My 2 year old still isnt talking. |
|
We have had his hearing checked and they say everything is ok, but he still hasnt started talking. He only says uuhh and points at things and occasionally says MaMa. My other children started talking at about 18 months. I was just wondering if there was anything thing that I could do to make him start talking? Thanks in advance!

RDugas (155) | 5 months ago | Im not really worried that he's not talking. I know he can hear. He comes running full speed from his room if he hears a chip bag or candy paper being opened in the kitchen. Just wondering if there was something I could do to get him to start talking.

2. teka44 (2171) | 5 months ago | Hi RDugas. I really don't know what it can be but my advise would be you go to the doctor to make a check up in the phonetic sistem. Many years ago I known a woman that her son with 3 old couldn't talk and only made sounds. The doctor discovered that he had a bridle on the tongue and the doctor cut this bridle that is under the tongue so he begun to talk. Maybe can be it I don't know but if I would be you I will take him to the doctor, the early you go will be better to him. Cheers and good luck.

3. cookie1971 (1542) | 5 months ago | I have had a friend who had a child that hardly talked before starting school. I said to her not to worry about him because he will talk in the first year of school. Now the child is almost 11 years old and can't stop him from talking. I think it is because of when the teachers were teaching him how to read and write. In the mean time, repeat all the words that your child says and any frequent words that you use. In time, your child will start to talk but if it does concern you that your child isn't talking, then seek professional help from the doctor. Remember, every child is differnt and will develop differently. But if your child has no health problems, maybe your child is more of an observer than a talker at an early age. Your child is watching everything that goes on around him.

4. subtlesubmissive (592) | 5 months ago | My daughter turned three in March and has only recently started saying words such as: Mommy, Daddy, kitty cat... Hi,puppy... icy cold, excellent, uh oh and 'ooooffff, sorry'! My mother (who has had thirteen children throughout her life), told me not to worry about my daughter because all children progress at different stages... we are not to compare our children to others, some are ahead of others when it comes to speaking, potty training, walking or climbing. Like my mother said, when she was a young mother (40+ years ago), there were no doctors comparing children to a chart or to one another! Thank goodness mom made this apparent to me, I was really starting to be bothered that my little one seemed to be progressing slowly. They are unique in who they are, but they are also uniques in what they do!!

| 5. coolblu (13) | 5 months ago | I understand what your going through. My son was almost 3 years old when he started talking but we had to learn sign language to understand him what he wanted.. The best thing to get your son to start talking get a word book and start saying them and make him say them as well everyday. Then use books with 1 to 2 word sentences as well that seems to help. There is one other thing you could do as well if you wanted to. Look up the simple word in sign language and use them with your son everyday and say the words so he knows what they are.. words like eat, drink, cookie, crackers, play, nap if he still takes them.. I hope this helps you some.. I just went through it my daughter as well and she'll be 3 next months.

6. mjhicks (102) | 5 months ago | My son also didn't talk much till almost three. I have two children and he is the younger. Boys naturally are not "talkers" When compared to girls of similar age, girls develop language and vocabulary much faster then boys. When girls play together they Talk and chatter playing house, tea party, dolls etc they will chatter and roll play. Boys make grunting, bang, zoom, sounds etc associated with playing hotwheels, war, alien attack etc. It is natural brain "wiring". I've noticed that a child born second, third, or more in line often doesn't talk as quickly if an older sibling verbalizes their wants for them. I have a friend who says he didn't talk much till he was 4 years old because his older sister did all his talking for him. If there is no medical reason or signs of true developmental delay then just keep encouraging him to talk. "See n Say" type of toys or "teddy bears" that record what you say and play it back are great at encouraging verbal skills. Enjoy this time... once he starts talking you'll spend the next decade and then some trying to get him to stop. lol.

7. alori61 (232) | 5 months ago | My oldest daughter didn't start talking till she was almost 4. She had was a strange child she never did anything till she knew she could do it then it was like she'd been doing it all her life. She did it with sitting up, walking, crawling, talking, reading everything. Once she started talking she has made up for lost time. Some kids are just like that. Until she learned to talk we used simple sign language so she screamed less, you can get a book from the library. We learned eat, drink, more, stop, love, yes, wait, sleepy stuff like that simple to teach and simple for her to learn.

RDugas (155) | 5 months ago | I definitly will be checking out that sign language idea. I already know how to say some things in sign language. I'll have to check the library for a book. Thanks.

8. shintongs23 (393) | 5 months ago | I am still single and never had a child yet. But I am a godfather to many children and I usually encountered a 2 year old child not talking yet. Although it's not typical, you don't have to worry, either. Based on what I learned as a Psychology student, some children are more cautious and reserved, and they wait until they understand a great deal of what they heard before actually saying it. Since you mentioned that he is pointing at certain objects, it is a good sign for him. Pointing to a toy he wants or to a picture in a book is closely related to the beginning of actual speech. This is one of the gauge to measure a child's readiness for language. Other signs to consider are the following: *Does he seem to understand what you say? Does he react when you call his name even you are out from his sight? *Does your child use gestures and facial expressions to communicate? *Does your child grunts? If your child doesn't show this sign of readiness, then you have to make an appointment for a speech or hearing screening. Talk with his pediatrician. Or consult a hearing and speech specialist. Many language problems can be treated effectively during preschool years. Hope I answered your question. God Bless!

9. pradysgirl (217) | 5 months ago | My son is four years now, still I cannot make out what he is talking, he started taking at the age of 3 yrs, till that time only we could make out 3 of his words, papa, amma and akka(for sister). we were literally using sign language to know what he is talking about!! later when he got into play school he started speaking some meaningful words. so the more he interacts with kids he will speak early, since we are a nucleus family, with only myself and husband talking to him, hard for him to pick up . so try taking him out to parks . it might work if he finds friends of his age group. bye:)
