Terrible service by HP! |
| |
| My father recently went down to the redemption center to collect the free laptop that was offered by Starhub to recontract the maxonline service. For the benefit of those who are not familiar, Starhub is one of the service provider in Singapore for broadband services. Recently, in a bid to entice more customers and also to retain existing ones, they offer a free laptop in exchange for renewing the broadband service plans for a period of twenty four months. I did the renewal for my father in order to get the laptop. It is the new HP Mini. The cute 8.9" screen running on the VIA chip. As expected, due to this really enticing premium, a lot of people signed up for the broadband services. And with the road shows and the PC show on going, the subscription for the broadband service was overwhelming! Anyways, in order to quell my anxiety of waiting for three weeks since I renewed the contract, he took the day off to go down to the redemption center to collect the laptop so that I can fiddle with it in the evening. As the contract was under his name, he took the effort to go down to collect for me. When he arrived there, there was already a huge crowd waiting to redeem the free gift. No matter, my dad thought, it is just a queue. So he went to the front to collect the queue number. Upon reaching the front of the shop, there was a noticed indicating that there are only one thousand sets for redemption that day. So many furious people were waiting for an explanation for the lack of sets for redemption. The alternative was to surrender the redemption papers and arrange for a set to be delivered to your home one month later!!! To make matter worst, the queue is moving at a really snail pace for both the redemption and the registration for the delivery. Imagine, the place opens at 9 am in the morning. According to my dad, judging from the crowd there, I am sure a lot of people also took the day off to go collect the laptop only to be disappointed. My dad arrived shortly after lunch and they only processed about a couple hundred of those lucky few who could get their laptop that day. After waiting for close to three hours, the queue only moved by an average of 10 per hour. Even for the registration for home delivery, the process is slow! Frustrated, my father gave up as his queue number is another good five hundred more before it will even reach him! That would mean waiting till the store closes, he will still not be able to register for the home delivery. When I found out, I made a call to Starhub to find out what was happening. Then I realized that HP was the one who did not bring in enough laptop sets for redemptions. What is this man... you tie down with Starhub to get the contract to provide the laptop sets. But with the overwhelming subscription to the offer, you only expected 1000 people to turn up and redeem the laptop?!? What were they thinking? I mean, if HP would have informed the public that they only have 1000 sets for redemption, then a lot of people would not have wasted their time and precious leave from work to do down to do the redemption, right? Sigh~~~ what would you have done if you were in my father's position? | | | | | |

| | oh my! that is terrible indeed ahgong! hmmm, i dunno what best could be done in the situation. i had that similar experience with a local cellphone company. i can't really do anything because they told me to wait. what i did was to downgrade the unit, which was availalbe, instead of waiting for the more expensive brand, which was supposed to be for me but wasn't available. gee, i know they can say, he we are giving this out for free, so you have to wait. but then they made a promise and that is really disgusting. i hate it when big companies do that and you can't do anything but to follow them. but they cause so much stress on the people. i wish there is something we could do, but these big companies think they are immovable! sigh... i wish the best for you and that you may be able to get your laptop soon without any more hassle./ good day and God bless you! | | | | | | |

| | If I were in your shoes, I would not have downgraded. I would have demanded for an upgrade instead!! Wasting my time and effort for some promise by the company to deliver, I would expect them to deliver! If not as good as the original, then at the very least, some thing equivalent or better. Nothing less than that. When we buy something, the universal agreement between the company and me is trust. They trust that I will make payments on time. And we trust that they will deliver the service or goods as agreed upon when we sign on the dotted line. How can they offer a lower grade product in replacement for the one that was promised to you? It is a clear case of cheating. No? If that is the case, it is a clear situation where that trust between a customer and the company is breached! I would have made a lot of noise and ensure that I get some sort of compensation for the effort and time wasted to retrieve what is rightfully mine in the first place! No? | | | |

