Have you been told what to buy for a child for their birthday and did you do it?

We had a family birthday coming up. The parent of this child actually told us what they would expecting for the child wanted and that they only want clothes and it has to be from this specific place. Well it is one of those expensive places that you can't get out of there for under $50 for a shirt. I thought that was rude. What would you have done - bought a pair of socks? Bought a gift certificate to the place? Overspent on an outfit?

my aunt is just like that, she always wanted a certain brand of clothing or a certain toy. so i just either bought a gift certificate or i just bought what i wanted and i told her if she had a problem with it then i could just take it back and get my money back. i dont like people like that how are you gonna tell someone how to spend their own money.and at the same time she is ruining my little cousin becuase now she tend to mention that she cant weat a certain item or play with a certain doll.im just like well i just wont buy her anything.

I have been asked by someone to not buy toys for their child because frankly the kid has too many toys already. I was not however told what store I need to buy something at. I would just as soon not buy a present at all than to be told pretty much exactly what to buy for the child.
