2008 election | | This election year has been a very trying year for me so far. I just graduated with a BA in Political Science and History. I LOVE POLITICS but I feel like this year I'm basically trying to choose between the lesser of the two evils. Each candidate has strong pros and cons. I understand that politics are everyone's personal choice and I don't want to intrude on your privacy by asking which political candidate you will vote for. I would, however, like to know which issues are the most important to you when deciding on a candidate. How big of a factor is patriotism when it comes to deciding on the future president of the united states?

shell1986 (301) | 1 year ago | I guess I would be classified as a stateswoman if that is what they do. I'm pretty open and honest with my opinions. Sometimes people don't necessarily like what I say but I can't please everyone. Plus, I'm an everyday person...infact, I'm a broke college student and I can't afford to run! haha

shell1986 (301) | 1 year ago | I agree completely but unless you have money in this day and age you are never going to be elected as mayor, let alone president of the united states.

| | 2. xfahctor (5192) | 1 year ago | Hey shell, congradulations on your degree and welcome to mylot. Now, forget it exists. Not your acomplshment in getting it, you worked hard for it and deserve a pat on the back for that, but, it's not going to help you decide who to vote for. The issues most important to me this election? I want someone with a back bone. I want someone who doesn't offer a eutopian vision of the country where everyone gets everything handed to them by the government. I want a candidate who will keep government out of my life instead of filling every crack and crevise with it. I want someone who understands what it really means to send men in to battle. I want someone with specific plans, instead of flowery ideology. I dont want my healthcare fooled with too much and I certainly don't want it given to someone who snuck under the fence to be here, I don't want to pay even more taxes than I already do, I don't want to cower when a group threatens us because they don't like our ideals or where we are. I don't want a president who actualy TELLS the enemy when we're leaving. It would be nice if we could sit down and negotiate with some people but the truth is, there are people and indeed nations, who, out of sheer ideology, feel it is there sworn duty to kill us. The world is not a nice place. I don't want someone who cares more about what europe or asia or the U.N. thinks of us than whats actualy best for us. I couldn't honestly give a rats asss what the world thinks of us anymore. I absolutley do not want someone who stands on a foriegn soil and throws his own country under the bus. I don't want someone who feels that the way to cure economic woes is to redistribute wealth and punish those who worked hard to become "those evil rich" by taking it and giving it to someone who feels it is owed to them simply because it's the nice human thing to do. I don't want the vast amount of money we already give to an ungrateful world to be mandated by the government. I want someone who truly understands the principals of the federal republic we live in instead of trying to model another societies failed structure. My advice? LISTEN to the candidates. REALLY REALLY listen. Not just how well they say what they are saying, or how many people are star struck by a candidate, but what does it actualy mean when you strip the layers. Are they actualy putting forth a viable plan? Or just putting forth a beautiful general ideal? There are harsh realities in this world that seem to be increasingly ignored in favor of a world we wish existed, a vision that is in direct conflict with the very human nature and world political and social climate. again, welcome to mylot.:)

shell1986 (301) | 1 year ago | Thank you so much! I appreciate that:-) I agree with pretty much everything you've said...I want some one with all of those qualities as well. But as the American public we also have to keep in mind that in politics there is no such thing as the most perfect candidate. One of the biggest things that is so sad about the whole election process is that right now our economy is horrible and the candidates are out there spending millions upon millions in television ads! Talk about an economical use of the American public's money! And another thing...the IRS is a joke. I feel that we should do away with the agency and have one completely universal sales tax. That way everyone is treated fairly and no one gets to escape paying taxes. But those are just the beginning of my political ideas.

xfahctor (5192) | 1 year ago | Oh, no doubt. We will never find the "pefect" candidate. The limited viable filed of candidates we have is not nessesarily the fault of our government. It's our fault. The voters. There is certainly no shortage of political parties in this country, 70 some odd parties exist yet very few are willing to support them. In this day and age of the internet there is absolutely no excuse for it anymore, money, publicity or other wise.

shell1986 (301) | 1 year ago | I agree, as Americans it is most definitely our fault that we are the ones who nominate and elect Americas 'elite'. We need someone in office who is the epitome of the proletariat community. I think the last President who came to mind that was anywhere close was Jimmy Carter, the Georgia peanut farmer. He didn't even last in office because he was too honest. That is really sad...America was doing pretty good back then and look at us now.

