Hello everyone! :) First I'm going to start by saying, I really love this movie. Even though it isn't really all about action, a lot of the movie is just talking...but i think it is really smart and entertaining. But what I'm wondering of how much of this movie (starring Richard Gere) is true? It's based on actual events, and I know the character portrayed by Gere was a real person. But how much of the details of the movie is true? ~Is that how his wife really died? ~Did a "Silver Bridge" in Point Pleasant really collapse, killing 36? ~Was there really a man in Point Pleasant that was told of upcoming disasters? ("don't be afraid, 99 will die). Anything else??

I tend to believe that movies "based on true story" are mostly true though my husband always tells me that they're usually mostly untrue..they take a lot of artistic license to make the movie more interesting etc.. I liked this movie also...I like pretty much any movie with Laura Linney...she's a great actress.

Yes, she was the cop in Mothman. I did see her in Emily Rose. It's been quite a while since I've seen either of those movies though. I really loved her in Truman Show (played Truman's wife) and You Can Count on Me (played Sammy) and in Kinsey. I can't wait to get the HBO miniseries John Adams on DVD. She plays Abigail Adams. I've heard it's very good.

I think you and your husband are both right =p Like Arson above you said, some seem to be based on just an idea (like random killing statistics for The Strangers.) But I just got a feeling that The Mothman Prophecies was actually based ON an event. I liked this movie because they DIDN'T put a ton of "artistic licensing" in it to make it more "Hollywood." lol. Laura Linney is the cop right? Yeah she's really entertaining, really pretty.

I meant to ask you if you saw The Exorsism of Emily Rose...Laura Linney is a lawyer in that movie, another great role :)

The bridge did collapse, but I don't know how much of the movie is true because I haven't seen it.

I understand that all the times the mothman was sighted in the movie were based on actual sightings of the creature. But I got that from watching shows about the mothman, don't know that I'd want to watch the movie - not really my cuppa tea.

That's intersting too know! I don't know what I'd do if I saw him! I'd probably freak out! =P lol. I would not do good with something like that in real life, the movie is bad enough! =)

What a terrible thing to happen! Whenever I see the end of it I get very tense, because whenever there is a distater like that in movies (real or fictional) with so many deaths....oh it's the worst for me! If you like movies like this (suspense/scary) you should defeniatly check it out! It's really good and interesting! :)

Based on true events generally means they could have taken any random thing and just say it was based on that. For example Texas Chainsaw Massacre never really happened but they say it is based on true events. It is based on Ed Gein who killed like 1 or two people and decorated his house with corpses he dug up, but he wasn't a chainsaw wielding maniac nor was there a whole family of them. Mothman Prophecies was a boring movie to me.

Yeah I know that when they say based on true events doesn't mean the story actually happened. Like the new The Strangers...I really think that was just a movie about all the random killings that happen so often...but with The Mothman Prophecies I got the feeling that the story was more fact than fiction. I can see how it would be boring to some people. A lot of people need a lot of the action and scares in their movies, but I really don't mind all the "talking" and non action parts in movies. Like the movie Rain Maker...loved it even though it was mostly all talk.

Now you've got me wanting to see this again! I remember really liking the movie but I can't remember all the details anymore, but I do recall hearing or reading that it was "based on true events" or however they said it. I love anything with Richard Gere, though. I'm afraid he's one of those who doesn't really have to do a thing to keep my attention for two hours. Annie

I believe most of the details surrounding that movie were true. In fact a bridge did collapose and several people were killed. I think some people were forewarned of the diasasters. Some people think the mothman was an indian god of some sort who could warn people of diasasters. I guess the one think I'm wondering about was if the mothman was a good character why did he kill a dog. Maybe it was an Indian curse for distrbing the burial gounds.

The mothman killed a dog in the movie? I don't remember?? Or are you not talking about in the movie? I think in the movie they started to say that the mothman is not an evil thing, like it seems...but not the friendlest thing either! lol.

Acually, this movie was based no true events. A bridge in this are did collapse and plunge people to their deaths (not sure of the year.) and the people of the area do believe in "Mothman." I don't know all the particulars..bit I also LOVED this movie!

Oh I know the movie was based on actual events! :) That's one of the reasons I wanted to see it when it came out to theaters! =P I was just curious about HOW much of it was true, because it is all amazing!

I saw a documentary before I went to go see the movie. And I wish that I hadn't. That movie had me paranoid for over a year, lol. I'm always aware of my surroundings and this movie made me more cautious. I do believe that there is a possibility of something sharing life with us that we can't see. I heard this was based on true events, but I don't know if they were actually true. But hey, who knows? However, the movie is pretty good. Creepy, but good.
