I use the King James Version of the bible. But,sometimes it is hard to understand when Iam not reaading at church and the pastor is telling us what it means.I then will read it in the NIV Rainbow bible version and compare it to the same verses in the KJV.What version do you read?

I use the KJV myself also. I guess because I was raised since childhood to use it but there are times when some preachers that I have had in the past use The NIV. I prefer the KJV myself.

I have always used the KJV also, but unless Iam at church for the pastor to explain what the text means then I read the NIV Rainbow and copare the verses to each other.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Shaun72 (11980)   ranked 202 out of 1,673 in the bible  4 years ago

That is very understandable. There are some words and verses that are hard to understand in The KJV. I have had to have them explained to me also before.

I have an NIV bible which I read every morning in our house. I feel comfortable with this version and could relate and understand it's translation. I also keep within reach a bible dictionary in case there are matters which I could not fully understand.

I use the King James Version but i use to have the same problem, then i got one that is in plain language and then i understood..Now after all these years i can pretty well understand the King James version ...I have Never been able to understand much of the book of Reveolation though...I just take what the pastor says for granted about that book...

myLot reputation of 93/100. dfollin (2650)   ranked 56 out of 1,673 in the bible  4 years ago

A lot of times I have even called my pastor up and asked him what something means.

sharky05 (48)  4 years ago

I enjoy the NLT at the moment (New living translation - similar to NIV but more recent). Personally other than personal taste I don't understand why KJV is so commonly used still - surely our understanding of the idioms in the original Hebrew and Greek have improved since a few hundred years ago, and seeing as we are not reading it in our original language we may as well translate the scriptures into a modern form of our language for the best understanding, not a way of speaking which isn't used today.

The aim of the KJV was to take the inaccessible latin and bring it into plain english so anyone of those times could understand it even without an education. Surely we should continue in it's aim by widely using a translation in today's plain english so any young person can understand this easily even if they haven't come from a church background and grown up with KJV?

I'm like you, I read and compare. The NKJV is what I read the most thou.

sharky05 (48)  4 years ago

Is the "thou" a typo or do you also speak like the KJV? :D

As long as people are understanding God's word, that's what's important.

myLot reputation of 87/100. kittenmc (359)   ranked 809 out of 1,673 in the bible  4 years ago

Yes, "thou" is a typo. I'm not sure what word I was going use there.
Yes, you are right. As long as we can understand God's word, that's what matters.

The bible I own is a New American Bible. The school I go to recommends this version of the Bible because it is easier to read and understand. The terms used are not in old English form. Actually, I find this version really easier to read. But still, the message the bible conveys doesn't alter even versions vary. :D

In my daughter's Sunday school they had the same bible, because it is easier for the kids to understand(adults too!).A knew youth pastor came to the church and made them get rid of them and only use KJV.Now,he is gone,so I guess they went back to their previous bible.

I read the King James version and I use the King James when I study the bible but I have couple of the other versions for comparison when I don't fully get an understanding because the words are in different translations and in some verses have different meanings. I also have a bible dictionary and commentary to help with my understanding.

myLot reputation of 93/100. dfollin (2650)   ranked 56 out of 1,673 in the bible  4 years ago

I read the NIV Woman's edition. I really do not like the King James. Maybe it's to old fashion for me, plus the Biblethat I have use to belong to my aunt who is a minister, so it's filled with her notes and add ons. It also have quick notes in the front and back if you are looking for something it makes it really fast.

myLot reputation of 93/100. dfollin (2650)   ranked 56 out of 1,673 in the bible  4 years ago

I have an NIV Womens edition. The secretary of the church, which is a friend and a member at the church suggested the NIV Rainbow bible. She said that her and the pastors wife both us them.I saw it and really liked it.That Christmas she and the church gave me one.

myLot reputation of 81/100. ZephyrSun (3727)   ranked 574 out of 1,673 in the bible  4 years ago

That's so nice of them to do. Bibles are so expensive considering you can get one for free if you stay the night in a hotel lol.

myLot reputation of 93/100. dfollin (2650)   ranked 56 out of 1,673 in the bible  4 years ago

lolTisk,tisk,stealing a bible.lol

Our church give's people bible's,which I think is good. They give the KJV bible to anyone who comes to the church, even the first time.We may never see them again. But,God know's that we gave then His word. Our church also takes up collections and give to Gideon, which is the place that put's those bible's in the hotels. So,I guess you didn't actually steal itlol Besides that you cannot steal God's word.He gave it to us freely!

myLot reputation of 81/100. ZephyrSun (3727)   ranked 574 out of 1,673 in the bible  4 years ago

lol Very true! That's good that your church gives them away. I have never gotten a Bible from church, but maybe when your family is the minister, preacher or whichever they don't give you anything like that because they realize you probably have tons of them lol

myLot reputation of 93/100. dfollin (2650)   ranked 56 out of 1,673 in the bible  4 years ago

My pastor realizes not everyone can afford to buy one, they are not cheap. No one should sell them making a profit off God's word! Our church buys them in bulk and will give one to anybody who doesn't have one.I have not seen a large church do that.He also knows that there are some people out there that were not even raised knowing what a bible is and would not even know where to go and buy one.I have seen people like that.

I also prefer the KJV. Part of the reason I prefer it is because I grew up with it. I also somehow think it's important that I do think about what I'm reading when I read the Bible, and reading it in the KJV requires some thought. I will, however, read the NIV if I really want to clear something up.

myLot reputation of 93/100. dfollin (2650)   ranked 56 out of 1,673 in the bible  4 years ago

Your right it is important and does take a lot of thought. That's why I use the NIV Rainbow to compare.

I use the New King James, because of what you said that the King James and his old english is a little hard to read. My pastor uses the Amplify and I think I will start using it to for church, but still study the Bible in the NKJ. I do not have a problem with any translation of the Bible like some do. Here is my issue with the debate over the KJV only, is that the Bible was writen in Hebrew and Greek and then translated into others. I think as long as the version matchs what the true writen Word of God then it should not matter what the transation is.