xfahctor (5192) | 1 year ago | ACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CARTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!***runs and hides under bed, shivering and rocking*** I grew up under carter. I remember Gas lines, the sha, Inflation that rivals anything today, REAL recession, unemployment at ungodly levels. Carter's only claim to fame was his work in the peace proccess in the middle east. Lol, yeh, I'm just contrary like that. It was however a good example of a common man turned govener, turned president. Ok how about an actor turned govoner turned president?, lol, probably my favorite president of my lifetime.

shell1986 (301) | 1 year ago | lol Jimmy Carter was a simple man with a great southern charm. The Camp David Accords are what he is most noted for but simplicity definitely suited him. Ronald Reagan was a pretty good president as well so I would have to agree with you on that one.

| | 3. gewcew23 (4073) | 1 year ago | Taxation reform and spending control is my number one issue. I have other but you asked for the most important and I did not want to bore you to death. I want to see the income tax that we currently have done away with and replaced with a national sales tax. Second but equally is spending control, stopping the pork barrel spending that goes on in Washington, and have the Federal budget be managed like a check book. Let me explain each one of these issues. The national sales tax or as it is call by some the Fair Tax, would replace all federal income taxes, including corporate income taxes and capital gains taxes, payroll taxes, including Social Security and Medicare taxes, gift taxes, and estate taxes. All taxes would be generated from the point of sales, like if you bought a new TV. There would not be any taxes on groceries, or medication. One big advantage of the Fair Tax is everyone will contribute to the federal budget, because of the taxes coming from sale and not from wages. Illegals and those that participate in the black market do not pay income taxes, but they do buy products. Also under the fair tax you cannot over pay or under pay on you taxes, so their is no need to worry about filling you taxes every year. Spending control must be taken serious with a never end growing national debt. Debt just as with you or me is caused my spending more money than bringing in. Most will blame the increase on the two wars we a currently fighting, but we spend more in agency spending than we do with the two war. The federal government must start treating the federal budget just like everyone treats their checkbook. The federal government will take in 2.9 trillion dollars this year, but will spend 3.1 trillion dollar, even without the two wars. Even if there was not two wars going on right now the Federal budget has added 300 billion dollars to the national deficit. To your question about patriotism, of course patriotism is very important. How can the President claim to be able to lead his country in this trying time without a belief that America is the last line of defense against the evils of the world. If one is not willing to acknowledge this then I have no use for them as the commander and chief.

| wanblygaleshka (50) | 1 year ago | Hi Shell,
Let me too add my congratulations on your getting your degree, and in welcoming you to MyLot! I, too, must also agree that your degree will not help much in trying to pick for whom to vote this year. You do make a valid point; The big two, i.e. the Demopublican and the Repbulocrats are like trying to decide between the lesser of two evils.
I'm a bit disappointed in my friend gewcew23, you laid out your thoughts on federalism and taxation perfectly, but you didn't bring in the logical conclusion. We need to abandon the two party system that has gotten us into this mess and get back to what the founding fathers ideals for this country were.
The best way to do that is to bring in a 3rd party that holds to their principles. The Libertarian Party. There IS a 3rd choice this yr Shell, vote Libertarian! Bob Barr and Wayne Allen Root are the Libertarian candidates for President and Vice-President. The news media have completely ignored their candidacy and campaigns! Bob Barr is, himself, a former Congressman and chaired congressional committees. He was brought before the national spotlight back in the '90's during the impeachment hearings. He prosecuted the case of the House to the Senate against President Clinton. He is a very intelligent man, well versed in the political climate of Washington. He is "fully trained" and capable of being the commander in chief the moment he would be sworn in. His view is that of the founding fathers, The Government that governs the least, governs the best. Stop wasting our tax dollars on a bloated federal government that does nothing but take care of itself and robs the ppl.
I am hoping that this year is the year that the Libertarian Party finally gets the recognition it deserves. Check it out and let there be a groundswell of support for an alternative to the big two.

shell1986 (301) | 1 year ago | I understand what you are trying to say but we are never going to be able to go to a one party system. America simply has too many diverse ideas to move to that. Republicans and Democrats' beliefs rarely converge on anything. The system we have now makes it fair for everyone to voice their beliefs freely.

| | | 4. sumpter (81) | 1 year ago | How a candidate will work to fix our economy is the greatest issue to me. I believe that any candidate running will be patriotic in some way, but to me that is not a deciding factor in who I will vote for. I am voting on the issues and only that. Thanks!
