If you are, don't feel bad, it turns out you share your concern with the foreign
policy expert himself, Senator John McCain who said this on Good Morning America:

"We have a lot of work to do. It’s a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq-Pakistan border."

For those of you who share McCain's questionable knowledge of geography, there is no common border between Iraq and Pakistan.

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/07/21/foreign-policy-expert-mccain-iraq-pakistan-border-extremely-dangerous/

As you can see by the map, if you didn't already know, what's between Iraq and Pakistan is - IRAN!

I've been told that Americans living in USA rarely know much or think about the rest of the world... sad well, maybe this is an exaggeration, but experience tells me there must be a small iota of truth in this.

So I'm not surprised that a Presidential candidate would make such a remark, but I would have expected it from Mr. Bush, who has rather distinguished himself in such manner!

On a more serious note, I wonder what Mr. McCain meant when he mentioned Pakistan... I am inclined to think he wanted to say the Afghan-Pakistan border which, as we all know, is a lawless area, a no-Man's land, where War Lords rule the roost. ninja
It is however, heartening to know that (finally) Americans are beginning to sit up and take note of other parts of the world!doh

Don't forget that Senator Obama visited 57 States.

Come on, you know that was a simple matter of misspeaking. McCain has made way too many of these gaffes to chalk it up to that, he's apparently not as sharp as he could be, certainly not the one I'd like to have his finger on the red button.

Like his comments about Rev. Wright I have known this man for 20 years. He married me, babtized my children and now this is not the man I knew.

don't forget I am a new politician and am out to change the system. I paid the Hospital $1,000,000.00 for my wifes promotion, I gave thousands of dollars to a radical who helped me get elected. I did not use his money but ours. A new Politician.

He will say and do anything to get elected.

The people who cling to their bibles and guns.

If one is a mistake the both can make similar mistakes.

So he got a million dollar earmark for the hospital where his wife works so that means he "bought" her a raise? Hospitals get earmarks everyday, some are even for worthwhile purposes. As an Illinois Senator what was so unusual about that? If we looked into the personal lives of every lawmaker from both parties we'd probably find plenty of similar examples, don't you think? I'm not defending wasteful spending and I agree these earmarks have to be reduced but I don't think it's a fair statement to say Obama paid a million dollars for Michelle's promotion.

I'm trying to find what you were referring to when you wrote, "I gave thousands of dollars to a radical who helped me get elected. I did not use his money but ours." Anyway, this post isn't about Obama and I must respectfully say this response is an example of what I was referring to in a post I started a month or so ago about "apples and oranges".

Everyone misspeaks and I'll go so far as saying these candidates and all their staff members that travel with them have to be totally exhausted much of the time but there are cases of simply mixing your words up or thinking one thing and having something slightly different come out of your mouth but I think there have been enough examples of serious gaffes by McCain to make me more than a little concerned even if I did agree with any of his politics. It blows my mind that not only is nobody worried about it but the media doesn't even report it other than a very brief mention if that.

To your last paragraph I would agree. I think that sometimes the news media heckles them too much by repeating the same question over and over again so that they can show their listers and viewers that they have asked an important question. I remember one News conference that President Bush had and he was asked at least 5 times about a withdrawal from Iraq. That news conference generated a comment from a former White House Reporter that in the past reporters had a list of questions and would check them off as they were asked. To the former reporter todays reporters have only one or two questions and once they were asked they don't have any back up and he felt this is sloppy reporting by the new reporters.

Think maybe it was a Freudian slip?? He couldn't possibly be that uneducated could he? I mean I am not good with geography but I am not running for president of this country either. If we elect McCain we will have two semi educated presidents in a row. What will the world think of us then?

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9221)   ranked 376 out of 6,359 in politics  1 year ago

I'm lousy at geography myself but I'm not running for President either and if I was I'd sure try to bone up a bit! The question is, is he that uneducated like our current President or is he "confused", which if we say that Fox News says we're using age discrimination. So what should we call it? He mixed up Sunni and Shiite three or four times is fewer days not long ago, he made a reference to Czechoslovakia, a country which hasn't exist for over a decade the other day and now this border gaffe and nobody cares! He even either forgot which NFL team's lineup he recited while a POW or maybe the whole story was made up? I know I'll take some heat for saying that ad I know most here don't think it's at all relevant because I posted a discussion on it with very little response, but how can someone tell a story about naming the Green Bay Packers lineup for years, put it in his memoir which was made into a movie but then suddenly, when in Pittsburgh, change his story to make it the Steelers whose players he named? I guess in this instance we can take our pick - total pandering to Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania voters, simple forgetfulness or out and out lying.

Well I don't think that FOX would EVER say something bad about a Republican. One could go out and commit cold blooded murder and they would be like oh, well the man murder didn't work and was a waste to society so he did a great job for us all.

If it was just once you could chalk it up to the fatigue of the campaign trail. But he does this repeatedly, along with the lack of knowledge about Sunni and Shiite, and so you have to wonder what is going on. This kind of confusion could cause a lot of diplomatic problems.

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9221)   ranked 376 out of 6,359 in politics  1 year ago

Thank you!! That's my feeling exactly! He mixed up Sunni and Shiite, he thinks Czechoslovakia still exists, he thinks Iraq and Pakistan are neighbors and he doesn't know or remember which football team he named while being interrogated as a POW. Since very little is ever said by the media of the gaffes we have heard about, can we assume there have been others which haven't been reported at all?

I do wonder if he has concentration or memory problems.

My folks are 87 and 89 and don't make those kinds of mistakes, lol. They sure didn't at that age. I have a very good friend who got four college degrees after she retired! So I don't think of early 70s as old like some folks do.

myLot reputation of 71/100. fiona08 (323)   ranked 329 out of 6,359 in politics  1 year ago

Now, now, girls, you know he is the candidate who's supposed to be the foreign policies expert. His war experience alone should tell us he is just worldly enough to be president. Just because he seems a little memory challenged is no reason to worry. LOL

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9221)   ranked 376 out of 6,359 in politics  1 year ago

I agree that age doesn't necessarily mean you lose your memory and the like, my own mom is 91 and she's as sharp as a tack and my brother is 70 and I find it very hard to imagine he's almost the same age as McCain. However, I do think 72 is a bit too old for a demanding job such as being the President, and I really don't mean that in a nasty way. It requires being "on call" 24/7/365 and non-stop travel, at least it has for Bush who probably hasn't spent two straight nights in the White House since he took office.

It definitely depends on the individual. There are many people with senility, or Alzheimer's at young ages, and then there are people in there 90s who are, as you said, sharp as a tack. But with McCain, sharp as a tack is not an accurate description. Whether or not his age is to blame, I think his memory is going to be a problem.

Granted the guy is running for President and should know his geography, he is not uncommon in the US. A large majority of the population can not point out Iraq or Iran on a map. Nor can they point out Pakistan. This is a common mistake and shouldn't be made a huge deal.

I personally don't think anyone on here could go through the pressures of a campaign and not make mistakes. It just can't happen.

I couldn't agree more on that. I know I couldn't do it and I wouldn't even try.
