schools and will not stay for another year because of this. I hope that my boss will think about my asking for a rise once I talk to them or to be exact, to my boss's wife, my lady boss. I don't feel good if I always have to ask for a rise, but the problem is that they will give you a rise unless you ask for. Sighing and shaking my head. Anyway I hope to be lucky if I open my mouth for the rise. Thank you so much for the discussion that I have made a lengthy response in the hope that it won't bore you, my dear beauty queen. Enjoy your life and work.

williamjisir (10136) | 6 months ago | Quoted, "maybe they are hoping that everyone will be happy with their current jobs at the current pay." Answer: they do think so. They always think that all the teachers are happy with the pay they offer us, but it is not like that because everything nowadays is on the rise. That is why so many teachers have made a decision to leave for a better-paid job. Right now I am still thinking about whether to ask or not. I will have to wait another week before I ask for it and will have to think about it carefully. In fact, I love my school, but I worry that I will be turned down or they won't be happy with me if I do so. thinking thinking and thinking carefully about it... If I have made any progress, I would be happy to let you know about it. You are a trustworthy beauty queen. Thanks so much.
