For years I lived in Germany and somedays I miss it more than I can stand. I was wondering if any of you are missing places you use to live? I loved the old cities and villages especially during the holidays when everything is white and clean. I really miss going junking. I miss the festivals; Munich is alive with celebration in October. I miss the Alps too, they are so beautiful. the worst thing about live in the states again is that I've almost lost all my german. As poorly as I spoke it, I think I miss speaking german more than anything.

Lol, I miss Germany, too. I was born there. Fortunately there are some Germans here in town and I get to visit every so often;)

Und man muss nicht unbedingt in Deutschland sein um Deutsch zu reden. Es gibt viele Deutsche Clubs here in den USA;)

Gothicana, entschuldigung! I am sorry it took me so long to reply. Thanks for your offer to help me re-learn Deutsch. I am very rusty and have forgotten much of the language. I have been away for 16 years now.

Vielen Dank!

I understand completely what you are speaking of! I miss it terribly as well! I LOVED the holiday times and heading into town for all the various activities there. And I always felt so safe no matter what time of day! I also loved the traveling over there. We went to so many countries and did things that other people only dream of. I cried when we had to leave and my heart still aches to go back there. It was such a wonderful time in my life and I will never forget the wonderful things Germany offered us. Hoping to go back there one day!!

rolleyes I am sorry for the long delay in responding but I have been in the middle of a big move. Germany is most beautiful during the holidays with its white lights all aglow against rolling white backdrops of glistening snow. The parties and festivals liven up each village like a carnival. It is a time when neighbors greet and meet one another with warm regards. I do so miss it! I am planning on returning, even if only once, to revisit the land of dreams and fairy-tales; Germany is truly hauntingly charming. Hope you return someday too.

I left Germany when I was 4, and I'm now a grandmother. I still remember the smells and tastes, of my Oma grinding coffee beans in this little wooden grinder, of the smell of red cabbage and pork cooking, of the taste of strawberry icecream. Oh boy!!!

It is just something you cannot forget! My mother moved to Germany in her mid-sixties and fell in love with the country. She was there for about ten months, having to return home due to my older sister's illness, but she never lost the desire and wish to return. Brochen was her favorite food, we lived across the strasser von dir backeri and she visited it everyday like a true native. She and my landland's mother(Oma)loved to talk shop about gardening. Yes, I will always remember fondly the wonder sounds and smells of Germany; but boy is my German rusty! LOL lol

My mother married an Army sergeant when I was nine. We lived in Augsburg for one year, Munich for two; went back to the states for about a year, and then spent three years in the Frankfurt area, leaving about 1974. I got up to about intermediate conversation level, but now I can only count and point out the prepositions.

My favorite memory is enhanced by the story my mother tells. We went to the Oktoberfest in Munich during the time we were there, (I would have been 10 or 11) and she says they were struggling with the two liter mugs (about a half gallon) - I asked to taste it and they agreed. While they were trying to hold it by the handle, I slipped my hand through the handle and held it with the handle between my thumb and index finger. One person at the table pointed and laughed - I was showing my parents how to drink beer.

Two of the six summers we traveled around Europe, including Switzerland, Austria, and Lichtenstein the first term; Holland, Belgium, France, and Luxembourg the second. I am very glad I was able to experience all this before becoming an adult.

And during the first visit, the USSR decided to pay a little visit to Czechoslovakia. I didn't know the full implications then, but now I'm glad I was just a kid and didn't experience the paranoia then.

So, what is Germany like now, not being East and West anymore?

myLot reputation of 90/100. roberten (1397)   ranked 1 out of 11 in germany  1 year ago

It is wonderful to be a "kinder" growing up in Europe! My children loved it there; my youngest was born in Bremerhaven. I was stationed in Germany when the wall came down and it feels a bit more like the U.S. now with the youth embrassing more untraditional values; but Germany will always remain a beautiful country like no other. Both sides coming together just made the country more interesting and favorful; there are always new and exciting stories to be told or heard. I personally think the unification added to the charm of the country, and found it better because of it. You should book a tour, you would be pleasantly surprised at its new world charm and olde world spendlor.