| | I guess I'd still have to wait as frustration will not help accelerate the process either. But I agreed that HP should make known to the customers their limitations at that point in time (out of stock or not in time to manufacture more units) and make necessary arrangements with Starhub. It'd be too late and difficult to explain to customers when HP and Starhub realised that during the redemption. It could be a magnificient promotion platform for both companies, but in this case it left a bad impression on the customers, not forgetting that Starhub's customers are also HP's and vice versa. So I hope they learnt their lessons. | | | | | | |

| | Well, with the overwhelming response to the offer, they should have well prepared for this kind of crowd to turn up for the redemption. The frustrating part of this all is this... The time the offer ended till the day the redemption begins, there is a good month wait in between. So, having to wait for a month for the laptop, when the day of redemption opens, it is only natural that people want their gadgets to play with. How can HP tell us that they only prepared 1000 sets for redemption? And it is not a daily limit. It is a limited stock for the WHOLE redemption period! I mean, if HP had made an announcement they they could not get the sets out in time. And that more sets are only available later in August, I can understand. In fact, I would be more tolerant cos my father would not have wasted a good half a day's leave for a futile attempt to get the laptop. Agree? | | | |

| | This must have been so very frustrating for you. I recently done a similar upgrade here in the UK but was told when I registered for it that there would be a delay on its arrival but to expect within the next three weeks and it would be delivered to home address. Given this information in advance I still went ahead and this is what should have happened in this instance. If I were your father I would ask for it to be sent to address once available but any extra that he is now paying for an item he hasn't yet received to be reimbursed and to only be charged from the arrival date. I really hope it gets resolved soon. Ellie :D | | | | | | |

| | If it would had been me at that queue, I would have screamed at the counter staff to no end! I understand that they will require time to get the sets delivered and all. In fact, from the time I signed up in June, till now, it is a good one month wait. We did not have any problems waiting. In fact, if it was made known to me that they only have 1000 sets to be redeemed this time around, I would have told my dad not to bother. Cos we would definitely not be able to make it. Unless he goes to queue up at 7am, 2 hours ahead of the opening time, then there may be a chance. And he shares the same view as me. The frustrating part is this. HP knows that they only have a certain sets for redemption. Why not make it known to us in the first place? If I had known it was only 1000 sets, and my dad still wants to go and try his luck, it is fine if we did not get it. The problem is when my dad specially took leave to go down for this redemption. Only to find out about the limited stocks on location. That is the frustrating part. Having wasted half a day of leave, traveling time and still not be able to get the laptop is not something he is willing to do. The choice was not given to use. I find the way HP handled this redemption very terrible. If they are not able to meet the kind of demand that they jolly well could have expected, then don't tell the public that the sets are available for redemption. Agree? | | | |

| | well i'll put the blame squarely on starhub. the redemption centre is the one at funan centre? if yes it's ran by starhub. i got the samsung lcd tv from there too. it was a premium for signing up with starhub cable. thankfully i waited until the redemption period was almost over before going down. ;p as for the limited stock of laptops, i believe HP only imported the contracted number of laptops. any additional laptops will be on a as-ordered basic. so it's still starhub who failed to foresee the overwhelming response to the promotion. cheers ;D | | | | | | |

| | I still think it is HP that is at fault. If they do not have enough sets for people to redeem, they should jolly well inform Starhub about it. So that Starhub can send out a notification to us with regards to this. No point promising to deliver only to fall short on the actual day itself. Agree? | | | |

| | yes i agree that HP should inform starhub. as a matter of fact, i believe they already did. if not starhub will start suing HP already. it's a business contract and failure to deliver will win starhub quite a bit of money. given my dealings with starhub, they are just too lazy to inform everyone. i have tried contacting starhub regarding many queries. everytime, different people will tell me different things. three calls will yield three different answers. that is the main reason why i'm not using starhub internet despite the attractive promotions. cheers ;p | | | |

| | ha ha ha ha ha... being a hubber club member has its perks. Due to that, I am sort of cornered already. Now have to put up with this. Other than these little incidents that mar the service record, I must say Starhub is quite good to use. It is a pity that they allow such incidents to happen. I guess once the contract is signed and the money is paid, it is a different ball game already. Sad isn't it? | | | |

