After the anaesthetic....

I recently came round after a general anaesthetic to find myself crying for no reason at all. I wasn't in any pain and didnt even feel miserable - just rather silly! A trainee in the recovery room said she had assumed everyone just regained consciousness feeling a bit sleepy but had seen a number of different reactions from screaming, swearing ... and then me. How has anaesthetic affected you as you've woken up?

Don't feel alone Wizzywig! I've been put under twice in my life and both times woke up crying like a baby and had no idea why. I couldn't stop myself and was actually joking around with the nurse but still crying at the same time. She told me that my reaction was not strange or abnormal and not to worry about it. It finally stopped after about 10 minutes and everything was fine. So if I ever have to go under again I'll be sure to tell the doctors and nurses that I will probably wake up crying my eyes out.

They kept asking if I was in pain and, like you, I was joking with them at the same time. The nurse did say that she didnt think the music was THAT bad! Yes, i suppose it took me about 10 minutes to stop. Next time they ask if I've ever had a bad reaction to anaesthetic I'll just tell them to have the tissues handy.
