Shot-put star Heidi Krieger was fed steroids by East German coaches
Athlete, who "just felt like a man," had s*x-change surgery in 1997
Now called Andreas, Krieger fears today's athletes don't know the risks
Krieger says his body changed soon after he began taking what coaches said were vitamins.

Do you think it really was the steroids? Or was there a psychological gender issue?

Initially, I am disinclined to believe this. There are not many examples I've seen in the past of a woman changing to a man after taking Steroids. Even if the steroids changed your body to look at feel like a man's body, your own internal gender assignment of "woman" would make you want to go back to the way you were before. Steroids taken externally might have an effect, but that effect should stop once you cease taking them.
From where I stand, it look as if Heidi had a transgender issue and the steroids and body-change were an excuse or a way to rationalize her desire for gender reassignment.
