The Vietnamese Peasant Who Saved John McCain's Life |
| |
| We've all heard much about Senator John McCain's hero status as a former POW but here is a story you may not have heard: http://www.dailymail.co.u... Start of excerpt: "In all the tales of wartime courage peppering John McCain's presidential campaign trail, perhaps the most outstanding example of selfless heroism involves not the candidate but a humble Vietnamese peasant. On October 26, 1967, Mai Van On ran from the safety of a bomb shelter at the height of an air raid and swam out into the lake where Lieutenant Commander McCain was drowning, tangled in his parachute cord after ejecting when his Skyhawk bomber was hit by a missile. In an extraordinary act of compassion at a time when Vietnamese citizens were being killed by US aerial bombardments, he pulled a barely conscious McCain to the lake surface and, with the help of a neighbour, dragged him towards the shore." End of excerpt I've said for a long time that despite the fact that I'm not a supporter of Senator McCain based on his policies I could never take away from him the respect he'd earned as a war hero and POW. I've often said one can't possibly imagine what he'd gone through during those five years. However, this article tells a part of the story that I'd never known before and to me honest it troubles me a bit. Here's more from the article linked above: "And when a furious mob at the water's edge began to beat and stab the captured pilot, Mr On drove them back. Nearly three decades later, a Vietnamese government commission confirmed he was indeed the rescuer and, in a 1996 meeting in Hanoi, McCain embraced and thanked Mr On and presented him with a Senate memento. From that brief encounter to his death at the age of 88 two years ago, Mr On never heard from the senator again, and three years after their meeting, McCain published an autobiography that makes no mention of his apparent debt to Mr On." End of excerpt I find it a bit strange that this detail was totally omitted from McCain's autobiography "Faith of My Fathers". After all, this man saved his life! If it hadn't been for him, none of the rest of McCain's story ever would have happened. Here's another small passage that gives me pause: "?Apparently McCain had broken both arms and one leg, and had sunk to the bottom, but they pulled him out of the lake. ?When they got to the bank, a couple of men attacked McCain, breaking his shoulder with a rifle butt and stabbing his leg, before Mr On stopped them." "APPARENTLY MCCAIN HAD BROKEN BOTH ARMS AND ONE LEG." Were we not led to believe that McCain's limbs had been broken by his captors? This may be viewed as a minor detail by some but I don't think the fact that this Vietnamese peasant saved his life is a minor detail nor is the fact that McCain didn't seem willing to as much as acknowledge him. When you put these items together with McCain's convenient switching of the NFL roster he recited while being interrogated from the Green Bay Packers to the Pittsburgh Steelers during a recent trip to Pennsylvania I think it raises some questions. Had any of you been familiar with this story before? Whether it's new news or old news, what do you make of it? Annie | | | | | |

| | It goes to show you that there are good people found in all parts of the world in all times, in war and in peace. I'm glad MCCain was rescued, I would think if this story was true he would mention this and give this man credit for his heroism. I hope that he does now. | | | | | | |

| | I hope so too. It seems strange that it wasn't mentioned in McCain's autobiography. Wouldn't that seem to be a pretty important part of his story? Annie | | | |

| | Absolutely, and it seems pretty strange to me that his story has NOT been heard. If McCain were to have introduced his widow at some even it would have been a great PR move but for some reason (?) he doesn't seem to want to bring this incident up at all. Annie | | | |

| | I actually heard this story a long time ago. I was unaware that the man had died. I knew about their meeting back in the 90's but I didn't know that the guy wasn't mentioned in McCain's autobiography or that there had been no communication between them since that meeting. The article you linked to appears to have been written in March, and it's on a rather obscure site, but it seems reputable enough. I'm not overly fond of the title saying McCain betrayed the man. It's not as though McCain in some way harmed or injured him. I just think it's unfortunate that he didn't see fit to include him in his autobiography and send condolences to his family when he passed away. | | | | | | |

