and everything seeming to go higher and higher, how are you doing with making ends meet? Like when it comes to being able to afford to put Gas in your Carm buy groceries, etc. it now takes at least 2 incomes, and sometimes 3 to do this. We are struggling at times, and wanting to Sell our Condo and buy something different in the process as well. It seems like you can almost never make enough money these days to completely be able to make ends meet as it seems like the more you make, the more you spend, etc.

So what are some money saving hints and tips you have found that you could offer to help people be able to live in this tight economy, and have you had to take on another job, or part time job to be able to do so? Looking forward to everyone's thoughts...

I do not go anywhere hardly with my car except to the market and to church and docs appointments... I spend somewhere around $500 a month on groceries for a family of 3 for a month. It breaks me really.

Wow. That is a lot for food. We spend about $300 for a family of 3. My son is 9 and almost has the same appetite as an adult. We buy a lot of fruits and veggies and a lot of organic products.

myLot reputation of 95/100. OreoCookie3 (22476)  4 years ago

$300 per month is only $100 per person. I could not buy lots of fruit for that to last a month. I buy mostly portion control foods for my daughter and I and her husband I buy stuff he likes. I rarely cook stuff from scratch because not everyone eats the same things. I buy cereal in the 8 pack single servings... usually I buy 6 packs of them.. and they are 2 for $5 so that is $15 right there. My son in law likes lots of beef and I don't eat eat and neither does my daughter. So I buy him the patties and the steaks already prepackaged into single servings. I buy frozen veggies made by Green Giant that comes in a sauce and I just nuke them as I want them. I spent over $500 last month and we are already getting low.. but payday is very soon, so it will work out.

I was thinking the same thing...WOW thats a lot of money for a family of 3. We are family of 4 and dont spend close to that. But then I read your other comment and relized why. HAHA. We dont buy ANY heat and eat stuff. To expensive and my kids dont really like it. And I love cooking...so making meals from scratch is fun for me. And if my kids dont like it then they will go hungry HAHA. Im not their personal chef.

Where do you shop for groceries? I am a stay-at-home Mom of two and we(boyfriend and I) spend about 50.00 a week on groceries. We don't buy name brand and we get lots of meat, veggies and fruits. I don't think it is good that the USA is going through this time of trials, but I do believe it gives everyone a double take on what they REALLY need versus what they think they need. My family and I have always tried to make ends meet. I start my own business online soon. I am hoping it will bring extra income. Again, I seriously think it is good that everyone see where they can really save money and get what they really need. We have all been spoiled by those little "extras". Thank God the USA has been so blessed that we all HAVE extra! We have one vehicle and my boyfriend uses it to go to work and back. We only go to Wal-Mart and run errands when we need to. I like the picture of the cat!

I shop at Walmart. I have to buy foods packed with calcium and one thing I buy is Dannon Smoothies.. 4 comes in a pack and they are $3 something for the pack.. well I usually have to buy about 12 packs of 4 so that makes 48. I drink them 3 times a day. I have osteoporosis and need the calcium. Everything is expensive. I eat portion control, and don't want a lot of waste. If I cook from scratch it gets thrown away because no one eats it.

No one eats the same things.. so I buy a lot of Lean Cuisine, Weight Watcher, and South Beach Diet brands. I've lost 25 pounds and that is important that I keep it up. $500 a month is only $166 a person per month, which isn't much. Buying fruit.. keeping bananas in the house, keeping everything in the house ads up. I spend over $30 on yogurt smoothies.. but I need the calcium that they have. I keep cheese in the house.. again for the calcium... and I don't allow us to run out and have to make due. I have on occasion but I end up suffering for it. Having a gastric bypass I can't just eat anything.

Yes, I see your point. I was not trying to judge you, please don't think that. We do the best we can. You are right, that isn't much. Some weeks, we are lucky we can get three meals a day. I've lost weight (which is a good thing). The kids will eat before me. Some days, I will eat one thing and some days, none. The kids get what they need..and that's what counts! I am blessed to have them in my life. If I have to sacrifice my own needs for them, it will happen. Just trying to be a good parent. And I'm definite that you do the same thing. God bless you and your family!

I don't have a car, so I don't hae to worry about gas directly, although the price of gas affects shipping, postage, and eerything else that involves transportation.

It's cheaper for me to use the internet at he coffee shop than it is at home, so I use it here, rather than payig the extra to hae internet at home, when I'm never actually there.

Live in communities and trade for things thus avoid paying the triple taxes on things. Go back to old ways of living and eating to cut out excess luxury. Get involved with a Co operative group down size and recycle. Be concscience about what you do and how you spend. Do more things yourself for yourself. become more self sufficent. This seems like the mainstream way of thought nowdays.

The bets money saving tip: clip your coupons and watch for sales. Take a bit of work but I have saved a ton of money that way. I have a friend that actually got money back one day while grocery shopping. If I wasn't there to witness it, I would never have believed it!

Make a meal plan and stick to it! Make items like bread and pasta at home. Try to do at least one "cheap" meal a week - like beans and rice.

You can also find online coupon sites now. You just print them out on your printer. Plus if you do a search just typing in "free stuff" you will find all sorts of things. Companies love to send you free samples to try their products. LOL

I've always been frugal (some call me cheap. LOL). Always looking for a cheaper way. I've been this way most of my life, so I really haven't had to make many changes to live with today's economy.

I belong to a site called "The Dollar Stretcher". The site is: http://www.stretcher.com/.... You don't have to subscribe if you go there, but this page in particular has all the information about the site. I'm not getting a penny from it... it's not a referral thing. They send you weekly emails with great money-saving tips. And, if you have a tip that they haven't covered, you can send it in and they will post it in one of their weekly ezines.

I love the tips they give in this site!

I was already working extra hours just to make ends meet before the rising prices of everything. I'm just thankful that God has provided me with everything that I need, might not be everything I want but I've never gone hungry or not had a roof over my head or gone without transportation. For these things I am very thankful. Because I know there are many without the things that I just listed.

You are so right. People often forget others are struggling. Unfortunately I've turned into one of those strugglers. My ONE extra I allow myself is internet. I'm disabled, and also lost my part time job due to my health last month. I was always one of those who donated to Food Banks when I was healthy. Now I'm going to have to utilize one of those myself. We just never know what our future will bring do we?

The first thing I try to do is to cut back on my driving. I consolidate my errands to the point of only maybe making one or two stops. I clip coupons and eat at home much more. We don't go to the movies very often either. Having said all that, I can say that our life is pretty good. I do feel bad though for those who have to struggle to pay their rent and buy food. That's a scary situation to be in right now with the price of oil being so darn high.

I really should find a job because they have stopped working my husband 5 days a week. For the time anyways...we are just waiting for the day when he starts working normally. Which they are saying will be sometime in July! WOOT WOOT. We only have the one vehicle and very few actual bills. Car, internet/cable/phone, and electric. That is it. Because we JUST baught the car because our truck was getting ready to poop on us and he hasnt been working normal...we have gotten behind. But we will get back to where we should be. It is just taking time. We have also started ONLY getting what we need...not what we want...when we go grocery shopping. All the snack stuff we were buying has dissappeared in our home. My husband has also started taking leftovers for lunch at work and that has saved us a little bit of money as well.
