We Almost Lost Our Baby |
| |
| As some of you already know, our beloved kitty Anna Belle was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism back in mid July. We started her on a daily regimen of medication for this, as prescribed. All seemed to be going well, until the week of July 28th. My daughter in law was visiting for the day, and I mentioned to her that I hadn't seen Anna Belle roaming around the house as usual that day. We checked up on her, and found her laying beneath the rocking chair in my bedroom. She didn't seem to be herself. However, by the end of the day, she was downstairs and eating normally. We gave her the thyroid meds for the next couple of evenings, and I found that she'd vomited each morning after this. I decided to discontinue the medication the next day, as the bottle warned to watch out for a possible toxic reaction. I phoned the vet the following morning, and she agreed with my decision. We were heading into our holiday weekend here, and as per the vet's instructions, I was to withhold the meds for the next four days, and call her back on the Tuesday morning. Saturday August 2nd started out as a normal day, with my daughter and I both home. We were both downstairs, when we heard our kitty vomit in the upstairs hall. I didn't think too much of this, as she's always had a very sensitive tummy. A short while later, she vomited again, and again, and again. I counted a total of around fifteen times. The last time, she threw up some blood. I knew something had to be done. Since it was the holiday weekend, our regular vet wasn't in. I managed to locate an Emergency Animal Hospital, phoned them, and they said to bring her right in. I enlisted my friend and fellow pet lover, to help me. I had no idea 'our girl' was so sick, as the whole thing escalated really fast. She was in bad shape when we got her there. If I hadn't realized what was happening, we would've lost her that weekend. They had to admit her, as she was severely dehydrated from all of the vomiting. She also needed a series of tests. She was there overnight for two nights, and was administered a variety of medications through IV. We brought her home on the Monday morning, although she wasn't eating or drinking (yet). The bill was extremely high, but thankfully a member of our family helped out with this. We'll be paying her back over time. Fast forward to today, and she's still on a diet of special cat food, and won't take enough water on her own to keep her hydrated. She'll only lap up a very small amount, so we're giving her water with a syringe. She really hates having the water squirted into her mouth. We're also almost finished a two week prescription of antibiotics. The diagnosis has nothing to do with her thyroid condition. The tests show she had a severe case of pancreatitus. This sometimes happens with older cats. She'll be twelve in December, and we've had her since my daughter was six. She's a very important member of our family, and we love her so much. I hope and pray that she'll make a full recovery, and we'll have her with us for a long time to come. We've been told the condition could reoccur, and if so, we'd have to take a serious look at her quality of life, etc. This is the first I've been 'able' to talk about it here, as it's been an extremely upsetting time. Do/did you have a pet that's an important member of your family? Has your pet ever been seriously ill? Did it cause you to realize (even more) just how special they are? | | | | | |

| | I am hoping and praying she recovers as well. I had a cat, Spooky, that was about 12 years old when we bought the house 5 years ago. She was a loving cat that we got free from a fellow employee at that time. She needed a good home and I took 2 cats that day. Anyhow about 4 months after buying the house Spooky one day walked almost in circles with her head hung to the side. She also did not use the litter box, nor did she eat or drink anything. Anyhow turns out she was in the midst of kidney and liver failure due to old age etc. Shortened now, I had to put her to sleep. I held her in my arms as she was put out of her misery finally. She glanced up at me with sad teary eyes one last time as if to say goodbye then her head dropped and she was no longer in pain. As I held her I cried a river as she was MY cat and loved dearly. Someday I want to get another cat but the memory is so sad to this day. Thanks. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~ | | | | | | |

| | Hi GRANDPA BOB...what happened to your Spooky reminds me a bit of my Tommy. I've had pets all my life since I was five years old...so I've had many a death in the family from my "babies"I have no idea what happened to Tommy, and he wasn't an old cat. He and another cat, Mickey were buddies, like brothers. One night, very late around 3 in the morning I was still awake lying in bed reading when all of a sudden I hear this "coughing" sound...like the way a cat sounds coughing up a furball. At first I paid no attention but then got up from bed walked over to where the sound was coming from which was right near the entrance door. It was Tommy gasping and having some kind of seizures...maybe a cat's version of respiratory or cardiac arrest????? Never will know..and the thing is he was fine that day, playing around, chasing Mickey his pal. It would have done no good to have brought him to a vet...it happened so quick and since the ONLY 24 hours vet place is in Manhattan (at that time anyway) it would have taken to long to take him there as we're a distance away. I felt completely helpless not knowing what to do for him...I kept saying his name out loud over and over again to let him know I was at least nearby for him and I gently pulled him on my lap...it was all over in about fifteen minutes. Months and months later Mickey died...there was nothing wrong with him either...at least not physically/medically...but I just know he died as he had pined away for his friend Tommy | | | |

| | Oh my pye, you've reduced me to tears too. I'm so sad to hear about your Tommy and Mickey. When you're an animal lover, it's almost impossible (for me, it's not possible), to read or hear about such experiences, and not be moved. Hugs. | | | |

| | I know just how you feel. My Rainbow Angel Divot had pancreatitis and spent time at the emergency vet. He did get better from that, but went to the Bridge 2 years later from what we think was cancer. Those ER vets are miracle workers. I love our 4 cats dearly, but he was special. I miss him every day. There is nothing like a cat purring in your lap to make a day turn wonderful. Prayers for your sweet girl. I hope you have many more happy years with her. | | | | | | |

| | I'm so sorry to hear about your 'baby.' I'd never even thought of pets getting pancreatitis, but know it's a horrible thing that humans can get. You're right about the ER vets, as they are amazing. We dealt with several of them over the two day period, and each one was just as nice, and caring, as the next. In fact, some 'people doctors' could take a lesson from them. Sad really, as this shouldn't be the case. Thanks for your prayers and support. Take care. | | | |

