Should she have won the Gold?  email this discussion to a friend?

Did you watch the woman's uneven bars event in the Olympics? Do you think Nastia Liukin should have won the Gold metal? She tied with China's Kexin He with a score of 16.725 but certain rules placed Kexin He in 1st place above Liukin. Personally, I believe Nastia did a better job and was "more perfect" in her routine. What do you think?

Hi Tamara - yes, I really think that Nastia should have won the gold metal. I believe that she definitely did a better job overall. Maybe the news channels will show a repeat of part of their performances so you can see it too.

I have not seen it. but if it was the case, why both were not deckared winner? i do not understand why one should get preference?

myLot reputation of 99/100. koalatbs (702)   ranked 11 out of 136 in olympics  4 years ago

Hi subha12 - From what the news channels were reporting, there are specific rules in place that determine what should be done in a tied score and from those rules it came that the other athlete was the winner overall.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 26 out of 136 in olympics  4 years ago

The tie breaker rule that caused her not to get Gold was a slight decution in her difficulty rating as she did not fullfill the full difficulty that she had supposedly done.

It's hard to say. As I am not a professional judge. I am just an audience who watched it from TV. So it is different than watching it there. I think we shouldn't pay attention whether the athlete won a gold medal or not. Silver and bronze medal is also important and it's also a great honor. In the competition, as long as you try your best to perform, you are already a champion.

I agree with you.

myLot reputation of 99/100. koalatbs (702)   ranked 11 out of 136 in olympics  4 years ago

I agree too youless... they are all winners and champions in my book. I am sure the judges have certain criteria that they base their final decisions on, even when it is a supposed tie. Sometimes it just seems unfair to those of us watching on TV, like you said. Silver and bronze medals are wonderful too. Even just making it onto the olympic team is a great honor for anyone from any country in the world. They are all amazing!

No, i don't think so .Nastia is great, but chinese player has done well.
As to why the Gold metal was given to Miss KeJing , speaking fairs ,is the
quality of the reason of the action.
May it be ,europe and U.S athletes are charming, but qulity is all.

myLot reputation of 99/100. koalatbs (702)   ranked 11 out of 136 in olympics  4 years ago

I think Nastia's performance looked much better and it was definitely of the highest quality but I guess we are not the judges and cannot make that determination, unfortunately.

Hi Koaltabs, Yes I do believe she should have done and I think the judges are actualyy being very biased in all these types of events as it is amazing how these litle children, no way are they as old as they say, are winning so many medals. I also think that the British girl done an excellent job and performed perfectly very complicated moves just dismount was a bit late which ok penalise but they didn't penalise the Chinese girl for it dod they eh. At least with reaces we can see who goes accross the line first and see who really wins. In one of the events recently one judge marked every UK person really low no matter how good they were. Ellie :D

myLot reputation of 99/100. koalatbs (702)   ranked 11 out of 136 in olympics  4 years ago

I agree with you too ellie333 - I believe some of the judges were biased, like you said. I also agree that some of the athletes did not look as old as they say they were, but I guess we will probably never know the truth. You are right about races being much easier to determine who wins because it only matters who crosses the finish line first basically. Gymnastics is definitely a much more difficult and complicated event to score.

I miss the days of old when one could score a "Perfect 10".
This new scoring with it's tie breaker rules has got to go.
This is a situation where they should have both recieved the gold.
But so be the heads and their choices along this line.
She was a lot better looking. But the deduction in her difficulty is what the tie breAKER WAS THAT COST HER THE GOLD.

It is amazing how much more difficult the gymnastics of today's olympians are than years ago too. Triple this and double that... I can't believe some of the things they do on the floor, beam, uneven bars, etc. They are all amazing.

I think the rules are the rules, and while I understand the "upsetness" of people that thought one was better than the other, the judges used a system they have used before, and the contestants agree to that when they compete...hopefully she can come back in four years and try again...

myLot reputation of 99/100. koalatbs (702)   ranked 11 out of 136 in olympics  4 years ago

Very true Tallymommy - it is hard not to get upset but you are right about rules being rules and the judges use a certain system that they have in place just for cases like this (ties). Unfortunately, for us watching on TV it just doesn't seem fair sometimes.

I think Nastia was actually a little better too. What I would have liked to see was for both of them to get a gold medal. I know they don't do that anymore in the Olympics but I think that is the fairest way in a tie.

myLot reputation of 99/100. koalatbs (702)   ranked 11 out of 136 in olympics  4 years ago

Yes lucy02 - It would have been nice to see them both receive a Gold metal.

I think the other Chinese girl, the one who got bronze should have won. She did better than Nastia and Kexin He, in my opinion. Did she have a lower start value or something as the reason she didn't win because I thought she had a better landing and better form on the bars. If her start value was the same as the other two, why didn't she win?

myLot reputation of 96/100. dawnald (24270)   ranked 2 out of 136 in olympics  4 years ago

Yep it was a lower start value.

myLot reputation of 99/100. koalatbs (702)   ranked 11 out of 136 in olympics  4 years ago

I guess the start value was lower. It is hard for people watching on TV to understand, even myself, because we see how amazingly these girls perform no matter what the difficulty and sometimes that can make it seem to us that somebody else should have won. The judges look for specific things that we do not see as we are not trained professionals of the sport. But, either way, sometimes it doesn't seem fair.

I thought both routines were great. They should either award two gold medals or they should find a better way to break the tie (like their scores in the qualifying round or something). The they did it (first drop the high and low score, if they're still tied drop the low scores, keep dropping until it isn't a tie any more) is asinine.

myLot reputation of 99/100. koalatbs (702)   ranked 11 out of 136 in olympics  4 years ago

I agree Dawn - I think they need a better system for determining the winner, especially in a tie.
