Would You Lie for the Sake of a Friend At the Risk of Putting Yourself In Danger

I believe almost everyone at one time or another has made a promise to a friend or friends that they would do anything for the sake of a friend or friends complete with "cross my heart and hope to die".I know I have made "all for one and one for all pacts" with my best friends during my high school days but unfortunately we had seen less and less of each other until we had completely lost touch. The recent death of a friend has brought to mind the promises we have made in friendship and it has made start thinking what would I do if ever the situation arose where I am called upon to keep my promises. If it were material assistance or moral support or other things which one can do without a lot of sacrifice I know most of us would go oiut of our way to help a friend But for example, I have to lie on a matter of serious concern at the risk of perjuring myself in order to save a friend would I be able to do it or would I think of the consequences to me. Would you lie for the sake of a friend adn because of a pact made in friendship?

I think there is such a thing as ncessary lies-I know even in the Bible, when Soul wanted to kill King David, his best friend Jonathan lied about the whereabouts of David at the point of risking his own life!-so there are times we must stay as far away from the truth to avoid harm to our loved ones!

Yes that's true. Jonathan told a lie to save his friend but did he put himself in danger because of said lie? Remember, his father was king. Would you tell a necessary lie to save a friend even if you risk being charged with perjury?(not your life, hehe)

It would depend what the lie is for. Would I lie to help a friend cheat on a spouse? no. Would I lie to keep them out of jail if I knew for a fact they were guilty? no. Would I lie to save their life, even if it meant I could get into trouble? probably. But then if my lie would cause harm to someone else I would feel very torn. A real friend wouldn't put you in the position to lie for them though, so hopefully this is all just conjecture :)

I do hope too that it will never come to a point where you will be called upon to lie for a friend as it seems you have not really made up your mind if you could do it. Well, the 'friend' might not be a real friend if he puts you in such a position but the question is do you consider him a real friend and if you do, is real friendship proven by the ability to lie for a friend to save his name, freedom, reputation or life even at some risk to yourself?
