Another hair mishap

I was with my nieces yesterday when they were getting their haircut at Walmart. As I sat there waiting for them, I couldn't help seeing my hair in all the mirrors on the walls. My hair looked so yellow, almost pale lemon. I was not amused. Since we were at Walmart, I had my sister help me pick a hair color. It was Medium Blonde. Last night I did it and left it on a smidge longer since the box said I could for stubborn grays. I have no gray, but my hair just doesn't hold color at all. Anyway, my hair is no longer lemony, but appears bluish-gray to me. My husband says it's not. I can't wait to take my shower and wash my hair tonight to see if some of the excess washes out. It has been so hard not to just hop in the shower and wash it. But I know I stand a better chance of not reverting to being a lemonhead if I wait the 24 hours as suggested before washing. If my hair does stay blue-gray, any suggestions on fixing it besides getting another box of colorant to apply?

Bluish grey? That's cool! You a punk music fan? Okay, seriously, I agree you may not want to go to work looking like that. Why don't you colour it something darker like brown (might be hard to see - blonde to brown all of a sudden). Just do something to make it look less blue.

It has actually already washed out most of the way. My hair just won't hold color, no matter what kind.

Sorry but I know very little about hair care from this angle! From the limited knowledge I DO have I am pretty sure that if you were to immediately look to recolour it then you run the risk of damaging your hair because these treatments are pretty harsh. And on the odd occasion that I DID colour my hair when I was younger, the colour AFTER washing was always different to the colour beforehand so hopefully your theory regarding the 24 hour wait scenario will give you the result you want so you can relax! Let us know how it all pans out. Good luck!

It did come out the nice soft blonde that I hoped for! I am so relieved. I didn't relish going to work with blue hair.

I sure hope your hair turns out right for you. that sounds about like my luck. I have never used any dye on my hair yet. I have black hair and a gray hair every now and then that I pluck out. I'm not sure what else you could do for your hair to make it turn out right other than trying to dye it again.

I kind of have a tip but it's more of a last resort...dishwasher detergent will strip away fresh color. I had the exact same thing happen to me, it's the "ash" in cooler shades that causes that bluish gray color when put on warmer blond shades. A professional hair dresser told me to mix a paste of dishwasher detergent and water and apply it to my hair. For me, it didn't entirely remove the bluish gray but it was much less noticeable. The problem is, the detergent is also very harsh so you'll need to be prepared to do lots of conditioning and probably a hot oil treatment or two afterward...and then see a professional if you want it colored again. According to the hairdresser, coloring it at home would probably have even worse results until you can grow it out enough to cut off the damaged hair.

I just washed it and it seems less ashy than before. I am hopeful for when it dries it will be a soft medium blonde. If it is still too blue, I will try the dish detergent and pray. Thanks for the response.
