We just got a new puppy! Any advice?  email this discussion to a friend?

Last night we brought home Daisy, our new little yellow labrador retriever puppy. We haven't had a puppy in a very long time, and never had a puppy that will be a mostly indoor dog. (Our previous dogs were acquired as adults, already well trained.) We also have two indoor cats, who will adjust I am sure, though they're a bit put out right now.

So, what's your best advice regarding new puppies, especially large breed puppies like our little Daisy?

Get a book on How to train a dog/puppy.
I did and it was the best move I ever made, the techniques are so simple and work so well. Especially if it's an inside dog, it is important to have it properly trained, you'll be happy and so will your puppy.

That sounds like a good idea. Any particular book that you recommend?

I got 'the Perfect Dog' from the library, but recently I looked for it on Amazon and couldn't find it. It was a woman author.
Sorry, that's all I remember.
Just browse around, I'm sure you'll find one right for you.

I finally got my puppy trained so I will tell you what worked for me. First thing get a crate to keep your puppy whenever you go to sleep or you go out. Thats the first thing you will need. Do not put the puppy in there when he has an accident as a form of punishment. This is supposed to be some place where they wont be afraid to go into. Next walk your puppy as much as you can & most importantly do not leave the food dishes down all day. Leave down long enough for your puppy to eat then pick them up. Wait an hour or two & put them back down & repeat until around 5 p.m. then pick them up for the night. Always make sure you praise & give treats to your puppy whenever they do business outside. If the puppy has an accident do not hit or yell at them, but say no in a firm voice & immediately take them outside to show them thats where they are to do their business. If you have any other questions I would be more then happy to help you. Congratulations on your new pup.

You sound like a voice of experience! My son and daughter-in-law are bringing us a crate from their dog, who outgrew it, so we certainly plan on using that. I do hope to do a lot of walking with the dog, which was one of my arguments for getting her - I need the exercise, too! How soon did you start with a collar and leash? I'll remember the advice about the food, too. We have cats who, of course, have their food available all the time, but I know it's different for dogs but I had forgotten. Thanks for the tips, I really appreciate your input!
