Why do we need to conform with the norm?

Haha! This topic is a daily conversation between my husband and I. I like to blend in the crowd and not make much of a scene anywere (translation - conform to the norm). I don't know why I prefer it that way, but I just want to fit in with everyone else and not have any extra attention drawn to me. My husband on the other hand states that he does not want to be normal because he is exceptional. (yes, he is exceptional but that is beyond the point here.) He has no qualms about making a scene in public or acting strange as long as he isn't hurting anything. He has a lot of strange quarks about himself and is not afraid to express them. I know that sometimes I try to control him about this, especially in public as I don't want any extra attention, but he takes this in stride (really he is a saint!). He is right about one thing, he says that I'd be bored if he was "normal" and he's probably right!

Haha that reminds me of my ex. I am not really the type to argue with the driver because he didn't give me enough change. I'd just let the driver have the rest of the money if he has such a problem with giving me the exact change. He and I ran into situations like that often and he would assert himself. I'm more of the conformist type, i.e., "let's not argue with this anymore, let's give him what he wants" to avoid trouble.
Rules are there for a reason so we all can get along and this can benefit us too. But I know there are exceptions.