The picture you drew of Germany was enthralling and it did remind me of my native place Lucknow.
Lucknow is the beautiful capital city of Uttar pradesh an Indian state .
it is famous for its nawabs- the elite rulers of the past and the vibrant culture which is still found in the city..
you can feel the warmth in city people as soon as you reach it... the attraction, love, and the beauty you just cannot escape it

Germany is a magical place that is full of wonder trimmed in absolute splendor! The Linderoff Castle is one of my favorite sites but your Lucknow sounds interesting too. I have always wanted to visit India and it is on my list of places to see in the near future. I will keep Lucknow in mind and think of you when I'm there.

Germany is incredibly beautiful. I have been there a few times long enough to visit people and see the countryside and the beautiful landscapes, tour and eat the food. I Come from the Nehterlands originally and have times when I miss it also terribly. I really need to go back regly and walk the place I lived and so on. I need to be among my 'other people' and here my old mother tongue.

Going back is not the same though and I learned that quite some time ago. It helps to go back so plan on it.

See your old country and enjoy it and take lots of pictures and make lots more memories and come back to the land where you live and how it is.

But yes, keep the memories. I need to go back too.. A week should do it and I will walk a lot and tears will flow or be choked away in some instances and more smiles will light my face and then I will make sure to hug my family and off I go again.. HOME where I belong and need to be, with my wife and dog and my job and my friends and my NOW life.

myLot reputation of 90/100. roberten (1397)   ranked 1 out of 11 in germany  1 year ago

You are so right, Germany is extremely beautiful, Alps included. I see changes in her each time I visit and am amazed at her ability to maintain its olde world charm. New technology has made the world a smaller place and more alike than different, so I marvel at those who are able to hold tight to traditions which take us back to a time when life was far simpler. I too always return to my "NOW life" I enjoy; but, for just a few brief moments, I find that life wherever I happen to be. I do not fool myself into thinking I can savor the pleasure of time gone by forever, but I do enjoy it while I'm there. Holding the memories to revisit again and again enable me to escape back to a time when merely looking upon a dramatic landscape took my breath away in total splendor! It is worth going back if only for a day or two to collect as many memories as possible so I can revisit over and over again the experiences of unadulterated beauty life has blessed me with.

Germany is part of the sum total of the places I've experienced in my lifetime and having been there will always remain important to me. I am happy to know that it hold fond memories for others as well. Thanks for giving me a taste of what your experience was like, it was truly interesting.

Wow, you should not forget to speak German. Aren't there any German club or group where you can join and meet with fellow Germans? I miss the city/island where I spent the first 20 yrs of my life. Although lack of opportunity made me move to another place, I miss the laid back life there. Lesser traffic, lesser pollution, life is like a slow motion. Hope I can make it for our next year's 25th high school reunion.

myLot reputation of 90/100. roberten (1397)   ranked 1 out of 11 in germany  1 year ago

Use it or loose it, sorry to say. I have lived in this city for seven years and have met four people from German and they are all members of the same family. They all speak english as their first language and rarely even speak german between themselves. My life is slowing down a bit with my last child graduating from high school this school year, so I plan to do a bit of self-study and revisit places like france, germany, and korea to re-sharpen my linguistic skills.

It is hard to imagine that I once lived among the nationals in germany and korea, speaking the language on a daily basis and now I can bearly recall ten words. My french is used few and far in between but I have nearly total recall under stress, it's so weird. I can scarely believe that I once spoke french, korean and german well enough to live or get along on my own in each country; it seems like a lifetime ago. When I pick them up again, I hope to speak them all to my grave.

Hi Roberten,I can sympathize with you about your feelings for Germany. I lived in Mannheim and Schweinfurt for 12 years while I was in the Army. I too miss the simplistic lifestyle and most of all, the great food, beer, wine, travels and fests. I married the love love of my life there in 1989 and now we have been together for 20 years. The best thing that I have from Germany is my wife, two daughters and all of the great family that still live there. I speak Germany as well and I am determined NOT to loose it, because I cherish it very much. I am fortunate; however, because although I now live in Florida, my spouse and I still speak German quite frequently, like everyday.

I will be writing a discussion topic here soon, so please feel free to jump in whenever I publish it.

myLot reputation of 90/100. roberten (1397)   ranked 1 out of 11 in germany  2 months ago

Small world, the army took me there too. My late husband was 2nd generation german-american but never actually visited Germany. My youngest daughter was born there. The food is terrific and the scenery is even better. I do not speak deutsch much anymore but I have fond memories to cling to.

I am originally from Florida and have considered moving back since I'm from a military town and can be serviced as a retiree; maybe one day your family and mine shall meet and we can attempt converse.

I shall look forward to your upcoming discussion.
