Do you think music today sucks!!  

this generation music are more on shouting and the instruments are too cloud than the lyrics.

seriously, i am not much into country but i am in the same boat as you are because i LOVE big band music...i was born too late in my opinion lol! i also love early jazz and early 20th century history. i think screamo and heavy metal and rap leaves A LOT to be desired!

Yea, pretty much anything after the 70's is few and far between. Although I MISS Stevie Ray Vaughn!!!! Some of the newer stuff is ok. Much of it doesn't even rhyme, what's up with that? I am pretty eclectic but some of this new stuff is just......lacking...that's a nice way to put it.

I don't think there's a problem with music today.


as with all eras in music, there's a mix of good music and awful music.


people look back with rose tinted glasses, without thinking, you remember the music you like, whearas bad music is more forgettable.

so looking back it seems like music was generally better, when that's not really the case.

Well, I'm 48, been seriously listening to music since a very young age (I had a collection of 50 albums by the time I was 14) and I think that basically it's no different than it has always been. There has always been plenty of inferior music out there; you just have to dig a little deeper, maybe explore some new genres. There are still some very powerful storytellers around.

Many years ago, I sang with a big band and I also sang with opera companies. What can I say?

There are many of us 'older folks' in the same boat. We like the songs and the music we grew up listening to. When I was in grade school I used to love Janet Mc Donnald and Nelson Eddie and the big band music. That was some of the things my parents listened to. My Dad was a country guitar player and singer and I sang and eventually played guitar with him. We listened to all the country greats and personally knew a few. I still have a band (I'm 62) and we perform a lot of the old country and we are very popular where folks that are say 40 and up go but we can't get booked in the younger bars because we are "To Country". The new music has a complexity that requires a lot more musicians than it did in our day. Like you, some of it just doesn't hit my ears or nerves right and I don't like it but there is good music out there.

I wouldn't say it sucks. You just need to have a certain ear to listen to majority of today's music. Most of it sounds really generic these days. And the songs get kind of old really quickly. You are right thought, a good song is far in between. I stick to a lot of older stuff from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Even the 90s had better music than what's around today.

I'm right up there with you... I mean, everywhere you look, there's "the jonas brothers" and "miley cyrus"... teen pop music only meant to earn money...
My taste in music goes back to the 60's, 70's and part of the 80's when music had a meaning... the 90's werent that bad either...
