inhumane humans

An odd juxtaposition just occurred on the evening news. There was a story on the need for donations to the animal shelter because the airconditioner is in need of replacement and it's as hot as 85 degrees in there, even though they put a fan in front of each cage. The anchor said the temp. meter in his car said 104, even though he'd parked under a tree. Inmates in Florida's prisons have no air conditioning, even in those buildings that have little metal grates with tiny holes in them instead of windows. Most buildings have 2 or 3 ceiling fans, but they seldom work. OK, some of you will jump on this and say they deserve to suffer. The fact is, they are sentenced to be removed from society. It is illegal to make them suffer, although it's done every day.
Humane treatment for stray animals? YES!
Humane treatment for people? WHY NOT?

Well, prisons are run by governments and funded by taxes but animal shelters are privately owned and funded by public donations. It's hardly the same thing. Governments tend to have "education, social welfare, national security etc" on their budget list. Animal shelters have "pay staff, pay feed for animals, overheads, get aircon fixed"
Their priorities are different. And while an animal shelter can just ask for public donations on television, any government which raises taxes for whatever reason, no matter how legitimate is going to expect a lot of public outcry.

You're absolutely right! I was shocked when I first heard that these people live in temperatures as high as 130F! That's inhumane, no matter what they've done. Thank you for the response.

It's not a case of eithr one or the other. The inmates were sentenced to be kept out of society. It violates not only the letter of the law but certainly its spirit to torture anyone. We don't have to deny the animals comfort, but it shouldn't be denied any human, either.
Thank you for the response.
