Do those of you with insomnia find that it bothers you more when life is throwing you a curve?

Last month I lost my job due to increased health problems. Then I was put on oxygen, then my rent went up, etc etc. I try to go to sleep at night and lay there wide awake my mind going in circles over every little detail....

I've got to get the dogs nails trimmed, I forgot to mail those housing forms, I need to find those insurance papers and get them sent in, the cat box needs changed, did I remember to switch the laundry? Did I roll up the car windows, what did I do with that stupid phone bill?... on and on and on.

I've even tried lists. I figure if I wrote it all out it wouldn't need to chase around in my mind. But no, that didn't work. Now I just had it documented that I'm slowly going nuts one problem at a time.

Sometimes I wish I could be a child again. We played outside until we were worn out and it was time for a bath and bed. We fell asleep with the curtains blowing and listening to the crickets chirp as the stars came out. Why can't things be that simple again?

Why oh why can't I sleep.....

It sounds to me like you have so much on your plate right now. Too bad when you write these things down on a list you can't just put them in a drawer until morning and all would be ok. Are you sleeping late in the mornings? I sure hope that soon you will be able to get to sleep at a decent time and have a good nights sleep.
I agree with you about the good "ole" days, they were so nice and simple back then weren't they? Even now some nights I like to go out on the patio and lay in the lounger and listen to the night sounds and look at the stars.

I miss those days of feeling comfortable enough to go outside at night. I grew up in the midwest and loved it outside at night. Now that I live in south Texas night isn't the time to be outside. Thats when the crawly things come out, like tarantulas, scorpions and snakes. After finding 4 tarantulas on my porch last year I'm more cautious now. I finally got to sleep, and did sleep til almost 930. Thankfully I don't have anything in my life that interfers. I can do what I want whenever.

I have tried twice now to send a private message and I am still having a problem getting them to go through. I was just wanting to know where in south Texas are you? I am in Corpus Christi.

I find it helps to plug a radio into your earhole with a good talkback show on! I like quizzes, too - and it really takes your mind off all the worries that keep swirling around in your brain keeping you awake. Before long, I doze off - usually when I WANT to stay awake to hear the end of a story! Try it - you'll be surprised!

Thanks for the suggestion, I may just have to do that.:)

I know how you feel. I used to have a terrible time falling asleep at night..Just like you, things spinning in my head, going over the day, going over the next day, thinking about life, relationships.grrrrrr goes on and on

I also would wake up during the night which would drive me nuts. I was always able to go back to sleep, but it drove me crazy waking up in the first place.

I told my doctor about these problems and he put me on Lunesta. It took a few weeks but it has really helped. They say to take it right before you go to bed, but I take it at least 30 minutes before bed and it seems to work better for me.

I'm not one to be on sleeping pills, in fact it scares me that they could be addictive. But compared to not getting any sleep, it's worth it to take them.

You might talk to your doctor about it.

Hope you sleep better soon!

Thanks Char.:) I know my doctor won't give me sleeping pills, with good reason I'm afraid. I was on Ambien for about 6 years and I was one of those "Ambien sleepwalkers." I did all sorts of crazy things while asleep, the worst of which was taking a nasty fall back in 2006 which caused me to end up in the hospital for surgery and my leg which will never be the same again. I do take Melatonin, and most nights it helps. But lately (and I know its the pain doing it) I just can't sleep very well. Glad the Lunesta helps you.:)

I have heard that some people have had the sleepwalking problem like you describe. I'm so sorry you had that problem and no I wouldn't suggest Lunesta for you. Thank goodness I haven't had any of that sort of problem so it works for me. I hope you can find something that works for you.

Sure! I've been there too.
Many times when I have too
much to deal with in life, I
just end up rehashing it in
bed that night.

The key might be to blog or journal
all these events out in detail like
you're doing now. Include all details
on a private blog or elsewhere that you
don't mind being so candid.

This will help you see the issues
and prioritize to take action.

Another thing that works for me is
visualization.

When you close your eyes and lie in bed
in a perfecly dark room, you can see
images in your head.

This might take practice, but most
people can do it.

When I'm tired but can't shut my brain
off, I simply redirect the brain
energy to another activity.

Sometimes, I will imagine myself posting
on MyLot or sorting coupons or reorganizing
a closet.

Any activity that forces your brain to
stop analyzing current daily problems.

Sometimes I will rerun a favorite
TV show or movie in my head and try
to see all the images in order that
I remember them.

The sheer effort of doing this is so
draining, that I usually fall asleep
within five or ten minutes.

Another trick that works for me is
to eat a piece of bread before bedtime.

The carbs make the brain produce
a happy hormone that calms your brain
and helps it deal with stress.

Think it's called seratonin.
Can't remember.

Pasta for dinner works too
and is better than a donut.

You could also try leg exercises
(i.e. pointing and flexing your toes
while in bed.)

Or elevating
your legs above your heart on a pillow.
This works at times, for me.

I get insominia lots, so I use multi-strategies
to deal with it.

Best of luck with your insomnia and the other
issues you are facing.

Your friends are here for you.

Be well.

Thanks for the tips. Yea I've dealt with this for years, you'd think I'd be used to it. LOL I've learned a new trick kind of like yours though. I start "decorating" a room in my mind. Paint, curtains, furniture etc. After awhile my mind is so focused on it that I doze off and the rest gets shuffled back.

I will try the wall painting idea.
That sounds like fun!