| | This is honestly the first I'd heard of this story at all. I'd come across it completely by accident while search for information that McCain had fought to stop the search for our POW/MIA's as had been alleged in another old discussion I'd come across. I'm not sure myself if the title is fitting but I do find it very strange that this account wasn't included in McCain's memoir. After all, this is a big part of his story since this gentleman saved his life not once but twice - first from drowning and then from the others who possibly would have killed him right there on the spot. It's very sad that after this man had been so proud of what he'd done and had been so pleased with the little trinket McCain had given him that McCain couldn't have shown his widow some respect. I understand how many people are very offended at anything that's seen as criticism of McCain's heroic service to our country but this information does make me wonder if everything else we'd been led to believe was true. It seems to me at least to make his swapping of the football teams even more important. I realize some think that was no big deal at all but I can't just shrug it off. How could he actually have forgotten which team's roster he had recited back then; if he had forgotten something that seems to me to have been a major event from his time as a POW that alone would be cause for concern. The other alternative is that he intentionally changed the team from the Packer to the Steelers to pander to Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania voters and I don't find that very comforting either! | | That is so sad. I think if someone saved my life I would be greatful for the rest of mine. I did not know the whole story and I remember some of McCain meeting with this man. There isn't too much that I can say because it is just awful that he didn't show final respects for the man that could have left him sink to the bottom of that lake. Thanks for the link. | | | | | | |

| | I must have been under a rock for a time because somehow I'd never heard this story before, or if I did I'd forgotten it and I can't imagine that. I'm sorry if this offends the McCain fans here but I think this says something about his character. As I said, if it weren't for this man there wouldn't have been anything more to tell of McCain because he'd have been dead, not a POW. Also, wasn't he supposed to have had his arms broken by his captors? I know any hint that it had happened any other way has been met with much anger by the McCain camp so that might explain it. By acknowledging this man having saved his life he may have had to talk about the fact that his arms had already been broken when he was fished out of that lake. Not that that makes any difference but apparently it does to some people. Annie | | | |

| | I only remember the meeting of the two men because my husband at the time was from Arizona and thought/thinks McCain is great. I had never heard of him until that point because politics was something that I wasn't into, and my dad is a strong Democrat. I had never heard the story of him being a POW until then and honestly I haven't even read up on him because he didn't interest me at all, I do however know that his political views has really changed since the last time he ran for president. I am in no way a McMummy fan so you didn't offend me in any way. Here is a link and if you read paragraph seven it will tell how he broke his arm and he makes no mention of Mr. On, but to a woman that "slinted his leg" with bamboo. Interesting huh? http://findarticles.com/p... In that link if you read it he was mobbed by about 20 people. Now, read carefully the next account provided by McCain in a different interview. You will notice something very different. Read paragraph 13 very carefully if it doesn't jump out at you let me know and I will tell you. I read the entire article, I think you will be surprised if you do, from what I have heard of McCain, I must say I am more confused now than before. There seems to be some major contradictions in stories that I have heard. So here's the link to that one and let me know what you take from it. http://www.news.com.au/he... And for all the McCain supporters, I didn't write the stories above I only found them which you could do if you googled him, so don't mark me negative since I was only researching a topic that I was unfamilar with. Thanks for your cooperation. | | | |

| | I'd say that's a big contradiction - 20 or several hundred - and no mention at all of the man who saved his life, which we know that's true since McCain did acknowledge him however briefly when he gave him that little trinket. I'm sorry, the McCain supporters will jump all over me for this but they already hate me so what have I got to lose, right? It's been said that we "can't question" his character and integrity, but I say why can't we? We can't take away the credit and respect he deserves for having volunteered and served his country and my heart will always break for him and anyone else who went through the pure he11 of being held captive. However, none of that takes away the fact that he's obviously been less than honest on ore than one occasion. It was fine for John Kerry to trashed as he was in 2004 and he also volunteered for the military and went to Vietnam when he could have easily gotten out of it like other men from wealthy families of his generation such as George W. Bush. He wasn't captured and held prisoner for five years but he was still also a war hero, why wasn't that enough to prove his unquestionable character and integrity? Sorry, I'm ranting and going over ancient history. Thanks for those links, they were very informative and nobody can say they were written by "left-wingnuts" or whatever they call us! Annie | | | |