| | well i'd say starhub's products are not too bad. it's the service that riles me to no end. this has actually happened before. the same thing for the lcd redemption. also not enough sets for redemption. sigh, it's really too small a market to have many competitors. guess we consumers can only suffer. ;p | | | |

| | Well, even when the incident made the news, there is still no apologetic steps taken on Starhub or HP's part to rectify the situation. http://www.asiaone.com/pr... We all know that the redemptions are staggered. And most of us who are affected are the ones from the first batch of redemption. What I am afraid of is this. We are told to wait for the next redemption period. Then later the date comes, they tell us only got another 1100 sets left. Then what? Sigh... only time will tell. | | | |

| | I can tell you they will not load their service staff with things like that. The customer service girl promised me that HP will call me within the period of 7-14 Aug to make the arrangement. I will patiently wait for it. If I do not get my gift by the end of that period, I will call to cancel my contract! | | | |

| | I would have gotten very upset and left just like he did. It is very hard to find companies that really are concerned about the customers any more. All that is thought about is the mighty dollar or euro or whatever. I agree that when there is a limited supply, like in this case, it should be told to those concerned. I guess i they did that however, they wouldn't make all those sales. I think they probably thought better than to have sold and had someone upset than not to have sold because people would not think they could be one of the first 1000. I am not overly impressed by HP anyway so I probably would not have been in any of those lines. LOL Have a great day. | | | | | | |

| | What could have been a brilliant promotional success turned out to be a big fiasco. I am sorry for everyone involved including Starhub who has to deal with angry subscribers. | | | | | | |

| | Who wouldn't be angry? We all waited more than 3 weeks for the redemption day to arrive. Anticipating the arrival of a new laptop all these while. And the redemption day opens on a week day. Being excited to get a new laptop, a lot of people took the day off to get the device. Only to be disappointed at the counter where HP is telling people that there are limited sets. I am sure if people knew of the limited stock, a lot of them would not have taken the day off to go down and collect. My dad included. Wasted a good half a day of PRECIOUS leave. | | | |

| | If I were in your shoes, I would have banged table and say one of you guys better be the ones responsible. Cos you got a faulty product. And it has to be fixed! I too think both are at fault. But I will still hold HP as the main one responsible fella for the whole fiasco. They are the ones who receives the orders from Starhub. They should jolly well have prepared all the sets ready for redemption. How can they just prepare only 1100 sets? Sigh... read about it in the press. http://www.asiaone.com/pr... | | | |

| | Gosh this reminds me of the samsung bordeaux LCD tv redemption for the home theatre set etc! remember going to bencoolen street or somethign to queue with this morries company? cos Samsung farmed out the redemption? and there were angry people there everyday? my hubby was also offered a free hubstation by starhub. but he didn't want to commit over the phone and the weird salegirl said that this deal can only be accepted via telemarketing. hubby asked for a contract to be sent to him so he could read the fine print before saying yes, but she said she cannot sign. what kind of shady deal is that then? if you can't let me know what i'm agreeing to? so in the end we decided to forgo the hubstation, not that we needed it anyway. and the telemarketeer must have been quite desperate for the commission cos she called twice after that to try to persuade him to extend the contract for 2 more yrs and get the hubstation. he asked her to send contract again and her answer was still no. reading your story I think there might be another case of this if we had accepted! thanks for the heads up. these are the stories that the local papers should be reporting! | | | | | | |

| | They did. It was in the Home section. One small little corner of the paper. I was expecting a big hoo har the next day. But nothing! The New Paper had a full page dedicated to this report. All Starhub could say was sorry and that we must go down to Funan again to register with the HP counter to arrange for a delivery. Sigh... Still waiting for my call from HP. Cos I made noise to Starhub and they promised to inform HP for that arrangement. I guess if I have the time, it is better to go down to funan to make the arrangement. Hmm... or should I wait for the call? Sigh~~~~ | | | |
