how much does a loaf of bread cost where you are?

not so long ago, I could buy a basic sliced loaf for about 23pence (800g). I did get one for 39p this week but usually the cheapest is now 65p ... this is for supermarket 'ownlabel'. The branded sliced bread is now on 'special offer' at 2 for £2. I realise that its increased with the rise in flour prices but I'm curious to see how UK prices compare with other parts of the world on this.

Its impossible for me to compare prices of UK with Pakistan. The consumables here in Pakistan have rised three times over the period of last one an half year only. The flour price has increased dramatically and flour is not available to people here too. There is shortage in local market. The main problem is stockists stocking all available flour, making a shortage, increasing the price and then selling it in the same market. What a disrespectful people they are. Now what else can be said about them, I know in Europe, USA and other countries, in days of Xmas, everything is on sale but here the picture is different. I just hate my whole nation for this.

Yes, we all realise that manufacturers and retailers are in business to make profits but there is a difference between making an honest profit and profiteering!

At our local grocery store, the cheapest lof of bread is $0.79. I've never bought that kind but I know quite a few people who seem to like it just fine. I used to think that I had to buy the best and highest priced bread, but not anymore. I can't (and won't) spend $3.00 on one loaf of bread. I'm down to buying the bread that costs $1.39. I like it, although it's not as soft as other breads.

When I have time, I prefer to bake my own - but it gets eaten quicker!

If I buy the WalMart brand of wheat bread, I think it is something like $1.34, the name brands of course are might higher, usually $1.89 or more. If I can find it at Aldi's (discount grocery store), I believe it is only $ .99 there, so I buy several loaves and freeze them. Once you thaw bread, it is just as fresh as when you picked it up at the store.

Last time I went to our branch of Aldi's the price was about the same as in yours.

Yeah I think the cheapest locally is in the Co-Op at 50-something pence. In Asda though I think it's about 65p. My favourite bread is from Warburtons but it's nearly £1.20 a loaf! It's shocking how much food costs at the moment.
