Do I need to have watched Batman Begins to appreciate The Dark Knight?

I want to see The Dark Knight because of all the publicity and people saying how great it is - Heath Ledger's performance sounds and looks fantastic from what I've read and the photos I've seen. I should be able to get to see it in a cinema next week.
Will The Dark Knight make sense on it's own or do you need to have seen Batman Begins first to fully understand the plot (I know Batman Begins is a reinvention/reboot of the francise & I've seen the first three films, bits of the tv series, read some of the comics..)?
My local cinema is only a small independent and doesn't get films til later - so should I try and go and see it (TDK) next week or wait and see if it gets shown here and watch BB first?

I've not seen The Dark Knight yet (I desperately want to, but we'd have to get a sitter). I don't think it's completely necessary to view Batman Begins to appreciate The Dark Knight (my mother saw and has not seen all of the first), but I would recommend trying to watch it if you can - it's a great movie, and the tone is very different from the other four films in the franchise, and you get a lot more backstory on how Bruce Wayne became Batman, which I found very intereting.
Whatever you decide to do, I'm sure you'll enjoy!

I wouldnt say so because I hardly rememberd batman begins when I saw the movie so I didnt know to much of the characters but other then that it was pretty easy to follow not like batman begins had a cliffhanger so its easy to follow and understand whats going on. But I do reccomend seeing batman begins before seeing this one.