| | "left wingnuts" That made me think of those little things that go on screws that don't have a head lmao! I am personally upset with people that attack others for not agreeing with them. I also am very upset that people mark one negatively because they do not agree with them, to me those people should be living in a communist country because here in these United States I can disagree with yours or anyone elses opinions. Ugh! Sorry a little rant. There are some here that are very intelligent and have a low rating because they upset the other party. Taskr whom I never agree with and never mark negative said something today that I agreed with and was very intelligent and he/she (I don't know if Taskr is male or female) has a low rating. I think we and we being citizens of the United States that are allow by law to vote should question the credibility of a person running for office and especially the highest office of this country. I keep seeing how conservative republicans keep referring to democrats as socialists but honestly when they are the ones telling us not to question it reminds me of communist rule. Should we start referring to them as communists? No, I don't believe that I personally would stoop to that level of name calling but, I do fully believe that the Constitution allows us to believe and think as we choose and no one is suppose to tell us how and what to believe. So there Annie we can both take that shyt together! | | | |

| | You know what, I'm getting so frustrated I feel like banging my head against a brick wall or something! As you can see by the responses - or lack of responses - here, nobody cares that not only didn't McCain offer condolences or respect to the man who saved his life but he didn't even mention it in his memoir, in fact he's changed his stories but that's fine, I guess. McCain has said he didn't wish to use his POW status in his campaign yet he's constantly used it and even when he lied about the alleged incident when he recited the NFL roster, nobody seems to think that's a big deal at all! Obama is being trashed from every direction yet we're the evil ones for saying anything at all about McCain who I'm beginning to honestly believe is a total liar and a fraud! Annie | | | |

| | I feel your frustation completely. You know if it was the other way around, Obama lying about everything and frauding the people, he would not have my support. It is so irrating that some people are so stuck on their party that they can't see the truth even when it bites them in the face. Our government/politicans aren't the problem, WE the voters are the problem. We refuse to open our eyes and see people for who and what they really are. We would rather hide behind our party then take a huge step forward and say "Hey, you're a liar and I am not voting for you!". We are not holding the politicans accountable for their actions and it is truly sad. I'm sorry but did you see McCain on your news today? I did. He was up at the nuclear plant in Michigan. He started blaming Obama for the issues going on in the House. How is it Obama's problem?? He said Mr. Obama needs to call the House back from vacation and demand a vote to help all of the people with gas prices (paraphrased). He said if I were president I would call the House back and demand a vote and I would keep calling them until they came back to vote. Well ok here is my question, if he thinks it would be his job as president to call the House back to vote then WHY in the Hell is he saying that it is Mr. Obama's job to call them??? Shouldn't it be the current president's job to call Congress back????? I mean he did say, if I were president. Ok, sorry just too upset by that statement. | | | |

| | I sure did see him at that power plant and heard his silly rant. What's funny about that is the particular power plant he visited has been subject of quite a few emergencies and controversies and was even the basis of a book titled something like "We Almost Lost Detroit". He also offered his wife up as a beauty pageant contestant for biker chicks which involves nudity and something with bananas. That's right - something with bananas in the "talent" portion of the contest. YUUUUUUUCCCKKKK! Anne | | | |

| | Yeah Freme is pretty much in our "back yard" 15 minutes up the freeway would get me there. Another great one which would have been nice to see him at was our other "back yard" plant of Davis Besse, the great one that had a hole in the reactor for years and the company covered it up. Maybe he could have become known as McGlowy. lol What a great guy. | | | |

| | I'm glad he was rescued too and as an American I feel we all owe this man a debt of gratitude for rescuing an American soldier. However, there really should be some explanation about this. This isn't some minor omission, this is the very beginning of how McCain came to be taken into captivity. Annie | | | |
