You just baked some cupcakes and you are out of frosting!

I was reading a magazine yesterday and their was a tip for people with this problem. When the cupcakes are a few minutes from being done take them out and stick a big marshmallow on top of them and pop them back in the oven for a few minutes. The marshmallow will melt and make a gooey topping on the cupcakes. Do you have any tips for substitutions when you are out of what you need?

I love that idea! Perhaps a person could mix some instant cocoa and melted marshmellow for a chocolate topping. Never tried it. How about strawberry or blackberry jam or preserves on top of the cake or cupcake? It might be somewhat healthier than traditional icing.

The jam idea sound like a good one. If I was going to use jam though I think I would put it in before baking them. Put some batter on the bottom, a scoop of jam, and then more batter on top.

What a neat idea. I wouldn't have thought of that. My daughter and I ran out of tape once. So we used some medical tape from the 1st aid kit. It worked and she could color it.

This is a substition for something other than cooking, but I hope you will find it helpful anyway. My sister was telling me to get rid of a zit or pimple, to put honey on it before you go to bed. Just a dab of honey, and then cover it with a bandaid. It sounds a little extreme, but I guess the honey will draw out the bacteria and keep the zit/pimple from getting worse. I hate those pimples that seem to last for days. So next time I am going to have to give this a whirl and see if it works.
