My friend is working for 16 years now and he is giving himself another 5 years before quitting his job. What he plans is, build apartment units for rent for income when he quits his job and a small commercial building where he could put up an internet cafe. Could this be a good idea? How about you, what are your plans when you retire?

as of now i and my boyfriend put up a small business which is an internet cafe...but still i work as an accountant to a U.S based firm and my boyfriend manages our business..we tend to work so hard for our future and furthermore, at least we could retire early and enjoy the fruit of our hardworkings and to expand our business and assure that the business alone will be enough for our living...too early to think when we are not yet been married...lol...

When I retire I plan to travel to different places that I have never been to before and also go revisit places I have already been to. I would also still like to continue to work, so basically just start my own business, so I can work whenever I want to.

Your friend has good ideas. He will continue to get income as a retiree. I hope she gets what she wants. Well as for me, I've not really thought of what I want after retirement. I have several plans but nothing specific yet. I'm thinking of an internet cafe also or maybe a restaurant or some vans for hire or a building for rent. A lot of plans actually but I still have to work more so that I will have enough savings to push all those plans to reality.

If God willing I will live up to my retirement age, I plan to go on a tour to Europe (smiles). I would like to see where they filmed The Sound of Music, the leaning tower of Pisa, the hanging gardens and many more.
I would like also to visit the Himalayas , agra and Nepal.
Then I'd go skydiving and mountain climbing...lol...if I could still endure the arduous trek with my aged bones.

Hi
Your friend sounds like he has a good idea and is on the right path now to have that happen . Just dream big and dare to live it is what I say ! If he does his research he should be fine .
When the time comes for me to retire I would love to move to a beach and maybe one in Florida in Destin . They have sugar white sand and green blue waters
I finally will get to be that beach bum poet I always wanted to be .

In general, it seems that a persons investments may take various forms.
mentioned was a real asset investment that could be negotiated into an exchange deal or a sale.
Personally, I also see various forms of investment e.g. real asset, cash, business, transferable skills.
It seems real assets can be kept or eventually sold for profit. Cash may be invested into time deposits or other schemes. Businesses can be grown and kept or sold for a profit. My favorite is transferable skills as mentioned in "What Color is Your Parachute."
I try to learn as much as I can so I can work and enjoy working for as long as I can. That seems to be the healthy routine at senior age. I think it was Howard Demings who kept working on a wheel-chair well into his 90's. He was teaching quality systems for free.
I wish I could do something similar - to stay healthy by happily working hard as a volunteer. "I believe volunteers are always very tired but they are also very happy."
Please share your comments. Cheers :)

You mean sir, you want to work until you can? You don't have plans of retiring at 55 or 60? Well, good luck sir. I hope you could stay healthy and work happily. I'll try to read the discussion "What color....". I'll get back to you soon sir. Good evening.

Your friend has a smart idea - invest in real estate so so that he can enjoy the returns even when he is retired and doing whatever he wants.
Me, I have such wild dreams about retirement. Retire early, tour Europe, move to New Zealand, have my own business, etc. No specific plans at present. But I am looking around, weighing possibilities :-)
