Would you pay say $20 more to make your flight carbon neutral? | | I was in an interesting discussion today with someone who works in a carbon trading company-come-consultancy. Apparently expedia, one of the UK online travel agencies, has introduced an option for people who buy their tickets online to reduce their carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits such that their portion of the flight is made carbon neutral. this decision and payment is routed to the carbon trading company, which then issues a carbon neutral certificate to the traveller. what the company then does with the money, is to channel it into various green projects, such as wind turbines in India, or recycling methane in China. Such projects reduce the amount of carbon that would otherwise have been used in these other parts of the world. the money goes into building wind turbines, or solar panels, that the people in these countries would otherwise not be able to afford to build. I found this quite an interesting concept, and a good way for each person to contribute in a small way to making the environment more 'green'. Would you participate if you had a chance?

This is a very laudable effort therefore, on the part of the travel agency. I too would purchase a ticket from such a company, even though it would mean paying a little for the ticket, though extra payment is not the question with this company. But I have recently come across a similar venture in my country, where we could buy tickets (in real-time) for a faster 'darshan' (going into the sanctum sanctorum of a Hindu temple), and the money was to be donated for setting up a Solar heater on the roof of the 'Dharmashala' (a nearby building where Devotees can stay for a few days), for providing hot water for a bath. I appreciated it, ofcourse and purchased the ticket!
