Last year, my husband and I flew out to California from Orlando to visit my son. After our visit we took the train back up through Oregon. Seattle Montana and all the other states across to Chicago and down. It was a six day trip and we saw some of the most beautiful places our Country has to offer. We got one of the bedrooms with it's own shower. It was sooo much fun. I loved roaming back and forth through the train. Every afternoon there was a wine tasting in the dining car. You didn't have a choice where you wanted to sit so we made friends with just about everyone in the sleep cars. Of course it was more expensive than just having a seat, but in my opinion it's the only way to go. The Stewards came and made your beds every morning and pull down your beds every night. They pretty much waited on you hand and foot. If you've never been on a train before, it's such a great adventure!! I just hope I have an opportunity to go on a train trip again some day. Does anyone have a train adventure to share?

When I was a little girl the train track was right across the street from our house. My brother and his friend one time gave me bottle caps that were flattened on the train track and told me it was money. I was to go to the store/restaurant next to our house to buy pop and chips for them. Of course the store owner was not having it telling me it was not money and I began to cry and say yes it is my brother told me so. I admitted to the story owner I had never seen money like that before either but it must be money because my brother told me so. The store owner explained what my brother and his friend did and told me I am going to let you pick some candy just for you but you can not share them with your brother.
I did travel on train once when I was younger but I really don't remember to much about it except eating to many of my mothers mints until I was sick. I also remember starring out the window and being amazed at all the empty land I was seeing and oh yaw being afraid the train would love of the side of the mountain.
I love trains. When we end up in our car waiting for a train to pass I am so happy to watch and wait. My husband on the other hand is oh drat’s why did we come this way or why did we leave earlier so we could of avoided this thing. I say oh enjoy it, count the boxes and wave to the engineer! :)
We had dinner with a couple this summer that traveled from the East to the West on train through the Rockies. They said it was such a lovely time and well worth the money.
Have you ever thought about visiting Canada by Train?

Hi again Coffee,
Brothers can be so mischievious. I have six brothers and fortunately they were too busy pulling stunts on each other rather then to me or my twin sister and older sister.
When we were very young, my Grandmother took me and my twin for a ride on the train to the next town over to see our Great Grandmother. Like you, I don't remember a lot but do remember how bumpy it was. I remember loving the adventure.
So when hubby and I took our trip across Country, we had the time of our lives. I hope you are able to take a trip on the rails that you will never forget. I would really love to take the train to Canada. If that opportunity ever arises I'll let you know. Maybe we''l have a chance to meet. Take care.

I've been on trains, but never fancy like that. On my honeymoon we traveled through Europe with Eurail passes and Youth Hostel passes. We got to Germany after spending some time in the UK and the only hotel room we could find was too expensive. Not sure about the youth hostel. Anyway we got back on the train and headed to Denmark. They actually load the train on a ferry to cross some water on the way to Copenhagen, though I missed it on the way up (was sleeping). I guess I could think of a lot of European train stories if I put my mind to it.

Hey Dawn Baby!!
I'm sorry I missed your post here. I came here because another new friend came here to respond as well.
Your train adventure sounds quite exciting. Especially the ferry crossing. What I love about the train is that you can enjoy so much more of the Country side then in a car, or flying. The freedom to walk through the train and explore it was also exciting for me. I hope so much that I have another chance to experience the train again. Hugsss

Hi Leenie... There. I can see you now. hmmm... I've never been on a train ride. It's something that I would love to try. (I just hope it doesn't make me sick in the stomach as I have problems with motion sickness.) Sounds like a lot of fun.
Did you get any pictures from your train trip?

Hi rose
The train is really exciting to me. You might try a very short trip say from one town to the next. If you find that you are getting sick just get off at the next stop and have someone ready to come get you. At any rate, I hope you get a chance to take a train ride, it is so fun!!

Hi Che,
If you can somehow, it will be an experience worth doing. Think about it, if we drive a long distance the money it will cost for gas. If it's a couple days trip a motel room, not to mention food. So just take a short trip, maybe a few hours away. Start there and maybe a longer trip next time. Even short trips are fun. I really hope you get a chance che, it's something worth doing.Hugssssss

Hey bunny,
Thanks for dropping in. You need to read above what I wrote to Plunk. You really need to treat yourself to a train trip. If you have a special place you'd like to see, then start planning a train trip with a sleeper car. You won't bee sorry. It is so much fun.xoxoxo

Shell,
I hope you do take the train. Make sure you get a sleep car. You'll need it to be comfortable. It is so much more fun than an airplane. You can get up and walk around. Of course you'll have to be very careful on the moving train. The experience is worth it.

Hi Vanities
When I lived in Ca. my twin and her husband came out for a visit and decided they wanted to try taking the train to see someone they knew in San Diego. It was a short trip but they loved it. Maybe one of these days you will be some place that you can do a train trip. You'll have the time of your life. Thanks for your response and don't give up your dreams.

Wow! sounds like you were spoiled rotten.
My friend owns and operates a business out of a caboose. Her husband is a volunteer conductor for a scenic railroad non-profit tour in the Adirondacks. He bought the caboose. It sits next real working railroad tracks. Their home is an old train depot building. The warehouse next door has a community room for religious events and the rest of it is his workshop. She has her shop/business on the web, but not her house or the community room.
We went on train trips as a class on the really hot days of school end. Our teachers in Elementary School would always try to get us a good trip and a good deal on it. I think it cost $2 for the day when I was little. That was my first train ride. I've been on the Adirondack train, too. I want to go to the train, play and then back on the train for the Westport Theater run, but I haven't been yet. Need time and money and I have one or the other, but this year, I've also had neither. Take care

I went on a Cruise of the inside passage of Alaska with my Mom. I had my trip of my lifetime.
How did you know your husband was'going to loose his job? They have a crystal ball? If everyone was that psychic, 55 to 57% of people wouldn't be having their homes forclosed. Banks wouldn't need to be bailed out. People would have had lots of $ in their homes when their banks temporarily froze everything, etc. Take care

Hi again,
thanks for responding to my post. We really did spoil ourselves on that trip. One month later my husband was laid off and is still out of work over a year later.
People say we shouldn't have spent so much money on our trip. Those are my judgemental family members. I say, I'm sure happy we had the chance when we had the money. Those kind of experience come once in a life time, if they come at all. I'm afraid that was our trip of a life time.
So when you have a chance, go for it. You won't be sorry. I have lower back and leg problems but I would jump at the chance to do it again.

I have never been on a train journey across country as have only used local trains to get from places within the same town.
I think if I had the chance(and the money!)I would love to travel on the Orient Express - in fact I would love to travel on both so the one from London to Paris and then the one across asia!

If you ever get the chance to do any train trip, you won't be sorry. It is a great adventure, no matter where you go. When we had the opportunity, we took it and I'm so glad because now all I can do is pray we get the oppurtunity to do it again. Thanks for your responce.

Hi Leenie!
I don't have any specific train trip to share with you but I can say that I have traveled on trains many times and I love them also. It is so nice when you have a long trip to get bedrooms, as like you say, they wait on you hand and foot and of course you are nicely rested for enjoying your trip and the countryside that you see. I can not imagine sitting in a seat for 6 days, that would be pure torture!
On second thought! I did have one very nice train trip through Mexico one year on vacation, and for just a small amount of money we were treated very luxuriously. Of course that had to do with the economy, the U.S. economy was going strong and the peso was very low. And while most people on the train had to travel in the economy class, 1 seat, when you could afford the first class it was first class all the way! ;)
