Nobody here likes to disagree?

OK, my first real post here was: "Is MyLot too polite for its own good", and I've gained a little experience here since then. I'm still making rookie mistakes, actually violated a couple posting rules, but for the most part people are polite in pointing it out to me.
One thing I've noticed: A lot of people on MyLot do not want to disagree. Strong debate issues are very divided, and are filled with people who agree with each other? They rarely cross lines to discuss, so both end up missing out on half the argument. I like debate, and I like disagreeing. If all I did was sit around in a discussion board and pat myself on the back, I wouldn't be getting half of what I'm here for.
Good debate challenges you to think outside your box (or my box, or any box!). Granted, not a lot of what goes on here is "good debate", but posters who provide links in their post so that everyone has access to the information and can discuss it intelligently provide a great forum to learn something new. (Whew, what a sentence!)
So my question then is, how many people are here to learn something new? Does anyone else like the debate/discussion/disagreement? Even at the (unfortunate) expense of your star rating?

Well I like to debate, but I think that it is stupid for a a member to mark you negative because they don't agree with you. I will only mark someone negative if they are verbally attacking someone and most of the time I won't even bother with the discussion when that is happening. If you want the "not polite members" of mylot hop into politics, that's what happened to my star rating, not that it matters to me. But, be careful in politics because sometimes you will not get a strong debate, some are mostly debates with false fallacy.

I definitely agree its stupid to be marked negatively for a disagreement.
I'm pretty sure my own star rating fell though as a result of making a couple mistakes, violating the rules (accidentally, though). And in that case I agree with the negative rate (hesitantly!) because its being given out fairly.
But I see a lot of comments start with "I don't want a negative rating but...", and I don't like to see that. So long as you are opposing an idea and not a person, you should have the comfort to speak. That's why we're here, right?
Thanks for the reply!

I agree with you
Couldn't care less about stars. It depends what kind of debates you're talking about, anyway, I agree with you on your long sentences

Thanks for the reply. And yes, I am a fan of the really long sentences, as you can tell, I like to often just separate with commas; even semicolons, just so that I can keep going and going and going...

I enjoy learning something new, in fact, my profile even states that! It also states that I like discussions because they are a good education. People are afraid of turning conversations sour by disagreeing, and looking like the "forum bully". I had one guy who kept preaching his religious belief. He asked a legitimate question. It was "are spiritual and religious the same thing" and a lot of people stated that they could be intertwined but they are generally not the same thing. Every single thing someone wrote back to him he came back with something similar to "your God is wrong, my God is great...my religion is the only REAL religion", etc. That is what people want to avoid in the discussions. That's called preaching, not discussing.
