The Vietnamese Peasant Who Saved John McCain's Life

We've all heard much about Senator John McCain's hero status as a former POW but here is a story you may not have heard: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-542277/How-war-hero-John-McCain-betrayed-Vietnamese-peasant-saved-life.html Start of excerpt: "In all the tales of wartime courage peppering John McCain's presidential campaign trail, perhaps the most outstanding example of selfless heroism involves not the candidate but a humble Vietnamese peasant. On October 26, 1967, Mai Van On ran from the safety of a bomb shelter at the height of an air raid and swam out into the lake where Lieutenant Commander McCain was drowning, tangled in his parachute cord after ejecting when his Skyhawk bomber was hit by a missile. In an extraordinary act of compassion at a time when Vietnamese citizens were being killed by US aerial bombardments, he pulled a barely conscious McCain to the lake surface and, with the help of a neighbour, dragged him towards the shore." End of excerpt I've said for a long time that despite the fact that I'm not a supporter of Senator McCain based on his policies I could never take away from him the respect he'd earned as a war hero and POW. I've often said one can't possibly imagine what he'd gone through during those five years. However, this article tells a part of the story that I'd never known before and to me honest it troubles me a bit. Here's more from the article linked above: "And when a furious mob at the water's edge began to beat and stab the captured pilot, Mr On drove them back. Nearly three decades later, a Vietnamese government commission confirmed he was indeed the rescuer and, in a 1996 meeting in Hanoi, McCain embraced and thanked Mr On and presented him with a Senate memento. From that brief encounter to his death at the age of 88 two years ago, Mr On never heard from the senator again, and three years after their meeting, McCain published an autobiography that makes no mention of his apparent debt to Mr On." End of excerpt I find it a bit strange that this detail was totally omitted from McCain's autobiography "Faith of My Fathers". After all, this man saved his life! If it hadn't been for him, none of the rest of McCain's story ever would have happened. Here's another small passage that gives me pause: "?Apparently McCain had broken both arms and one leg, and had sunk to the bottom, but they pulled him out of the lake. ?When they got to the bank, a couple of men attacked McCain, breaking his shoulder with a rifle butt and stabbing his leg, before Mr On stopped them." "APPARENTLY MCCAIN HAD BROKEN BOTH ARMS AND ONE LEG." Were we not led to believe that McCain's limbs had been broken by his captors? This may be viewed as a minor detail by some but I don't think the fact that this Vietnamese peasant saved his life is a minor detail nor is the fact that McCain didn't seem willing to as much as acknowledge him. When you put these items together with McCain's convenient switching of the NFL roster he recited while being interrogated from the Green Bay Packers to the Pittsburgh Steelers during a recent trip to Pennsylvania I think it raises some questions. Had any of you been familiar with this story before? Whether it's new news or old news, what do you make of it? Annie

That is so sad. I think if someone saved my life I would be greatful for the rest of mine. I did not know the whole story and I remember some of McCain meeting with this man. There isn't too much that I can say because it is just awful that he didn't show final respects for the man that could have left him sink to the bottom of that lake. Thanks for the link.

I'd say that's a big contradiction - 20 or several hundred - and no mention at all of the man who saved his life, which we know that's true since McCain did acknowledge him however briefly when he gave him that little trinket. I'm sorry, the McCain supporters will jump all over me for this but they already hate me so what have I got to lose, right? It's been said that we "can't question" his character and integrity, but I say why can't we? We can't take away the credit and respect he deserves for having volunteered and served his country and my heart will always break for him and anyone else who went through the pure he11 of being held captive. However, none of that takes away the fact that he's obviously been less than honest on ore than one occasion. It was fine for John Kerry to trashed as he was in 2004 and he also volunteered for the military and went to Vietnam when he could have easily gotten out of it like other men from wealthy families of his generation such as George W. Bush. He wasn't captured and held prisoner for five years but he was still also a war hero, why wasn't that enough to prove his unquestionable character and integrity? Sorry, I'm ranting and going over ancient history. Thanks for those links, they were very informative and nobody can say they were written by "left-wingnuts" or whatever they call us! Annie

You know what, I'm getting so frustrated I feel like banging my head against a brick wall or something! As you can see by the responses - or lack of responses - here, nobody cares that not only didn't McCain offer condolences or respect to the man who saved his life but he didn't even mention it in his memoir, in fact he's changed his stories but that's fine, I guess. McCain has said he didn't wish to use his POW status in his campaign yet he's constantly used it and even when he lied about the alleged incident when he recited the NFL roster, nobody seems to think that's a big deal at all! Obama is being trashed from every direction yet we're the evil ones for saying anything at all about McCain who I'm beginning to honestly believe is a total liar and a fraud! Annie

"left wingnuts" That made me think of those little things that go on screws that don't have a head lmao! I am personally upset with people that attack others for not agreeing with them. I also am very upset that people mark one negatively because they do not agree with them, to me those people should be living in a communist country because here in these United States I can disagree with yours or anyone elses opinions. Ugh! Sorry a little rant. There are some here that are very intelligent and have a low rating because they upset the other party. Taskr whom I never agree with and never mark negative said something today that I agreed with and was very intelligent and he/she (I don't know if Taskr is male or female) has a low rating. I think we and we being citizens of the United States that are allow by law to vote should question the credibility of a person running for office and especially the highest office of this country. I keep seeing how conservative republicans keep referring to democrats as socialists but honestly when they are the ones telling us not to question it reminds me of communist rule. Should we start referring to them as communists? No, I don't believe that I personally would stoop to that level of name calling but, I do fully believe that the Constitution allows us to believe and think as we choose and no one is suppose to tell us how and what to believe. So there Annie we can both take that shyt together!

OK I have to respond again because I found some interesting items while researchiing McCain today. So here are some links that may or may not be of interest to you Annie, I just had to make sure that no one misunderstood what I meant by you. lol Since there are some that seem to have a hard time with some of my posts. Enjoy. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-542277/How-war-hero-John-McCain-betrayed-Vietnamese-peasant-saved-life.html http://mccainkeatingfive.com/?p=1

Thank you very much. Gee, some seem to have a hard time with some of YOUR posts...? Don't feel bad, Hon, I've been recently taken to the woodshed and give forty lashes. I hope the media is forced to start reporting some of this stuff before election day. Really, they can't sit on it forever, can they? Annie

Sometimes it's so irrating when someone picks apart your post and their is an opinion based spew of nothingness. Maybe the press or hopefully someone will release the information right after the conventions. It would probably be a little egg on someone's face huh?

It goes to show you that there are good people found in all parts of the world in all times, in war and in peace. I'm glad MCCain was rescued, I would think if this story was true he would mention this and give this man credit for his heroism. I hope that he does now.

I hope so too. It seems strange that it wasn't mentioned in McCain's autobiography. Wouldn't that seem to be a pretty important part of his story? Annie

I'm glad he was rescued too and as an American I feel we all owe this man a debt of gratitude for rescuing an American soldier. However, there really should be some explanation about this. This isn't some minor omission, this is the very beginning of how McCain came to be taken into captivity. Annie
