Ability. Motivation. Attitude. Do you have what it takes?

Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it. - Lou Holtz I was waiting at the train station the other day when I noticed the announcement screen flashing the above quote. It was a very well put quote. And a very meaningful and truthful one too. Do you agree?

Yeah. It is a nice quote isn't it? Very meaningful in those three sentences. Seem to capture the very essence of what we do or do not. Reminds me of the quote from Yoda. "Hmm... do, or do not. There is no try!"

this is true! i heard of another quote that attitude determines 90% of results. and i try to remind myself of that when my attitude is lousy. which is quite often if I get frustrated at work haha! I think sometimes laziness is my main weakness. cos i know i have the ability but lack the motivation to go the extra mile. or perhaps you can say I am easily content. or maybe I'm just a slacker haha.

I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes we want to do something. Then we have that inertia to move to go out and achieve it. I think the experts call it the comfort zone. We are in a place where we happy where we are and are very reluctant to go out and do more to get what we want. Well, remember the hokkien song? "Ai Pia Jia Eh Yah"? There is a few sentences in the song that, loosely translate, says "30% is fate, 70% is hard work, Must work hard to win (or to achieve our goals in this case)". So true! I will see if I can find the lyrics and translate it. Searching for chinese characters in the web is already a pain. Worse when it come to hokkien characters!

that's a really well put quote. it concisely points out why we do what we do. in fact, motivation is the biggest reasons why anyone does anything at all. ability and attitude merely assist in the process. without motivation, one may not seek the ability to do something. attitude plays a part but only a small one to me. it's amazing what we can do when the motivation is there. i think i should start looking up when i'm waiting for the train too. cheers ;p

Yeah, I totally agree with you. With the right motivation, anything is possible. It is a matter of how we want to be motivated to get what we want. Eversince I joined mylot, I am constantly on the lookout for something to write. Just the other day, I was reading over the shoulder of someone on the train. 8p And there was one heck of an interesting article which I noted on my notepad. I am itching to write about it. Just need to get the writing juices flowing. Then it is onto mylot for another discussion!

Good for you! Not everyone can do what they want and get what they strive for. But with the right attitude and the right motivation, anything is possible! It is a matter of how much we are willing to work for to get it. That is why we must change our mindset to get what we strive to achieve for.
