My step son is getting laid off next week and they do not know for how long. What should he do?? We have told him that he should try and find another job while he is laid off and not just wait for them to call him back ! He is going to be able to get unemployment.

Before getting laid off, he must find another job, because, not having a job will not help him to stand on his own legs and it will spoil his next career prospectus.

I would definitely say that he should look for another job. My cousin's father has been unemployed for a while because of lack of work, and he thought he would be getting a job soon with his company but he hasn't. So definitely try to look for another one! I wish for the best in his search for a job! I hope you have a very wonderfully lovely day.

He should file for unemployment compensation while he is out of work and look for new opportunities. He may be called back but he may not so it's better to have another job, and possibly leave it to return to his old one (or not), than to have no job at all.

It is fine to get unemployment but look for another job. I work in the HR field and I always am impressed when someone comes looking for a job and they have just been laid off instead of saying well my unemployment runs out in a few weeks so I thought I would look for a job. There are no gaurentees that your stepson will get recalled and he may get lucky and find a better job. If he doesn't chances are he will find something that is at least better then unemployment and hopefully with benefits. You don't get those when you are laid off. If the other company calls him back he can alway resign for his new job and go back to his old job.

Depends, is this a labor union job? If so, he may not be able to just go find another job. Personally, if I could afford it, I would just file for unemplyment and wait. If this happens all the time - like a lot of jobs lay off - he should talk to other people and find out the average time of most lay offs

With the ecomony today, you need to be aggressive to find another job. Hopefully he has an emergency fund to be able to pay his basic bills. Does he live with you? If so you probably need to set up some expectatiosn that he isn't sitting around watching tv or playing video games all day long. Have him put his resume on Monster, Careerbuilder, Hot jobs and in the categories that he is looking for. He should let any business contacts know that he is unemployeed and looking for new work.

I think he should try to find another job. Wit the downturn in the economy, he might not get called back soon. Also, he should try to find out whether there is a limit to the amount of time that he is eligible for call back. For example, in my company, if you get laid off, you are eligible for call back for 18 months. After that time, if they decide to hire for your old position again, they do not have to call you back, they can just repost the position and begin the recruitment and hiring process again. If he gets another job, then he will have his choice if the old job calls him back. who know? Maybe he will like the new job better.