| | Oh, my goodness someonesmom, you really have been through an ordeal with Anna Belle. How horrible to think that the medication for her thyroid condition might have triggered a lot of her problems but it was good you had the instinct to stop giving them to her. Yes, our furbabies ARE our babies. Goodness I'm a regular mother hen with my babies and have been past and present. I can tell you one story of one of my former kittiies. We used to have this delivery boy come and deliver groceries...this was many years ago. He got a kick that our newest kitty, an orange tabby we named Bobbie as his name was Robert. Well one day, Robert comes over and he always like to give a few pets to Bobbie and he said, "Look at his eyes" So I go over and it was the first time I noticed that Bobbie had that third eyelid type thing which usually indicates a very high fever....I don't need to tell you how quick cats can get sick, do I? So my mother took Bobbie to our vet...he wasn't very hopeful as it appeared Bobbie was THAT sick..he even suggested to my mother to put him down. She refused. So the vet did the best he could..rehydrated Bobbie and gave antibiotics, but he warned not to be hopeful. Well I did a real vigilant nursing of Bobbie...by this time he wasn't eating so I had to force feed him..I gave him the antibiotics and even gave him periodic steambaths...it was some kind of respiratory infection. He thrived. and when my mother took him back to the vet, he couldn't believe Bobbie actually pulled through. Not only that but Bobbie lived another 15 years after that incident. One story wasn't so pleasant though. This was another cat I used have, Boomer. Same thing, he got sick real quick. At the time I happened to have vet strength antibiotics and started giving them to him...again it was some kind of respiratory infection. But then something weird happened...he would start to have mild seizures. For the life of me I couldn't figure this one out...but stopped giving him the antibiotics and he seemed better, but my mother took him to the vet anyway. Well the vet confirmed it was a respiratory problem/infection and gave him antibiotics at the office. He seemed fine...but then he started having the seizures the moment he was home...and no, he didn't make it. It took me awhile to realize and make the connection that it was the medicine that triggered off the seizures. I hope and am sending prayers to little Anna Belle that she makes a full recovery. By the way there is this great natural pet website that has remedies for all kinds of problems..including thyroid ones...Click the link of remedies under the Cat photo...then click the area that says "32 more health conditions" Let's us know how she's doing. | | Hi pye, I just had to jump in here, and answer this. It's wonderful that your 'Bobbie' recovered, and went on to live another 15 years. Sorry though, to hear about Boomer. If you read Grandpa Bob's response here, he's given a very graphic description of what it was like to say goodbye to his beloved kitty. I can't read it without crying, and am so worried that this will be the case with our 'beautiful girl.' We so want her with us for a few more years, at least. She hates drinking from the syringe, and my daughter is persistent at chasing her down with it. It's funny, but she switches her tail at us, while purring at the same time. I can see what you're saying, about the possibility of her thyroid condition and meds triggering off the pancreatitis. All of the vets involved, including our own, have said that one has nothing to do with the other, but it still makes me wonder. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers, and I'll let you know how she's doing. Hugs to you too. | | | |

| | I love that word "furbabies". That says it all! If I may borrow that word from you so now I can call mine that. My daughters get upset when I say that the furbabies are my kids. I think the girls get a bit jealous that the cat and dogs are welcome to sleep in my room...but they aren't. LOL | | | |

| | Thanks for the update on this yesterday Mom! At least she is eating something and drinking some on her own now...I do hope she continues to get better and better! My Mom had a cat at one time who she named Smokey.... She ended up with Crystals in her urine and her care was going to be more than my parents could afford so we had to have her put down.... I am glad that you were able to give Annabelle a second chance at life!:) Enjoy her while you can and I wish you all the best in this! Love and Hugs ~Heavens~ | | | | | | |

| | Oh boy does your story bring on flashbacks! This cat that my husband had when I first met him has that. With her she did the same thing that your sweet kitty did, the vomitting, not eating, no poop and just so lethargic. She spent several days in the hospital. They sent her home after 3 days with the thought that she may recover better at home. We came close to loosing her as well. The one thing that our vet thought...it may have been food induced. So we stopped the food that we had been feeding which was a pretty big brand name. After about a week she was back to normal. She is on no medication to control it. But the main thing is she is still with us. Old as the the hills but alive and well. That was a scary time for us. We still watch over her like a baby...even though she is now 16 years old. But she doesn't seem to mind the extra attention provided. Good luck with your little one. Hang in there and be strong for her even though you want to climb into a corner and cry. In the meantime you are in my thoughts and prayers that all will turn out well. | | | | | | |

| | I had no idea that cats could get pancreatitis. I just never even thought about it, although I know it's a very serious thing with humans. A lady that we know, runs a 'cat hotel' where she cares for people's cats, while they're away. She told me that she herself had pancreatitis last winter, and she lost 50 pounds. She was also in hospital on IV, and thought she wasn't going to make it. She said she can totally relate to how these kitties feel, when they come down with this. That's very interesting about the food. Anna Belle has eaten the same food for years, and has never had a problem. We didn't even feed her soft food at all, because of her sensitive tummy. She also never goes outdoors. The only different thing was her 'thyroid meds,' but the vet doesn't think this has anything to do with it. I'm glad to hear that your baby is still with you. That's a really good age. Thanks for your prayers and support. I'm trying my best to be strong, but many days I just look at her and tear up. It seems like we've been fighting this for a lot longer than we actually have. She has about three more days left of her antibiotics. Take care. | | | |
