I found this article about a German Nursing home "playing a trick" on their patients so they don't wander off.

They have set up a replica of a bus stop out in front of the nursing home. Patients trying to leave to go home will stand and wait there rather than trying to walk home and getting confused.

That is rather intelligent of those nursing home people happy Better to have them waiting for a non-existant bus than simply wandering off and getting lost!

I am not sure if I should laugh or cry after reading this. I am scheduled for an Alzheimer's examination in August and hope no one has to do this to me. I am also reminded of reading about a small town that didn't have the money for another police cruiser to monitor speeding from out-of-towners, so they built a mock cruiser and posted it where it could be seen by travelers. It cut down on the speeding vehicles coming into their town. Go figure!

I hope your examination goes well!

I think thats neat about the cruiser I wonder where its at! People seem to be easily deceived in that respect

LOL that's strange, because a danish nursing home did this about a year ago - either the writer of the articles got germany and denmark mixed up, or maybe the germans just got inspired:D

Oh neat! It could be a case that they read the article about the other and decided it was a good idea

That's one way of keeping them in a good place. I worked at a nursing home once that had a code o get out. I punched out, and one of the dementia residets followed me. I had to catch her, and call the home on my cellphone to come and get her.

That would be scary!

I know the nursing home in town has a few patients that used to wander. They have them wear bracelets with sensors in so the doors lock when they go near them.

Such a innovative way to solve this problem! This people should be commended for doing this and lessen the problem on wandering patients.

The first home that my mother was in could have done with doing this, she was always wandering off, she would catch the bus outside and if the driver knew her he would go round the block and drop her off, but sometimes this wasn't possible and she would end up miles away, either we would find her or she would be brought back by the police, it was such a worrying time.

It is a good idea,

It would be very stressful trying to find patients when they wander off.

That is such a great idea! My grandmother had Alzheimer's, and I wish the nursing home where she stayed would have done this. Talk about creative!

That sounds like a good idea to keep the patients from trying to walk home and getting confused and lost, even though it is kind of mean to set up a fake bus stop to get the patients to stand there like they are waiting for a bus, because it is deceiving them, and you think the staff at the nursing home would want to be honest with their patients.

I don't know what to think about this. On one hand it is important to prevent people from wandering off. I have worked at a nursing home myself, and I know from experience that many Alzheimer patients put themselves at risk by wandering off. On the other hand I don't think that a replica of a busstop is the right solution. Many people would say that the end justifies the means, but I don't like the idea of fooling the patients into thinking that the busstop is real. I think it is degrading.

My grandmother is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and I am happy that they don't use this trick at her nursing home. They do prevent the patients from wandering off but they don't play tricks on them.
