What OS are you using? |
|
I am dual-booting Vista Premium with Linux right now. With all the negative press about Vista I was wondering how many people out there are actually using it and with Linux actually being free (and a better OS) who is actually using that. If you are one that uses WinXP are you going to stay with it and is there anyone who has used Vista and went back to XP? Thanks Zelo

1. 1337speak (145) | 3 months ago | I tried vista, but went back to XP. The performance toll is just not worth it. I'm using older hardware. Like you, I also dual boot with linux (ubuntu). It's a shame but it seems I can't discard windows just yet for compatibility and interoperability reasons.

zeloguy (1976) | 3 months ago | It will be soon when you will be able to do so unless you are a hardcore gamer (which you should have a console anyway). But things like Word, Spreadsheet (Excel), etc... that need Windows are being overtaken by OpenOffice and eventually by the internet (Google has online tools just like office). Thanks for the response. Thanks Zelo

1337speak (145) | 3 months ago | Yep, that's still in the future. In the mean time, I just dualboot... Sometimes I use wine or virtualbox if I feel lazy rebooting.

2. oneandonemakesix (24167) | 3 months ago | Hey Zel I have several computers, my laptop is the only one that uses Vista, my desktops use XP, my husband us XP on his work laptop and then we have a couple of linux computers, One of my desktops is dual XP Unix boot, and I don't use that computer much, my husband does use more of it, me truthfully if I had a choice I would prefer to have a macbook and while a lot of sights are not mack friendly, I have to say that its harder to get viruses but much better for graphics and music. zeloguy (1976) | 3 months ago | Wow you MAY have more computer than do I. I updated to Vista but along with it had to go with a 64-bit version and 4gigs of RAM just to make it run without hiccuping. My other computers are XP except for one laptop that came preinstalled with Vista (2gig... runs ok if you turn sidebar off). Thanks Zelo

zeloguy (1976) | 3 months ago | That is a BIG thing with Windows... people are USED to it and that is the main reason people don't switch to Linux... not because of incompatibility or whatever but because it is just not familiar to them. Great answer Thanks Zelo

| 4. shadow7312 (22) | 3 months ago | Well I'm using XP. Have no interest to upgrade to Vista yet. Why not the little penguin? Though I'm not a programmer any more, I'm still using Visual Studio and SQL Server, both are the main reason I stay with Windows. I have no problem with Linux. I have a Red Hat installed on my home computer. I find out it's quite fun to play with command line, setting up this and that, start service this and that and horray! when it works. But in the office, I must say my team and I have no time to do trial and error experiment. We need something that can run as soon as possible, easy to maintain and further more: have an excellent-outstanding-very well organized knowledge base support so if we have problem, we know where we're heading to, and we know we will be able to find the answer in only 1-2 clicks on search button. I must say MS is outstanding here. You can't count on milist or forum as the answer may come in 1-2 days while we are desperately need it now. Sure there is Google but we won't waste our time examine the links one by one till we find what we are looking for. Ah, just my 2 cents.

zeloguy (1976) | 3 months ago | And you are trying to say that Linux is less stable and harder to diagnose any problems it may have than windows.... whoosh that is going out there on a limb. I can understand that you want to stick with Windows because of VS and SQL Server (neither I'd personally use) but to say that Windows is more stable than Linux is ...... your own opinion I guess. Thanks for your 2 cents. Zelo

zeloguy (1976) | 3 months ago | Why do you NEED to have Windows? Is it just because you are unfamiliar with thet OS or that you are a programmer that has to use it for Windows-only features or?.... For a 7" laptop I see no need why you would NEED to have Windows. Thanks Zelo

6. nerdy_marc (125) | 3 months ago | Macintosh OSX Leopard user here...For me the best OS in the market today. If your planning to switch on operating system I suggest your try Macintosh. When I first step into the mac world last year I was really afraid because I might not maximize its use. Now, a year later I may say, can't live without my mac, it really becomes part of my everyday life. As an old mac saying goes, "Once you go with mac, you wont come back".

7. pikeshpd (137) | 3 months ago | Well, I have two PC. In First one PC i use only XP because this one make us very reliable to use among the family. And second one has the dual-boot config. that make me reliable to use it. Because no one know how to use the Linux. and I mostly use Linux.....

zeloguy (1976) | 3 months ago | Well that makes sense to have a dual-boot. The thing that gets me when I hear people say they don't know how to use Linux is most of them are just surfing the net and there is a Linux version of Firefox out there... it is the exact same thing... it is like saying you don't know how to drive your neighbors car. The engine might be different but the steering wheel and pedals are the same. Thanks Zelo

8. dynaweb (122) | 3 months ago | I am using XP now and I am satisfied with it. I have learned all the quirks and ins-and-outs. If I get a new computer system cheap and it comes with Vista (like my laptop did) then I will use Vista. I really do not see any advantage of Vista over XP. Even the little things that are neat about Vista (enhanced start menu and sidebar) can easily be plugins to XP. I still have a desktop system with XP and Linux (Simply Mepis) dual-boot environment. I am a Web Developer and thus need to stay on top of Linux operations. Is a dual-boot environment recommended for non-developers or those less "tech savvy"? It is hard to say. Just give it a try and see how it goes. http://www.wormportal.com... http://www.linuxboards.org/showthread.php?t=2424

zeloguy (1976) | 3 months ago | I really like Mepis and as long as Aero is off or you have 3-4 gig of Ram I can put up with Vista... other than that I use XP. Thanks Zelo

9. m0mmy0f03 (174) | 3 months ago | I had vista and it came with my new laptop and I hate it!!! I have had my laptop for about a 1 year and have had to restore it about 5 times. I wish I had xp I loved it.

zeloguy (1976) | 3 months ago | Yeah I think a lot of people are in the same boat especially if they only have 1gig of ram on their system or 2gig trying to run Aero. Microsoft is working hard to bring out a new operating system in 2010. This (Vista) looks like another flop just like Windows2000. Thanks Zelo

| 10. Ramiel112 (2) | 3 months ago | im dual booting with OpenSUSE 10.3 and Windows XP, i think that more people use windows because of the fact that windows comes with most laptops and pc`s and if u remove windows it voids the warranty and also there arent alot of people who know about linux. I Havent used vista yet because it sucks!! Regards Ramiel

| bluespace (93) | 2 months ago | I would stay away from Linspire they just got bought out by Xandros.Who knows if they will keep it or cancel it. I was with Freespire a year ago and I never regretted leaving. It was so out of date and so many things about Linspire were negative that really I'm not surprised they've gone downhill and I don't care if it goes away completely. Linux Mint KDE is the way to go my friends!
