Comparing prices |
|
We've had a lot of discussions regarding the rising food prices. Let's see how the prices differ in the various parts of the country. I shopped last Thursday and paid $4.75 for a gallon of Land O Lakes milk, $1.89 for a loaf of store-brand wheat bread, $1.57 for a pound of store-brand stick margarine and $5.99 for a 24 pack of Diet Pepsi. What are you paying for like items in your area?

For example, gas in the US is up to something like $4 a gallon, whereas here in Canada it got as high as $1.50 a litre. Both are high but look so very different. (Thankfully gas prices have started to drop). We buy milk in 4 Litre bags. It costs us about $4.79, depending on where you buy it. I bought it for $2.99 at a pharmacy store a couple of weeks ago. I also don't buy Land O Lakes but it was a brand name milk (Beatrice for one). I don't buy margarine in a stick but in a tub and I don't buy pop. I can't remember that last time I bought store brand bread, and I don't usually get whole wheat. I myself have to eat whole wheat but I eat English Muffins (whole wheat) and not bread. A medium sized tub of Becel margarine costs over $5.00. I thought that was outrageous. I have been paying that price all along and didn't know it, but Becel is the better margarine for good health. I use coupons when I can. The bread I buy (Wonder Plus) costs about $2.59 I think. It's a bit much. I know I could buy cheaper bread but I have found that the store brand bread is smaller, that is the size of the slices are smaller in size. A lot of store brand products just don't cut it when it comes to quality and taste. I would never buy store brand toilet paper. I buy either Charmin or Cashmere in the 8 giant roles or smaller 16 rolls, but I never EVER pay full price. Our pharmacy frequently has this toilet paper on sale for $3.99 whereas you would pay over $9 in the grocery store.

newtondak (1307) | 3 months ago | It is weird how different they can be - a newspaper from my hometown that I read regularly compares prices as the two nearest towns for various grocery items and they differ a lot even though the towns are only 40 miles apart.

3. ZephyrSun (1557) | 3 months ago | We don't have Land O Lakes milk here, the store I shop at has a local name brand and store brand and there is only about 10 cents between the two. The store brand is what I buy and it's usually about 2.99 a gallon. I couldn't imagine paying 4.75 a gallon. I just bought real butter last night because it was cheaper than margarine and it was $2.00 a pound margarine was almost $2.50 a loaf of store brand bread is about $0.79 name brand is almost $3.00. I picked up a 24 pack of Diet Coke that was on sale for $5.99 and normally it is $7.49. Gas just dropped to average $3.77 a gallon.

newtondak (1307) | 3 months ago | Gas locally is $3.99 but 10 cents cheaper about 40 miles away. All of our children are grown and gone from home now, so we don't use as much milk for just the two of us. I'd hate to think about buying milk for a family! It would make you want to go out and buy a cow!

ZephyrSun (1557) | 3 months ago | We buy about 3 gallons a week for a family of 5. We have all cut back on drinking and using milk since the price keeps going up. We use to buy between 5 and 6 gallons a week.
